Yeah... Agree with Koolchick... Pick some recent films... Like something from 2005 to present ones... With rival actors like SRK and Salman film or a Kareena and a PC film...
Then you will see the drama unfold...😆

Nice topic... both movies about patriotism and love...in different eras too... but lagaan was full of OTT drama, the kind we Indians love...and it had 2 elements that always work...cricket and being one up on the westerners...and in Lagaan toh we beat the white at their own game... so all ingredients for success at box office presented with excellent production values, excellent cast, excellent music...

Swades was a more subtle and modern day take on patriotism...again excellent cast, some very good music...but the screenplay lacked drama, progressed slowly( which worked well at times but made the pace drag at places)- but it had some great moments!

1. An acting award for SRK in Swades or one for Aamir Khan in Lagaan? (how they acted the part)
I'd say both, but if i had choose one- Aamir!

2. An acting award for Gayatri Joshi or one for Gracy Singh? (how they acted the part)
ermmm... none of them deserved an award, but both did give very good performances and both were making their debuts!!

3. Mohan or Bhuvan? (regardless of the actor)
Bhuvan- dynamic, leader, dabangg, risk taker!!

4. Gita or Gauri? (regardless of the actress)
Gauri- supportive of her man, very human

5. Trying to get electricity or winning a cricket match?
the electricity scene for me was one of the worse parts of Swades...too long, too slow... cricket match was great- India winning even if its on screen is always great! :)

6. Pal Pal Hai Bhaari or Radha Kaise Na Jale? (both songs take place in a religious festival)
Radha kaise na jale... nice chemistry between the lead pair, great choreography, Gracy danced beautifully!!

7. Yeh Tara Woh Tara or Mitwa? (both songs show people being won over by the lead character's dream)
Mitwa- a song which is personally very inspiring for me...loved Udit's rendition of yeh taara woh taara , as well

8. Best story is Swades or Lagaan?
As a story, if I were to read it in the form of say a book, I'd prefer Swades... it had many emotional facets which probably were difficult to capture on celluloid, but if they were expressed in several hundred pages would have been more justified!

9. Best soundtrack is Swades or Lagaan?
Lagaan...love all the songs ...but yun hi chala chal from Swades is an all time favorite too!!

10. Best dramatic curve is in Swades or Lagaan?
I loved Mohan's journey to collect the rent form the poor family...his stay in the house, his journey in the train...the boy selling the water...one of the most impactful and emotional sequence for me...brings a lump to the throat each time!

11. White NASA scientists or white British officers/cricket players?
British in Lagaan...slightly caricaturish so that we enjoy seeing them lose in the end with a lot of glee!!

12. Overall best movie? Swades or Lagaan?
I'd say Lagaan...but Swades with its nuances is the one that I can rewatch many times, (but only in parts...)

1. An acting award for SRK in Swades or one for Aamir Khan in Lagaan? (how they acted the part)

It's tough one.. Aamir has had better acts than Lagaan, he was bloody brilliant in this nonetheless.. whereas swades for me SRK's top 3 performances! Both actors portrayed what they were supposed to the T, aamir with his emotions and SRK with subtlety! Can't give a slight edge to anyone?!

2. An acting award for Gayatri Joshi or one for Gracy Singh? (how they acted the part)

I love gracy singh's act here.. starting from the body language, delivery, dance, so on!

3. Mohan or Bhuvan? (regardless of the actor)

Bhuvan, the passion and the zeal that the character brought with him was rather iconic!

4. Gita or Gauri? (regardless of the actress)

LOVED Elizabeth!

5. Trying to get electricity or winning a cricket match?

As someone mentioned before, Lagaan was much more than "winning a cricket match".. Both issues held great importance to their respective periods!

6. Pal Pal Hai Bhaari or Radha Kaise Na Jale? (both songs take place in a religious festival)

7. Yeh Tara Woh Tara or Mitwa? (both songs show people being won over by the lead character's dream)

TIE!!

8. Best story is Swades or Lagaan?

Lagaan had the filmier storyline, executed brilliantly whereas swades was more towards the "documentary" but I felt it was told well!!

9. Best soundtrack is Swades or Lagaan?

Lagaan!!

10. Best dramatic curve is in Swades or Lagaan?

Swades train scene!

11. White NASA scientists or white British officers/cricket players?

LOL the BRITISH officers were bloody good actors and Cpt. Russel i found hot

12. Overall best movie? Swades or Lagaan?

Lagaan is considered a masterpiece by the general perception (commercially and critically) and rightly so! Swades was a feel-good movie but was slow in parts!

Lagaan is a better film...there is more to it than just a cricket match...as a film it is superior to Swades anyday.

But Mohan Bhargav for me. I am in love with Mohan...he makes me all gooey in my heart...LOL! I love him! I love him! I do not know who SRK is when he is playing Mohan!😆

Gita...is also my favorite. She is amazing! I love Gayatri Joshi!

Love love love the love story between Mohan and Gita! Love the humor in their relationship...

It would be unfair if I don't also mention the water scene that makes me cry every single time I see Swades! I feel so privileged and the worries of my life seems so small when the depth of that scene hits my heart...

Both awesome films, but appeal for different reasons. Lagaan has a much more universal appeal, Swades is more identifiable for Indians/NRI.

Lagaan is about the struggle of a people against injustice of the ruling class. It's also about communal harmony, how people of different beliefs and castes, put their differences aside and come together to fight for a common cause. Everyone can identify with this, plus the inclusion of the nation's favourite sport to resolve the dispute, was gonna be a winner, everyone likes an underdog movie, even those unfamilar with the game, will be rooting for the underdogs!

Both had fantastic performances, loved the songs from both films, albeit the songs from Lagaan are more memorable for me.

@koochick & Maddy: Yes, I figured that since these movies are not recent many people won't reply. But they are definitely far more superior movies than a 'Dabangg' or a 'My Name Is Khan'. We can't always have drama on this forum no? Some nice, healthy discussions can also work. 😆 ... But I will try next time. Like I said, this isn't my idea exactly. Need to think of two movies that we can compare like these.

I felt I should answer too. 😃

1. An acting award for SRK in Swades or one for Aamir Khan in Lagaan? (how they acted the part)

Tough. SRK was truly brilliant in this movie. Like everyone mentioned, this was the first movie were he wasn't SRK - the superstar but SRK - the actor. The subtlety and the way he played Mohan, I couldn't picture anyone else in that role.

But Aamir did an amazing job as well. He is Aamir, and always manages to please me. And since I cannot choose between the two I will pick Aamir only because I am a fan of his. Bias, I know! 😆

2. An acting award for Gayatri Joshi or one for Gracy Singh? (how they acted the part)

Gayatri got that confident look in Gita correctly, and Gracy was just too cute too handle. Hmm, but I guess I will pick Gracy.

3. Mohan or Bhuvan? (regardless of the actor)

This is hard. And it is definitely hard for me to take out the image of Aamir playing Bhuvan. 😆

Mohan is more real. He has his flaws and his weaknesses which make him more relatable. Bhuvan though, was the perfect Bollywood hero with his leader-like qualities, innocence, and had all the girls fall for him too.

But if I had to pick in terms of realism, I will go with Mohan.

4. Gita or Gauri? (regardless of the actress)

Gita - strong, determined, a self-made woman who did not run after the man either. Gauri's jealously was cute.

5. Trying to get electricity or winning a cricket match?

Winning a cricket match seems far exciting than getting electricity. And I agree that the cricket match was more than just winning it. Their life was at stake and the fact that they would have to play triple lagaan if they did not win definitely made it superior than the electricity bit. The villagers in Swades could have lived without electricity like they always did before Mohan arrived but the villagers in Lagaan would have cursed their life if they had lost.

6. Pal Pal Hai Bhaari or Radha Kaise Na Jale? (both songs take place in a religious festival)

Radha Kaise Na Jale. Excellent song! Excellent picturisation and excellent choreography! Had lots of sexual tension also. 😆 Pal Pal Hai Bhaari was okay but Gayatri can't dance.

7. Yeh Tara Woh Tara or Mitwa? (both songs show people being won over by the lead character's dream)

Mitwa. I loved Yeh Tara Woh Tara, but Mitwa wins for me.

8. Best story is Swades or Lagaan?

Swades

9. Best soundtrack is Swades or Lagaan?

Lagaan

10. Best dramatic curve is in Swades or Lagaan?

Definitely Lagaan! It was completely obvious who was going to win when the question of a cricket match arises to fix all the problems. But the way they built up to that victory definitely was suspenseful! I was at the edge of my seat even if I knew who was going to win all along!

11. White NASA scientists or white British officers/cricket players?

British officers. They were funny. the NASA scientists didn't have much to do.

12. Overall best movie? Swades or Lagaan?

Lagaan definitely. Had all the qualities of a commercial film but made it into a very enjoyable film also. Swades is definitely a very good movie and watch it whenever it comes on TV, but a little long also.

Yep... Any day these two are far far superior films compared to the big budget ones churned out these days...
But definitely these days we have some good small budget films by new filmmakers which reach out to a wider audience... This was not the case few years back...
Anyways... Some suggestions for next time...
1. DDLJ with a MPK or HAHK...
2. Kaminey with a Omkara or a Chameli...

both are great movies directed by ashutosh gowarikar...but both of these had some unnatural factors...if i had to choose a good ashu movie...i would suggest Khelien hum jee jaan sey...i have recently seen this movie..and its remarakable...and what irony tht it was completely rejected by the Audiences...nobody is interested to know the history and the freedom fighters...
