Mumbai, Oct 23 (IANS) In the middle of a half-finished apartment block, Antara Mali and Abhishek Bachchan are dancing to director Ram Gopal Varma's tunes while a white cat languorously looks on.
Varma's new directorial venture "Naach" is being shot in the building. A barely-painted room serves as Antara Mali's residence. She plays an aspiring artiste struggling in showbiz. The decor for her pad is impressively austere.
But the real star on the set is the white cat serving as part of Antara's background trappings. It lounges lazily before the actress, refusing to do anything. "He's a lazy actor," quips Abhishek from the background.
Varma isn't amused. He orders the feline's presence out of the frame. "No cat," he instructs writer Kiran Reddy from the monitor.
Reddy who came to Varma with the concept and vision of "Naach" seems to have inspired him. "When I heard him narrate the subject I was completely taken in. I wanted to be part of the endeavour, but not in a way that would leave Kiran out. So you could say Kiran and I are co-directing the film," Varma explained.
But there's no ambiguity about who calls the shots on the sets of "Naach".
Varma peers into the monitor and asks Antara to just "react" to the music. She does so and turns to Abhishek who's standing at the window. He smiles and nods, his eyes giving nothing, and yet everything, away.
"Abhishek is superb, simply superb," exults Varma. Later he displays a series of pictures of Abhishek shot by Praveen, the same multifaceted gentleman who designed Varma's swanky new office, called "The Factory".
"Wow!" says Abhishek, "dad loved the picture. He asked Ramu for some. Of course Ramu said yes. No one says no to dad."
Young Anil Mohile's jazz music is amazingly vibrant. Reveals Varma: "The film will probably have 12-13 songs. From the song-less 'Bhoot' to this... I like to surprise people."
Surprises there're galore in "Naach". The choreographer is a non-resident Indian Marathi girl. A completely fresh Varma-recruit from the U.S. who's doing "Naach" for a lark.
"Actually I'm here to explore acting possibilities," she tells IANS shyly. "But when this opportunity came my way I couldn't say no."
Back to the set...
A cupboard, a few knick knacks, a mattress on the floor, and that's it. Antara is plonked on the mattress while a haunting jazz tune plays on.
Abhishek stands behind her near the window watching in rapt attention as she reacts to the music. In a strangely subverted way the moment is reminiscent of Waheeda Rehman's trance-like snake dance in Vijay Anand's "Guide" as Dev Anand watched in open-mouthed amazement.
But Antara is far removed from Waheeda. Warm and informal, she plonks herself on a chair puts her legs up and talks animatedly about her disappointments and hopes.
"I really thought 'Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon' would get a bigger audience. But the good part of it is that it still got noticed by a lot of people. Anyone who saw it liked it. I'm encouraged to do the kind of roles I believe in. And as long as I get to do the roles I believe in I'm happy with my career," she grins her wide grin and goes back for her shot.
It's pack up time. Abhishek rushes off as he chats on the cell phone. Varma gambols down the steps. "I think Abhishek is just starting out," says the star maker.
