Whats so special about Veer zara??
It is a recognized universeral hit and it did alright with the critics.
Its songs are memorable and heard around even today. Lata ji's comeback into playback singing with this album was also great and the fact that even at that age she could knock out any singer.
Rani mukherjee awed me in her portrayal, despite being in supported cast she outshined everyone in the movie. Very nice character played with right amout of fire, attitude and spunk by rani.
Last but not the least yash chopra returned to direction with this one, not his best work but the way he wrote rani's character.. was nice. I hope he makes more movies.

Personally, I don't think Ash could have done justice to the role of Zaara. It was a character that needed innocence, cuteness, with hints of maturity and bubblyness; Ash lacks in most of these departments while Preity excels. The character was very subtle and it grows on you the instant it comes on scree.
I think if Ash would have done this role, she would have looked like plastic, you needed someone who looked more like a normal person with subtle beauty. Even SRK said that line in the movie "she was not the most beautiful girl I have ever seen, but there was something about her"
I loved Veer-Zaara and it's innocent romance, it reminds you of the old love stories of heer-ranjha where the guy and gal don't really have to get physical to know they are in love. It was a pure film.
I usually steer clear of Ash movies, especially in the recent times when her movies are such a bore Umrao, Raavan, Sarkar Raaj. The only reason I watch Jodha-Akbar was because I love Hrithik and I don't think there was anything special about Ash as Jodha, anyone could have done that role.

Hi! this was such a lovely way of saying it! i really loved ur explanation..:-)

n well it felt nice to see a movie where a girl is only in a Salwaar Kameez n still look good in a time when we see half clad girls in almost every movie(not that its degrading..even i like seeing those too)
t has innocence n that old world charm which hindi films seem to be losing by the minute..a pity cz thats wt sets apart the hindi films 4m every other cinema around the world...
only a Yash Chopra movie could have woven that magic once again...

If we're discussing the film, then I found Veer Zaara extremly boring, it just dragged on throughout. I think Preity was good in the film and suited her role but the character/film didn't give her that much scope to show her talent. Aishwarya would have also been wasted in this film, it was nothing special.
Although the music was good :P

I liked the music at that time but nothing else really. Thought the movie was one of Yash Chopra's weak directions. The story was absurd and the leads hammed their way thru the movie. Rani was the only saving grace with her earnestness. I was really expecting something like Lamhe so perhaps my expectations were too high but for me it was a really boring. Aishwarya has flourished inspite of falling out with all these camps - Khans, johars and Chopras I think she was lucky otherwise her career would have been the same as Prietys. She got to work in a lot of non commercial movies(Raincoat, Chokker Bali) because of this fall out so IMO she did very well for herself.
