Ash went through the exact same phase that Rani/Preity is going through now. After Devdas (which was released on July 2002), Ash did NOT have a single "hit" on her credit until she did Dhoom2 (November, 2006) - where her performance was heavily criticized by both fans and critics alike for being "artificial" and "unconvincing". She was struggling with her career, and most people called her a "gone for good" during that phase, which lasted roughly four and half years. Compared with that, KANK was released in mid 2006, and it has been roughly four years that Rani/Preity had a hit. Granted Ash had "critically acclaimed performances" that everyone raved about during that time, but then, even Rani/Preity gave performances during the last four years which got them accolades and awards (Heaven on Earth, LCMD, DBH). It's not as if Ash did not have thousand contacts behind her back as well. Franly, all of them - Ash, Preity, Kajol and esp. Rani had contacts to make their career move forward.
Also, being "successful" does not mean being talented. For instance, Manisha Koirala isn't a very successful actress, but she definitely is a lot more talented than any other actresses we had in this whole decade (except perhaps a few). On the contrary, Katrina is successful, but even her fans admit she isn't talented.
And if Rani/Preity had SRK/KJo/YRF behind their back - Ash had Sanjay Leela Bhansali (God knows what would have happened to this lady if it weren't for him!), Mani Ratnam, Ashka Gowarikar, etc swooning for her. Most male directors are crazy about taking her on their respective films, and it is blatantly obvious why. 😆 Has any female director ever wanted to cast Ash? 😆 Or KJo? 😉
Take away her "beauty" and you are left with an ordinary star who can't act to save her life. Frankly, Ash is a worse actor than a Katrina or a Deepika. At least Kat and Deepika never got the chance to work with top, brilliant directors like Mani or SLB. If SLB, Mani Ratnam and Ashka Gowarikar fails to make her act - then she is a lost cause. Kat and Deepika both are improving, but Ash? How much did she improve with her acting throughout her whole 13-years-old career, especially when she had all the top directors on her hand? 🤔
Aishwariya's expressions are cold and icy most of the time, and her dialogue delivery? Grr, don't even let me get started on that. Her dialogue delivery must be the weakest aspect of her acting. Make her stand in the corner of a room, and you have a beautiful showpiece to look at. Now make her talk - she makes me cringe with her dialogue delivery. Firstly, her voice is a turn off for me, as there is no depth into it, like there isa depth in Rani's/Priyanka's/Vidya's voice, and secondly, her dialogues come off as forced and memorized - not something that she should be saying from her heart.
Yeah, she is a beautiful woman, but her beauty does not translate into good acting, unfortunately.
Disclaimer: Doing what the topic starter asked us for - analyzing her professional career without bringing her personal life into account. If there is any objection to it, then the topic should be closed first (as the topic itself asks and talks about her professional life, comparing it with two other actresses, namely Rani and Preity; it's all their in the OP) - it's not as if I am talking out of the box.
