Does being a star kid ensure success?
Thousands of talented people flock to Mumbai everyday, to attain stardom in Bollywood, but just a handful of them manage to get a break. Having a Godfather in Bollywood spares some of the hassle of running around and struggling to get the right exposure.
Star kids often don't have to go through the grind and struggle, as their parents' influence is enough to get work. But the question is does that ensure their long term sustenance too?
Both Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan are super stars in their own right. Their star status helped Abhishek Bachchan to get a break, but does he owe his current status to his parents? Though 'Refugee' got him noticed, he subsequently had almost a dozen flops, before he could deliver a critical hit perfomance in 'Yuva'.
Amitabh's super stardom could do nothing to save his train of gravy films. Like father, producers were not willing to give up on the son, so the genes had to save his face in the end.
Vinod Khanna was a super star too, and Akshaye Khanna managed to get an easy entry into Bollywood, and a sensational publicity. He however, couldn't achieve as much success, again like his dad, as opposed to the Bachchans, despite being a good actor. Perhaps he lacked the aura like Abhishek and almost started charging in crores even before attaining super stardom, which didn't go down well with the producers.
Vivek Oberoi made a sensational debut with 'Company', and subsequently gave a few other back to back hits. He was touted as the super star of tomorrow, at that point of time, despite Suresh Oberoi not being a very big star of his times. Inspite of that, he couldn't survive in the long run. He has supposedly rubbed many industry wallahs the wrong way, which cost him his career. Attitude issues and professionalism can be a major decisive factor which can't save even a star kid.
Shekhar Suman enjoys almost the same status as Suresh Oberoi, but his son Adhyan isn't even half as successful as Vivek. This goes on to prove, that connections and influence can get them a break, but it's talent and personality, which helps them sustain in the long run. It's only his link up with Kangana, for which, he is still in news.
Arya Babbar too, like Adhyan, failed to connect with the audience. Even if Raj Babbar decides to make films like 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai' and 'Krishh' for him, he will not sustain in the long run. Some guys just dont have the as they say in Bollywood, X factor!
Rakesh Roshan was almost a non-entity. Hrithik on the contrary turned out to be a super star. Apart from talent, and looks, he is professional and has shaped his career very well. Vivek's career might have had a different fate altogether, had Suresh Oberoi devoted as much energy and resources on his films, like papa Roshan invested in beta's career.
Despite having a super star father, and a very powerful sister, Tushar has failed to attain super stardom. So far, he has managed to get either second leads, or has acted in films produced by Balaji. He lacks star power. The only benefit perhaps star kids like him get, is that they can manage to hang around, even when they are out of work, and re-emerge after a while, while others disappear from the scene. Manoj Bajpai for instance, perhaps would have had bigger budget films in his kitty, had he been a star kid.
Talent, personality and aura, is however a must. Yesteryear superstar Mithun Chakraborty, at one point of time was considered to be a strong contender to the numero uno slot and a rival of Amitabh Bachchan. His son, Momoh's film 'Jimmy' finally launched after years of publicity, but he has failed to strike positive vibes with the audience. Neither does he have the looks, nor the personality, so even a super star like Mithun failed to help launch his career successfully.
Saif Ali Khan is a classic example of a star kid, who has gone on to prove, that shaping one's career professionally is very important, apart from looks, and personality. He almost disappeared, despite being Sharmila's son, till he reemerged with films like 'Dil Chahta Hai', and 'Hum Tum', which showed him in a different light.
Fardeen Khan on the other hand, inspite of having Feroze Khan, who devoted his time and energy to launch his son, like Rakesh Roshan, is on the verge of disappearing.
After the first break, in which, they are judged by their talent and personality, its an actors professionalism, and career management, which help these star kids to survive in the long run.
