Ravi Chopra pulled his father's film ahead by a week to avoid clash with Chak De India.
30 Jul, 2007 06:06 pm ISTl Praveen Lance Fernandes/INDIATIMES MOVIES
There were always whispers that all was never well between brother's B.R. Chopra and Yash Chopra for a very long time. Rewind back to 1959, when elder brother B.R. gave Yash Chopra a chance to direct Dhool Ka Phool under his banner B.R. Films. A little more than a decade and some films later Yash Chopra decided to start his own production house Yash Raj Films which today is one of India's premier studios.

Since then there was word of some uneasiness between the two. However, all whispers were silenced when Yash Chopra attended the music launch of the colored version of BR Chopra's classic film Naya Daur.

Now as Naya Daur is being re-released in colour, what is interesting to see is that Yash Raj's Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De India will be releasing a week later.

"Ideally 10 August would have been a better day for us as the original released on 15 August 1957. Unfortunately I couldn't do that because of Chak De India ", says Ravi Chopra.

So Ravi pulls the film back by a week to avoid needless family confrontation. "I wouldn't call it a clash", says B.R. Chopra's son Ravi Chopra. "We purposely kept it a week away to avoid unnecessary competition.

Incidentally this is not the first occasion when such a situation arose. Yash Raj's Kabul Express released on 15, December 2006, exactly a week after Ravi Chopra's film Baabul (produced under the B.R. Films banner) released.

While Naya Daur faces strong opposition from Gandhi My Father and Cash, Chak De India has it easy as the delayed films The blue Umbrella and Kaafila hit the marquee.

I'll write Don 2 on a clean slate
By: Subhash K Jha
August 1, 2007, Mid-day
Farhan Akhtar says he will pen the script to the sequel himself

Naya Daur: Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar
Farhan Akhtar is excited about the sequel to Don, starring Shah Rukh Khan. While the first film was written by his father, Javed Akhtar in collaboration with Salim Khan, he will write the sequel himself.

Here, the young director talks about Don 2, clears the air about the spoof on Don in Partner and why only Shah Rukh Khan has been finalised for the sequel.

What do you think of Rajpal Yadav spoofing Don in Partner?
I've no issues with that. The more people do to keep both the Dons alive — Mr Bachchan's and mine — the happier I am.

We hear there's a sequel to your film?
Yes, there's something I'm working on with Shah Rukh. Let's see when it materialises. I'm very fascinated by Don's character. I want to see where he goes in the sequel.

If I can carry him forward and make him more powerful than he was in the first film, then I'll go ahead and make it. He's an interesting, flamboyant, larger-than-life character who thinks he can get away with anything.

Will it have Shah Rukh and Priyanka?
Only Shah Rukh is a given in the cast at this point.

Will Mallika be in it?
No.

Are you writing Don 2?
Yes, this time the writing will be mine. I didn't want to divert too far from the original in Don, but with Don 2, I'll write on a clean slate with no rules to follow. The journey from a remake to a sequel should be interesting.

You seem more charged than ever!
There's more emphasis being placed on writing. There are a lot of talented young writers and I get a lot of exciting scripts to read.

We've always said we want to bring new writing and directorial talent in our production house (Excel Entertainment). There's been a sea change in the kind of script that are coming to us from the time we started out six years ago.

Did you remake Don because there was a shortage of writing talent?
No. The script I'm going to direct with Irrfan Khan (Voice From The Sky) was something I wrote immediately after Dil Chahta Hai. At that time, I didn't feel it was the right time to make it.

Since I have to direct children in the film, I had to be mentally prepared for the challenge. Now is the right time to make Voice From The Sky as the market has changed.

If I had made it right after Dil Chahta Hai, it wouldn't have found the right outlets. There were no multiplexes back then.

SRK readies to 'bare' it all!
1 Aug 2007, 0000 hrs IST, TNN
And he has every reason to, he'll be shooting a song for Om Shanti Om, but this is no ordinary number.
Shah Rukh Khan is gymming like never before. Even if he's had a long exhausting day at work, he hits the gym with a vengeance.
And he has every reason to, he'll be shooting a song for Om Shanti Om , but hang on, this is no ordinary number.
SRK will be posing bare-chested for the song, and he wants his body to be nothing short of perfect. Believe it or not, he's almost
getting there, and he's undoubtedly the envy of most of the younger dudes in town. And we can't 'bare' this wait anymore, SRK.
So turn on the heat, quick!

Shimmering Stunner: Sushmita Sen

Sushmita Sen has never really dared to bare in her films, but in Mudassar Aziz's Dulha Mil Gaya she's going to be seen in a range of sexy swimwear.

Sen plays a diva called Shimmer in the film (which also stars Shah Rukh Khan and Fardeen Khan), and rest assured you're going to see a lot more of the sexy stunner than you've ever seen before.

So much so, that the producers are guarding her snapshots with their life and won't release them till the film releases!

Queen be?

Will Queen Elizabeth II accept the invitation to Chak De's high-profile premiere at London?
Posted On Thursday, August 02, 2007, Mumbaimirror

Sandipan Dalal

A still from Chak De

With the ongoing The Indian Festival in London, it didn't come as a surprise to see Yashraj Films inviting Queen Elizabeth II for the high-profile premiere of Chak De India at Somerset Hall. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, which premieres on August 9, is a highlight of this festival. However, thinking heads at Yashraj Films are yet to get a confirmation from the Queen's representatives. Says a reliable source from the production company, "We expressed our desire to have the Queen over for the premiere to the London Mayor Ken Livingstone. He has communicated our message to her and we have sent her a formal invitation. If all goes well she will be gracing the premiere."

Post-Shilpa Shetty's Big Brother stint in UK, anything Indian generates a lot of curiosity among Londoners. This led to the London Mayor and our tourism department settle for a three-month-long festival focussing on Indian art, theatre, music, films, food, fashion and business. The Chak De India premiere has been strategically planned to showcase superstar Shah Rukh Khan and give average Londoners a taste of Bollywood films.

A reliable source says, "If the Queen of England cannot make it, the Mayor Ken Livingstone will surely be there. Yash and Pamela Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri and director Shimit Amin are expected to attend the premiere."

Queen Elizabeth II
Yashraj Films prefer to maintain a stoic silence over the grand premiere. Members of the production house's London office refused to comment on the issue. Monika Bhattacharyya the spokesperson of their Mumbai office was reluctant to give out the details. "I'm not handling the London premiere. So I wouldn't know the details," she said.

The Big B and SRK seem to be in the mood for a patch up, if the gifts they've been sending each other are any indication

Pssst: AB is also part of Khan's home production Om Shanti Om!

Ek haath le, ek haath de: Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan
Could it be that the rivalry between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan is finally ebbing? Apparently, the thawing process has begun as the two actors have been sending each other expensive gifts over the last few months.

Playing the game

Recently, Shah Rukh was shooting for Om Shanti Om in Film City when the Big B dropped by the sets and chatted with him and director Farah Khan for 45 minutes (he had been shooting nearby).

Then, before leaving for London for his appointment with Madame Tussaud's wax museum, SRK gifted Bachchan an expensive computer game that he spoke to this writer about in a recent interview.

He said, "I don't know much about computer games, but Shah Rukh has gifted me one. I don't know how to play it, but when I took it home my six-year old grandson Agastya knew how to play it within a few seconds!" he said then.

It was now Bachchan's turn to return the favour, and he did so by sending SRK a Dolce & Gabbana jacket with a note that said, "Let bygones be bygones."

Big B, who is currently in Hyderabad shooting for Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj, admits, "Shah Rukh gave me a white Dolce & Gabbana leather jacket.

I gave him a D & G jacket too as a return gesture along with a pen. But I never said, 'Let bygones be bygones'. That would imply we have differences, when, in fact, we do not."

The Big B is also rumoured to be making a special appearance in SRK's home production, Om Shanti Om, but Bachchan says, "We were all going to the Filmfare Awards function this year when Farah asked me to say a few words into the camera for her film, which I did. I don't know if that can be termed as a guest appearance."

SRK loves Chak De!

Proud of it: Shah Rukh Khan
Contrary to rumours that Shah Rukh Khan is upset with Chak De! India director Shimit Amin, a source close to the actor tells us that he's very fond of
the young director and his work.

The source insists, "SRK likes Shimit very much and has never interfered in anything to do with the film.

Shimit was an assistant director on Asoka, so SRK and he go back a long way. SRK is very proud of Chak De!"

Hmm. So now you know SRK's take on the supposed brouhaha

Chak De's music is young, peppy

Sumit Bhattacharya, Rediff News / Movies

Shah Rukh Khan

August 02, 2007 13:53 IST

The production revolution that has swept Bollywood in recent years has included the music as well. The once trademark screeching violins and raga-based compositions have been replaced by 21 st century loops, beats, distorted guitars and rap.

It has its pros and cons, depending on which side of the fence you are looking at it from.

If Rang De Basanti was part of the first generation of that new Bollywood sound, the music of Chak De! India is the second generation.

The Yash Raj Film's offering stars Shah Rukh Khan as the coach of the Indian women's hockey team. As the mentor, Kabir Khan moulds a rag-tag bunch of girls into a fighting unit that has its eyes set on being the world champions.

It's an ambitious premise, given the fate of India's national game and the neglect sports has suffered at Bollywood's hands. Nagesh Kukunoor's Iqbal was a glorious exception -- a movie as touching as it was inspiring. But then, that was about a game that is a national obsession.

A still from Chak De! IndiaHowever, if the music of the film is any indication, Chak De has the ingredients to appeal to the younger crop of moviegoers.

The soundtrack -- by Salim-Sulaiman, one of the most underrated music-maker duos in the business -- is as spiffy, peppy and young as a film trying to inspire a young India should be.

The album starts with Chak De! India, sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Salim Merchant and Marianne D'Cruz. And it sets the tone for the soundtrack, with programmed grooves laced with some nice sarangi and shehnai. It's the kind of electronic bhangra we are now used to, having heard soundtracks like Dus and Dhoom.

The second track Badal Pe Paon Hai straight-ahead chick-rock (pardon the apparent sexism, but there is no other way to define it) injected with some rock n' roll. You can almost see the dressing room dances. If you're wondering what a dressing room dance is, ask Sreesanth.

Next up is Ek Hockey Doongi Rakh Ke, what seems like the title track for the movie. It starts with a rather cheesy rap by Shah Rukh -- nothing wrong with his voice, just the words are rather funny -- and goes into a sort of introduction of the team, with a bit of national introduction thrown in into the lyrics, sung by the gang of girls, KK, and SRK.

A still from Chak De! IndiaBad Bad Girls, sung by Anushka Manchanda, is up next, an 1980s-rock-meets-break-beats song that will surely find favour with discotheque DJs.

Then comes the best song of the album, Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jan, sung very well by Krishna and Salim Merchant. The lovely melody is backed superbly by the loop-sprinkled arrangement.

The sixth track, a remix of Hockey by the Medival Punditz, is everything an electronic remix should be.

And the finale is Sattar Minute, the coach's pre-final dressing room speech, dipped in some sweet strings in the background.

The bottom line: Don't be surprised if you hear Chak De's music blasting from car and nightclub speakers soon. For old-schoolers: Sorry, but it seems this new Bollywood sound is here for a while.

"When the woman's hockey team won an international tournament there was just a small write-up in the paper. The Cricket team got 2 pages"- Jaideep Sahni
Click above for more stills

Jaideep Sahni is a new age writer and lyricist with quality films like Company, Khosla Ka Ghosla and super hit films like Bunty Aur Babli to his credit. He is excited about his next film Chak De India starring Shahrukh Khan and Vidya Malvade which according to him is the story of an underdog. IndiaFM chatted up with him on what all went into making Chak De happen, how the team is dealing with the thanda response to the promotional video of the film and why Shahrukh Khan wasn't unhappy with the film's director as reported in some media circles.

How did Chak De India happen?
Three years back I was in Delhi. At that time I came across a report in the news paper that the Indian women's hockey team had won an international tournament. My heart swelled with pride. The write up was very small and that struck me. If the Indian cricket team would have won something, then they would have got two pages. This subject kept turning in my head. It grew on me. I researched, read a lot on hockey and hung around in stadiums. After Bunty Aur Babli, Adi asked me what are you doing next! I told him there's a story that is not leaving my head. It is about women's hockey team, they do well against foreign teams who have hundred times better resources. I narrated to Adi and he said that this film has to be made. I started developing it and then the principal character of coach came in. Shimit joined us and he is not the kind of person who'd do a film just for the heck of it.

Why did you think of Shahrukh Khan to play the coach?
Once we started writing, it just seeped into our minds that Shahrukh has to be there. He has been a hockey player and we found the same spirit in him.

What was the next step?
The search for girls took half a year and training them took about four months. Searching for the players was a hell of a task. There were parts where we required the physical presence while there were some parts for which we needed actors. Then we realized it was a much bigger thing. From 4:30 in the morning till 2:30 in the afternoon all players were practicing hockey after that till evening tea it was time for acting. After evening tea there was dialect training. The players were from all over the country and the dialect had to be right. After that there was gym, sauna and injury management. We also had motivation speakers, players from various sports etc. We had decided that we won't roll camera till the time they look like players. A team has to look like a team. Then there were readings of their parts with Shahrukh.

The promos of the film haven't generated much curiosity. In fact there were reports that the video of one of the song was hooted when it was played in between Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
We had been sleeping for 2-3 hours at night. We saw these things in the papers but we were too much into it. Once it got over we slept uninterrupted. The curiosity about the film is natural as it's an underdog story. Our entire promotion plan is a mix of all kinds of things. We showed the music video. It was a new thing. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

What about reports of SRK being unhappy with Shimit Amin and the entire making of the film?
Interestingly we used to laugh at all these reports. If anyone works with Shahrukh they know the kind of commitment he brings. He also acted as an off screen coach as well. He helped in things like crowd management.

Movies based on sports haven't worked in Bollywood barring a rare Lagaan. Does that bother you?
If a movie is a worthwhile experience people will come and watch it. Our job is to tell stories and that's what counts.

You're also associated with Madhuri's comeback film Aaja Nachle?
I've written the script and lyrics.

What are your forthcoming projects?
I've written lyrics for Disney-Yashraj's venture Roadside Romeo directed by Jugal Hansraj. I've also written lyrics for the title track of Johny Gaddar.
