Mwaahs and more…

On Friday night, much of Bollywood descended on a posh resto-bar in Juhu. There were Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Karan Johar, to begin with. Our lensman caught them all in the act

The famous five

While Shah Rukh Khan hobnobbed with others around, wife Gauri, who was in a rollicking mood, posed for pictures patiently and gladly. She almost seemed to be in the mood for getting her portfolio done, so gladly did she pose for pictures! After a round of air kissing, the couple camped in a corner with friends Karan Johar and Preity Zinta who had come with beau Ness Wadia. Preity, dressed in all-black, sported wind-blown hair.

Lensman and wife

Unlike Gauri, Avanti Birla wasn't shutterbug friendly at all. She not only refused to get herself clicked, but also asked photographers to delete any pictures they had clicked of hers. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan's better half, could have done with a better outfit. Kiran Rao, the surprise guest at the party, was seen clad in a boho costume with a bandana hiding her lovely curls. Mandira Bedi came in with husband Raj Kaushal and stuck to his side all evening.

The singles mingle

Newly-single Kelly Dorjee was seen engrossed in deep conversation with fellow member of the newly-singles club, Rozza Katalino. Now, what were they discussing? Later, he took some time to charm other ladies as well. On the lookout already Kelly? Dino Morea found company in friend Amrita Arora (single by default since boyfriend Usman Afzal wasn't around).

Mood Swings

Amisha Patel, accompanied by director Vikram Bhatt, was in an amicable mood for a change. She joked and laughed a lot, which she hasn't been doing lately. Then there was Mohit Ahlawat and Prashant Raaj, Ram Gopal Varma's former and current favourites, respectively. We expected fireworks between them, but much to our disappointment, they behaved like friends.

SRK says, Chuck de!

Tiff with director Shimit Amin ended in the film getting new promos

Looks like the shoot of Yash Raj's Chak De! India was a battleground for more than just a hockey match. Sources close to the project reveal that all is not well between Shah Rukh Khan and director Shimit Amin.

It is learnt that the two have been at loggerheads right from day one of making the movie. However things really blew out of proportion when Shimit approved the early teasers of Chak De that was released along with Shaad Ali's Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

A source reports, "Shah Rukh wasn't too thrilled with those promos. He was extremely involved in the entire making of the movie and didn't feel the teasers did justice to the product."

As a result, the promos got shelved to make way for fresh ones. Chak De!, which also stars model Vidya Malvade, revolves around a hockey coach and his all-girl team whom he wants to emerge as champions.

Monika Bhattacharya, spokesperson for Yash Raj Films throws light on the issue and says, "There was no pulling out of any promos. We had a music video for the film along with Jhoom.

That was not a promo of any sorts." Adding that the new teasers will hit the screen with David Dhawan's Partner she says, "There will be one promo along with Partner and a new music video on television from tomorrow."

Reacting to reports of differences between Shah Rukh and Shimit she says, "Nothing of this sort has happened. Yash Raj directly makes the decision on promos and teasers and Shimit was very much in sync with every decision taken."

However sources close to the Yash Raj camp talk openly about Shimit and SRK falling out, "Shah Rukh and Shimit had loads of creative differences during the making of Chak De! India. Not just technical ones, but those involving post production detailing as well."

Apparently, the issue with the change in promos was something that brought that stand off out in the open. Shimit earlier directed the Nana Patekar-starrer Ab Tak Chappan.

Is Yash Raj banner's magic waning?

Big banner, big movies, big stars and big money were the intrinsic features of Yash Raj Films but the box office performance of their last two movies - Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - failed to attain big success.

Though both the films got good openings, thanks to the pre-release hype that projected them as box office sure things, the films couldn't sustain the success in the following weeks.

Out of the two, Jhoom... was the worst. Critics felt that gloss got precedence over story in the film. Directed by Shaad Ali, the film boasts of style but lacks a good story and strong script.

The young director's earlier films were dramatically rich, energetic and engrossing.

He made an impressive start with Saathiya, which had Rani Mukerji and Viveik Oberoi in key roles, in 2002. The film caught the attention of moviegoers and became a huge success. It also gave a new lease of life to Rani's career. Later, in 2005, the director once again conquered Bollywood with the blockbuster Bunty Aur Babli.

After delivering two back-to-back hits Ali became one of the most dependable directors in Bollywood and that's why the expectations were so high from his third film.Sadly, in Jhoom... Shaad Ali adopted the familiar premise that he used in Bunty Aur Babli and recycled the same tactics.

Sadly, in Jhoom... Ali adopted the familiar premise that he used in Bunty Aur Babli and recycled the same tactics. The repetition failed to add verve and vigour to the film as a result it didn't work.

While critics panned Jhoom... saying the film is all gloss and no substance, others criticised saying it is a contrived, half-witted offering.

The presence of heavy weights like Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol couldn't save it either.

However, the distributors have a different story to tell.

"If the film had been made by some other banner, it would have been declared a hit. Business wise the film has done well," said Sanjay Mehta a Delhi based distributor.

"But every time you can't expect them to produce super hits. Whenever Sachin Tendulkar is batting, people expect him to hit a century. But it is not possible. Same goes with the Chopras," added Mehta.

"The marketing strategy of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was fantastic and the first look of the film was excellent. But the story was bad and people didn't enjoy watching it," said Saurabh Varma, the vice president - programming & distribution of Inox Leisure Ltd.

On the other hand Ta Ra Rum Pum, another Yash Raj banner production, was an old wine in a new bottle. It was more commercially viable as compared to Jhoom... but not as good as last year's blockbuster Dhoom 2.

The major drawback of the movie, starring hit pair Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, was that it was too preachy and dull. Contrary to perky "Salaam Namaste", the first film Anand helmed, "Ta Ra..." was a disappointment.

"Yes, it didn't meet the Yash Raj standards mainly because the story was predictable and songs were not so catchy but 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' wasn't a flop. It did well at the ticket window," said Varma.Ta Ra Rum Pum was an old wine in a new bottle. It was more commercially viable as compared to Jhoom... but not as good as last year's blockbuster Dhoom 2.
Mehta feels that it is unfair to pass judgment on the Chopras for the recent flops because neither Yash nor Aditya Chopra directed the films.

"They just produced the films. So you can't blame them. Earlier they used to make romantic films and that too after a gap of two to three years. But now they are making too many films in a year so this kind of thing is bound to happen. Some will work, some won't. What's the big deal?" Mehta asked.

Both Mehta and Varma feels that the performance of these two films are not going to mar the Yash Raj banner's forthcoming releases - Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De India, director Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunir Mein Daag and Madhuri Dixit's comeback film Aaja Nach Le.

However, Mehta is a little apprehensive about Chak De India because sports form the premise of the film.

"Sports genre is not a very popular genre. The film is not a typical romantic film or a family drama. It is based on a hockey coach and hockey is not a popular sport in our country," said Mehta.

Directed by Shimit Amin of Ab Tak Chhappan fame, the film will release August 10. This is Shah Rukh's first release in 2007 hence all eyes are set on it.

Varma sounds confident. "Shah Rukh and Yash Raj combination is something to watch out for," he said.

Tell us something about the film Bhoothnath.

A: It is a film made especially for the family audience. In it, Amitabh Bachchan becomes the ghost friend of Shah Rukh Khan's son. The child actor is the one who was seen in the Rin advertisement with Bachhan. The last schedule of this film will start on July 16 and end on September 18. I cannot tell you more at this point of time.

SRK, Mani Ratnam at JAI JAGANNATH Premiere

Bollywood Trade News Network

In an attempt to introduce different genres of films to patrons, Cinemax associated with the much-awaited mythological movie JAI JAGANNATH in a big way! Cinemax not only hosted the premiere but also conducted the music launch for the film in 15 different languages for the very first time in history. All this was held in the magnificent foyer of Cinemax Versova. Making the event even grander were luminaries such as Shah Rukh Khan along with his wife Gauri, Mani Ratnam and Shankar attending the event.

To launch the movie's music in an extraordinary manner, Cinemax presented a beautifully organized skit with God's favourite "Naradmuni" as the host. For every new language, Naradmuni, famous for his wit and humour, invited a different celebrity guest present to release the melodious tunes.

Mr. Devang Sampat, Vice President, Marketing & Programming, CINEMAX, said, "Cinemax has hosted different genres of films till date but this is our first experience with a mythological film. India being a very religious country, mythological movies hold a very special place in the hearts of people. Another highlight of this event, which makes it unique and unusual, is that for the first time, in the history of events, a Music Launch is being hosted immediately to be followed by a Premiere! And of course, we are immensely pleased to welcome King Khan, Mani Ratnam along with Shankar at our property."

SRK is fine!

"I am all right — just a small scratch. Nothing at all," says Shah Rukh Khan when asked about the mishap he was involved in. As reported 'SRK injured in multiplex' (MiD DAY, July 13), Shah Rukh had a minor accident on Thursday night when the glass door at the Red Lounge in Cinemax, Andheri, gave way showering him with glass pieces.

The actor was at the music release and premiere of Chintu Mohapatra's Jai Jagannath along with Mani Ratnam.

We must add that SRK has lost oodles of weight and has grown his mane post his London trip. Is it for his tycoon character in Viveck Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya which he begins shooting shortly?

Director Shimit Amin clears the controversy surrounding his film Chak De! India

IN Repair Mode: Shah Rukh Khan and Shimit Amin
Shimit Amin's second film Chak De! India (for Yash Raj Films) has been mired in controversy. Here, Amin defends his project.

How did you come onboard YRF?
Aditya Chopra saw my first film Ab Tak Chappan and felt I was best suited to direct Chak De! India.

But after Ab Tak... you were supposed to do another film with Ram Gopal Varma.
We didn't have a fallout. I was supposed to direct a film for him but its concept could not be developed.

Will you work with him again?
Right now, I am under a three-film contract with YRF.

Was Salman Khan your first choice for Chak De!?
No. These are just rumours.

Neetu Chandra was the first considered for Vidya Malavade's role. What went wrong?
Neetu is a fine actress. We did audition her and she even did her hockey rehearsals, but somewhere we thought that… (pauses and does not finish the sentence). Actually, there are 15 girls in the film. We had to pick girls who were good actors and some who were good players. It was a long process to cast them.

People hooted at the promos of Chak De! before the screening of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
Firstly, it was just a theatrical music video and not a promo. I for one don't know how people reacted in the theatres. I think this is just loose talk.

You made another promo on SRK's suggestion?
No. That promo came as per our original strategy.

Did he storm off the sets thanks to many retakes?
SRK was absolutely cool about the retakes.

Is The Indian Hockey Federation upset about the subject?
Yet another fabricated story. I wish journalists were a little more ethical.

Don't you think controversies are generating negative publicity ?
I was too busy with post-production to react.

Bollywood heroes get funky
SRK in Don: The Chase Begins Again
One doesn't see Shah Rukh Khan mess with his hair too often. But for his role as the hard- to-nail Don, he opted for a disheveled fluff.

Both SRK's take on the 1978 Don and his hairdo met with mixed reactions. No worries, for

his floppy mane and gentle stubble looks seriously hot in the forthcoming Chak De India!

SRK bags Robot, Shankar's next
Shobha Warrier, july 30, 2007 15:06 IST, Rediff News / Movies
After directing the King of Tamil cinema, Rajnikanth , director Shankar is all set to direct the King of Bollywood. Yes, Shankar's next film is going to be in Hindi with none other than Shah Rukh Khan.
Directing Rajnikanth in Sivaji The Boss, and fulfilling the expectations of the superstar's fans was one of the toughest assignments for Shankar, and he has come out successfully.

Even when his films broke one box office record after another, Shankar carried with him a dream, a dream to make a science fiction. But that had to be a magnum opus and could not be done in a regional language, even though a Tamil film like Sivaji grossed crores of rupees at the box office.

After reports of Kamal Haasan and then Hrithik Roshan leading the cast of Shankar's science fiction, Robot, it is Shah Rukh Khan who has now bagged the role. Incidentally, Robot will be produced by SRK himself, under his Red Chillies Entertainment banner.

From his very first film Gentleman to Sivaji, Shankar has shown his obsession with one story idea -- a lone man fighting the corrupt system. In one way or the other, corruption and other ills of society form the crux of all his films.

Will Robot also fight the corrupt system? Time will tell.
