The town I grew up in, IMO, was a slice of heaven on earth. I would visit my Muslim friends to have the fantastic Eid feast laid out by their parents. Similarly, they'd visit me for Diwali and we'd have a blast. The Hindus would often visit the Gurudwars and the Sikhs would visit the Hindu temple. The Janmasthmi langar had both Hindus(mostly Punjabi Hindus) and Sikhs in attendance. Same for the Gurudwara langars. The 1984 riots changed things and it was sad. The Sikhs stopped coming to the temples and the hindus stopped going to Gurudwaras. It was heartbreaking. Still remember how sad we kids used to be. An example of how these darned politicians use religion to divide ppl. Diwali was always a community festival. Hindus/Muslims/Sikhs/Christians would celebrate it together. Religion was not hardcore as it is today. Life in the big city was different and I hated it.
Even now, I always put up a Xmas tree and put gifts under it. Does that make me less of a Hindu? Nope. I know Sikhism is considered a diffrent religion but I do not see it as something entirely diff from Hinduism. I can walk into a Gurudwara anytime and feel just like I would feel in a temple. Same with Buddhism and Jainism. Is it just me? Dunno. And yeah...I went to a Catholic school. Some of the Nuns who taught us...will remember them till I die. Thank them for teaching me so many things.
Did I blabber on and on?? 😕 Sorry. It's just that what's happening in this world today, in the name of religion, is just sooo wrong...saddens and angers me no end. Religion should unite, not divide.
Edit: My longest post ever on Bolly forum. And who knew it would be abt 'religion'? Darn!! 😆

I agree, and abroad I am welcomed in all. I too like sharing in others celebrations. I have buddies in all religions. in my parivaar we do believe in Hinduism the way it's practiced in the North, so Hinduism may have variations tht I don't know. and we believe in Sikhism as well., Since we re mixed withhindu Punjabis and Punjabi Jats like the Deols, and Akshay Kumar. I personally, believe in GOD and don't involve in the religious jumbo jumbo politicians spit out.Since to me religion as become more politics than believes anyway. also, Mithi, Sikhism is a new religion, and Sikhs were hindus, till the 5 noble ones were willing to sacrifice their lives to theGuru Gobind, who then turn them into the panache pyare. in our parivaar I have uncles who are blood brothers and one practices Hinduism and other was converted to sikhism.

It apparently wasn't getting out of hand when people declared whether or not others were this or that. So why now?

*Edited because the quote wasn't referring to one poster specifically.

Yeah...I know abt the paanch pyaare. :) In some Hindu punjabi families In Punjab, they say that the tradition of promising the first son to to the Guru, to Sikhism, is still practiced. So the eldest son is a Sikh and younger siblings, Hindus. Fabulous!! Nahin? 😊 So I understand what you are saying.

Yes, that used to happen when our Guru's and all were fighting for the Hindu's. The Hindu's used to give the first son to the Khalsa army, and so he became a Sikh. But Sikhism is a complete different religion now.. and yes every person is welcome in a Gurdwara. Often people tend to misunderstand Sikhism as a sect of Hinduism which is not true, that's what I have been trying to explain in the last few posts :) No offense though, because I love it how people with different religions celebrate all the festivals together in India.
