Life of your dreams

28 Jul 2007, 0000 hrs IST ,TNN

What do you dream of – Abhishek Bachchan or a house in Bali? Rouge asked Indian women in different cities to share their dreams with us.

75% dream of looking pretty all the time

Women just want to look gorgeous. The option we gave them were: the power to read minds; to become invisible; to take a peek into the future; but 75% of the women still chose 'looking pretty all the time' with the option of reading minds as a close second. Well, who wants to read minds when you can grab eyeballs!

86% want to scrap a colleague

When you see one of your team mates or friend winning all those accolades despite you doing a fairly 'praiseworthy' job, it hurts. And before you realise it, your mind is on a trip of its own. But there is nothing one can do about it. (Except, of course, some voodoo). So when we asked our women who they'd want scrapped, we expected to hear bosses, in laws and slimy men who say they'll call and don't. But 86% jumped at the chance of eliminating a colleague or friend who hogs all the limelight.

95% wish to be desired most by their partner

When Shania Twain sang, "The woman in me needs the man in you...", it defined what most women dream of. There you are, your email 700 words long, asking him, 'How was your day?' and saying 'I'm really looking forward to the dinner...', and he responds with 'Cool. Catch you later. Bye.' So tired of competing with the TV, computer, sundry other gadgets and cricket matches, 95% of the women dreamed of being the objects their partners most desire.

60% dream of quitting work for a happy life

It's the coolest dream: handing in your resignation and taking off for endless hours of pampering yourself, shopping, lazing around, cuddling with our partner or doing absolutely nothing. That's why 60% of the women want to quit work for the happy life.

84% women dream of a man who never cheats

If you ask a woman to define her perfect man, she'll say handsome, wealthy, muscled, well spoken, great in bed, etc etc. Not so 84% of the women who we spoke to. They want a partner who will never ever cheat on them. "I dream of a man who will stay faithful forever," says Pooja Kaur, a legal executive, Oh, and 65% said they wouldn't mind if Mr. Faithful was a corporate head honcho! Neither would he we're thinking!

72% women picked SRK over Brad Pitt

If you''e wondering why? Here's our theory: good-looking partners don't make loyal husbands or good fathers. Brad Pitt may be have great sex appeal but he dumped his wife of some years for another (and what's worse hotter) woman, which is a big no-no for our women. "He is a risky proposition," says one. On the other hand, Shah Rukh is a perfect combination – successful actor and doting father. What else could a girl ask for? So, it's no surprise King Khan bags 72% of the votes.

75% would love to be Sushmita Sen

If a genie offered you a chance to wake up with a celeb's life, whose would you choose? Sushmita Sen's, Aishwarya Rai's, Angelina Jolie's, Shobha De's.... No points for guessing this one right, Sushmita won the maximum votes here. She epitomises an independent woman who speaks her mind and does exactly as she pleases.

40% dream of living in a penthouse

Women find penthouses the most stunning places in which to live Can you blame us? After all that's what dreams are made of!

A feast for SRK & Bollywood-smitten Poles

Young Polish girls scream and whistle as Shah Rukh Khan comes on screen. Hrithik Roshan too charms his way into many hearts with his dance numbers...Bollywood madness has hit the Polish capital.

Smitten by Hindi films, Poles here are getting to feast on them at an outdoor Bollywood film festival in the Pole Mokotowskie Park through July and August.

British Airways is sponsoring a total of 10 weekly screenings, starting at 9.45 p.m. every Thursday. The festival has been organised jointly by the Indian embassy and the Polish Film Art Foundation.

'It is a novel experiment in attracting young Poles towards India. And so far the response has been very enthusiastic,' said Indian Ambassador Anil Wadhwa.

The festival is part of the 'Summer Film Capital' series, which features both popular and lesser-known directors from around the world.

The Bollywood series has started with Karan Johar's well-known film, 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', which was the first ever Indian movie to be dubbed into Polish two years ago. The film was a big success in Poland.

The festival is making movie-lovers come in large numbers, especially to see their heartthrob Shah Rukh who has become almost an iconic figure for Polish youth. The moment he comes on screen, young girls scream and keep whistling to express their joy.

Some Poles have also been charmed by Hrithik Roshan, who co-stars in the movie with Kareena Kapoor.

'Over the years Bollywood has become like a fast food item in Poland and the popularity it has gained is fantastic. Young Poles are attracted to the liveliness of the cinema, its exotic characters and the way it blends various genres,' remarked Janusz Krzyzowski, president of the India Polish Cultural Committee.

Soon 'Baghban', 'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Karan Arjun', 'Pardes', 'Mukaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Refugee' and Raj Kapoor's old classic 'Boot Polish' will also be screened. Old generations still remember Kapoor's 'Aawara' and 'Shri 420', which were great hits in Eastern Europe in the 1950s.

Bet you didn't know.......
I've often been hounded about what Hrithik Roshan is really, really like. Adorable is the word. Now why does a hard-as-nails person like me get gooey?

Well, simply because he may not have been here at all if he'd listened to the Roshan family's wish that he go and study in the US, after completing his B.Com from Sydenham College.

Also bet you didn't know that as a kid, he would be competing with Aditya Chopra for the best dancer choc-o-award at birthday parties. Cute. Also that his staff - make-up man James, spot-boy Nandan and driver Susheel - have been with him from the outset of his career. Dugu's other permanent faithfuls - cats Tiger and Pearl and dog Puggy. Aamir Khan, at one time, would wear concealed platforms in his shoes to look taller

Now since we're talking Roshans, also let it be known that Rakesh Roshan was working as assistant director to Mohan Kumar, who was filming Aap Aaye Bahaar Aaye.. and it seems Pinkie, daughter of J Om Prakash, breezed into a party at Mohan Kumar's house. Pehli mulaqat led to marriage.

Forget Salman Khan.. Shah Rukh Khan can draw with amazing draughtsmanship.. and could give some of the best sketch artists of the country a run for their lakhs and crores. I haven't seen him paint yet.. but I do possess a sketch of Paris he did for me. It was a birthday present.. and hangs in my drawing room, next to an Anjolie Menon.

Cool! SRK only smokes one made-in India brand of cigarette, whether he's in New York or Tokyo.. it's very strong.. I sneaked a puff when he wasn't looking and I'm still coff-coffcoffing. SRK only smokes one made-in India brand of cigarette, whether he's in New York or Tokyo.. it's very strong.

He also has his loyal staffers, man Friday Subash, make-up man Ravi, driver Mohan and bodyguard Yasin.

Aamir Khan, at one time, would wear concealed platforms in his shoes to look taller. Ulp, I hope he doesn't hit me or go into another harangue about the wicked ways of the media. And I do hope Mr Amitabh Bachchan does not want me to interview him at this point and say how wonderful the media is (as if we didn't know). Okay, the little known secret about him is that he paints too (not very well, I'm afraid).

Shah Rukh's stardom is like nothing I've ever known"

Main hub for Shahrukh Khan fans to talk about him, his movies, his charisma, his personality, news, events, co-stars, wife and more...

"Shah Rukh's stardom is like nothing I've ever known"

by VaraMohini on Sat Jul 14, 2007 3:06 am

A widely praised new biography of Shah Rukh Khan by Anupama Chopra, author of Sholay: The Making of a Classic, will be released in India in August. Nisha Susan speaks to the award-winning writer

Who gave you the most interesting insights about SRK?

I would say SRK himself! He is by far the most fascinating source and tells the best stories. He is supremely articulate and is a very entertaining speaker.

Does your book overturn received ideas of SRK?

The most prevalent perception about SRK is that he is a bigger star than he is an actor. My book cannot overturn that perception, only a movie can! That notion about Shah Rukh has been a singular note in his career right from his theatre days with Barry John. Despite people laughing at him, his friends making fun of him, that style has been constant. His friends would say, aaj chhath ko uda diya! What was interesting for me was how he used that over-the-top, highly energetic style and transformed it into global superstardom.

Your book starts at an unlikely place — in a small town in Georgia — with an SRK fan who dreams one night that he is dancing with SRK.

I heard bizarre stories about SRK fans everywhere, over and over again.

There was one moment with SRK that I will never forget. It was in the rural outskirts of Chandigarh during the production of Veer-Zaara. The scene needed a pastoral setting. The unit had just arrived in this field and I stepped into the makeup van to chat with SRK. We spent an hour talking. Then we came out of the van. First, I stepped out, then SRK followed me. I was suddenly hit by this strange, very loud sound. It was frightening. When I had stepped into the van the field had been empty.

Now there were 400 people chanting SRK's name. It was surreal. More so because I had been sitting for an hour with SRK with very little sense of talking to God. There was none of the old-style megalomania of stars about Shah Rukh. I had forgotten that this guy is worshipped. His stardom is like nothing I have ever experienced. Being around him is nonstop entertainment.

What did you yourself most want to know about SRK?

I wanted to find the 'X' factor in the whole SRK phenomenon. Obviously, there really is no key to explain how he arrived where he is or who he is. There is no single factor to explain why he, who to many is a mediocre actor and a mediocre looker, is the face of post-liberalised India.

What is the one thing about SRK that few people know?

I didn't know that his first movie role was in Arundhati Roy and Pradeep Krishen's In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones. I could not believe it. I dug up the movie and watched him in it and keeled over laughing. There he was, in three scenes, just one of the crowd. He was quite hurt about not landing a lead role in that film.

Does he remain elusive to you or do you now feel you know him well?

SRK will always be elusive to me. SRK is fiercely intelligent. He reveals only what he chooses to reveal. He will only tell you what he wants you to know. There are spaces in his life in which someone like me would never be admitted

Your book explores SRK, the city of Mumbai and Bollywood. How has SRK shaped Bollywood?

I think SRK has shaped Bollywood enormously. I think his presence and the work he did with Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra structured 90s Bollywood. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge was a watershed moment in terms of the overseas market, stories and how characters were shaped.

Then he picked up Karan Johar who was Aditya's assistant director and they did Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was another watershed moment.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai transformed the style, the costumes, the look of Hindi films. Shah Rukh is the face of New Bollywood. When I first started reporting on Bollywood even in the early 90s, most of the directors were men in their 50s. It was still a cottage industry and quite unprofessional.

SRK and the directors he worked with had a lot to do with changing that.

What is your favourite Hindi film?

My all-time favourite still is Sholay. For people from my generation there is nothing like Sholay and no one like Amitabh Bachchan. That reverential low-angle view we still reserve for Mr Bachchan.

Finally, did SRK stop you from writing up specific stuff on him?

Never. He never told me what to write or what not to write. He made it clear from the start this was going to be my take on him.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee on Koffee with Karan

13th July 2007 09.01 IST
By Agencies

Season two of Koffee With Karan will open on July 15 with three Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan , Kajol and cousin Rani Mukherjee chatting with host Karan Johar .

Kajol and Rani discuss the media speculation that they don't get along though they are members of the same family.

SRK talks about the mid-life crisis he is going through, the constant comparison with Amitabh Bachchan and the rumors about his relationship with Karan, a release issued by Star said.

The trio talk about Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna , Kaun Banega Crorepati, Mallika Sherawat and the hottest couple in Bollywood -- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan , with a lot of special moments and a lot of fun.

If reports are to be believed, Karan is ready to create a casting coup in his next movie, which is tentatively titled 'Khan'. While it goes without saying that SRK will helm the cast of any K-Jo film, what comes as a pleasant surprise is that Kajol will team up again with SRK after many years.

SRK and Kajol have been a very hit Bollywood jodi and have given hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham , and the superhit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge .

A sip of Karan

Karan Johar feels he has broadened the profile of a director

He is here, there, everywhere except behind the camera. Didn't we know Karan Johar as a director? Today, he is a model, a host, a brand ambassador….the latest being a watch company, Timond which has appointed him as its worldwide brand am bassador.

"I feel I have broadened the profile of the director. Earlier, film-makers preferred to remain low profile out of shyness or policy. I have neither. I endorse products that I wear – like Timond – and I don't feel out of place in front of the camera," says Karan.

But in the same vein, he adds he is not asking others to follow. "Like my friend Adi (Aditya Chopra) doesn't want to be seen, so we should respect his point of view."Known for delivering escapist cinema with aplomb, Karan's first brush with cine reality in the form of "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" failed to strike a chord with the Indian audience. "I don't consider "KANK" a failure.

The plot managed to raise debates and discussions. This is what a director wants."

Of late, his popular show "Koffee With Karan" is doing a kind of public relations exercise for films that are going to be released.

"It has happened with only two films "The Namesake" and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

But this has been the trend worldwide where hosts interview stars of films that are going to be released or are in news."

On his affinity with Shah Rukh Khan, Karan feels he is not limiting his creative options.

"I work with him not just because he is a bankable star, but because he is the best human being I have come across."

Karan is now writing the script for his next film. "It's at a very preliminary stage so I can't say whether it will be escapist or realistic."

Before that he would complete the animated version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where Shah Rukh, Rani and Kajol will lend their voices.

Shah Rukh Khan hounded by the press

posted in Shahrukh Khan |
14th July 2007

Shahrukh Khan had a clear cut indication that the media missed him badly when he was holidaying in London for nearly a month. Recently King Khan and Mani Ratnam were called as the guests of honor on the occasion of the music launch of the mythological film Jai Jagannath. It was yet another music launch till Shahrukh came.

First it was the uncontrollable crowd and then it was the struggling media which was falling onto each other to get one glimpse of the super star. Things got so out of control that a glass door shattered all over the place leaving Shahrukh with mild bruises. And this is what the ever jubilant star has to say about the event, "The media's overtures are always like this - in fact, their love is not complete without some shattered glass thrown in for good measure. So thank you, that you all love me so much. May buildings and monuments crumble next time! I have been abroad for a month, so I guess the people really missed me." SRK's humor never leaves him, not even before the paparazzi!
