Of course she can ACT. Otherwise directors like Mani Ratnam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali would not have casted her three times in their movies, they do not make movies for pretty looking actresses, they have strong roles in there movies. Rituparna Ghosh did wonders with her in both the movies he directed with her and proved to the world and her harsh critics that she is here to stay.
From a very first movie Iruvar she proved her critics wrong, she had double role in movie and came out as winner. Her third Hindi film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam definitely made her an "Actress" and Taal made her a superstar and dancing queen of Bollywood after Madhuri Dixit. Not many Bollywood fans have seen Kandukondian Kandukondian which is another fabulous performance by Aishwarya critics called her performance much much better then Tabu and Tabu is of course a great actress. Hamara Dil Aapke Paas hain showed she can play the complex characters pretty well, and she was really good in the movie, according to me one of hers underrated performance. She had short role in Mohabbatain but people still remember Megha from movie which shows she left the impact with her natural performance.
The movie which made international audience/critics notice her and her talent was of course Devdas an outstanding performance which got celebrated. Then came on of her best roles/performances ever, Chokher Bali she played this classic character with ease which gained her so much respect as an actress, People say Bride and Prejudice was not a performance oriented role, well fair enough but majority of people still LOVED her in the movie. She stunned in Khakee and did pretty well in her supporting role which turned as a surprise. National award winning Raincoat great film and amazing performance by Aishwarya and Ajay, she played this difficult role with such an ease. Shabd confusing movie but fabulous performance. Umrao Jaan was another great role and her performance gained loads of appreciation. Even her harsh critics and haters ate their words when they saw Aishwarya's performance in Mani Ratnam's Guru, she stood tall and strong in a male centric film and delivered a pitch perfect performance.
Provoked great role and such an touching performance, western critics called her an excellent actress and audience gave the movie and her performance standing ovations at prestigious festival like Cannes etc. Jodhaa Akbar not a showery role but very natural performance, most of her haters loved her in this movie so that says allot about her acting. Sarkar Raj another powerful performance, she shows her excellence as an actress esp when she takes over the climax. Raavan/Raavanan both got her acclaim, the one common thing with reviews were that Aishwarya performance got green signal. Even in movies like Endhiran The Robot and Action Replayy she was fine. Last but not the least Guzaarish a great great performance which moved people to tears.
If Aishwarya was non actress she would not have had these movies in her career, she would not have gotten these CHARACTER ROLES to play, she would not have worked with these talented directors. If she was talentless she would have just did songs, and few scenes in all the movies, but she got these performance oriented roles from these directors shows how talented she is. Of course she have had her bad performances which every actor have, but she have survived in this industry not ONLY because of her looks but talent as well, even at 36 she got role like Guzaarish, Raavan.
As for her looks, well she is beautiful if some of the people cant look beyond that then sorry for them but that does not make her non actress, Aishwarya have something special in her that is why she survived in this industry and still getting best of the roles. And I don't think her roles in Provoked, Raincoat, Chokher Bali, Guru, Guzaarish, Raavan (to name a few) was to look beautiful, she had strong performance oriented role and she came out as a winner.
It has become habit of people to always complain about Aishwarya as an actress, some people cant digest the fact that a super model, beautiful women can ALSO act. Aishwarya is an fantastic actress, in some roles she is outstanding and in some she is about okay, but that's with all the actors, every actor have flaws.

But f Aishwarya have terrible performances like Albela, HKKN, then Kareena have even more cringe worthy performance in Khushi, and all the terrible movies she did with Tushar. And Rani have her Bichoo, and movies she did with Govinda. Meaning to say all have bad performances, but one cant hide the fact that all these actresses have great performances too.
