Abhishek Bachchan Biography
Some would say Abhishek Bachchan was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. But Abhi would disagree. Despite coming from an elite family of superstars, Abhishek Bachchan did not get fame on a platter. He had to struggle tooth and nail to become one of the most promising actors in Bollywood.

Abhishek Bachchan was born on 5th February 1976. The scion of the talented Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan , Abhishek has acting in his genes.

Abhishek knew it from the very beginning that he has to make it big in cinema just like his father and mother. That's why before completing his business degree in Boston University, he chose to come back to India and start his career in movies.

He made his acting debut in the year 2000 with J.P Dutta's Refugee which was a great launch pad for him. But the film didn't turn out to be a box-office success. Abhishek kept on signing new projects, but none of them proved to be a big hit.

After a string of flops, Abhi was dubbed a "dark horse" by his detractors.

Even on the personal front, Abhishek's luck didn't favour him. His engagement with well-known Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor broke in 2002.

Success knocked on Abhi's door with Mani Ratnam's Yuva in 2004, for which he got best supporting actor award. Since then, there has been no looking back for him. He has proved himself as a bankable actor.

Right now, Abhishek is working in many projects like 'Delhi 6', 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom', 'Drona', 'Shootout at Lokhandwala', 'Sarkar 2' and 'Guru'.

Not only is he one of the sought-after stars in Bollywood, Abhishek has also been named as Asia's Sexiest Male of year 2006 by a British tabloid. The most eligible bachelor of Bollywood, Abhishek Bachchan is today living up to the credentials of the distinguished Bachchan family.

Vicky Singh's directorial debut Raaste seems to have gotten off to a bumpy start. The film's first schedule in June has been postponed to October-November this year.

It is learnt that this is being done at the request of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, who star in the film together. They have cited personal reasons for the shoot to be deferred to a later date.

Sunil Shetty's Popkorn and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Films jointly produce Raaste. Besides Abhishek and Aishwarya, the cast also includes John Abraham and Sikander Kher.

Race tactics

When asked about the deferred shoot, Ramesh Sippy of Balaji Telefilms, says, "Certain cast members cited unavailability in June, so we have now postponed it to October-November. The June schedule was supposed to be a short schedule in any case, so it's alright."

Raaste was launched in December 2006 at the GIFA Awards in Malaysia. A specially made promo was screened to drive home the point that the project was a road film with lots of cars and bikes. John plays a biker while Abhishek is to be a racing enthusiast.

"We were supposed to have an outdoor shoot schedule in Mexico during the racing season there, but there's a racing event in October-November as well, so we will shoot then," points out Sippy.

It is learnt that major chunks of Raaste will be shot abroad. Besides Mexico, it will also be filmed in Turkey.

No skin show

Besides the delayed first schedule, another buzz doing the rounds refers to Aishwarya Rai. Apparently, the actress expressed reservations about her styling in the film. Post Dhoom:2, she does not to seem keen to sport a dare-bare look in Raaste again.

When asked about this, Sippy pooh-poohs any such reservations. "That's not true; I have not heard any such thing from Ash."Incidentally, Vicky Sigh has earlier assisted Farhan Akhtar.

Goldie Behl's Abhishek Bachchan starrer Drona looking for water in Rajasthan…

The movie that will introduce Abhishek as another Bollywood Superhero is deep into controversies. Goldie Behl's Drona starring Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role ran into trouble when they unknowingly moved closer to the Pakistan border.

The film unit was camping in Rajasthan's Bikaner town to shoot in the village of Sujrada. But they crossed the village and entered Agneyu, which is about 170 km from Pakistan and were then warned by the district magistrate.

But the Bikaner district administration clarified that the film unit had taken official permission for the shoot and that there was no distinguishing border between the two villages. "The film unit has filed a reply and we are satisfied with it," the official added. The film had just faced a thunderstorm and Animal Welfare Board of India's wrath for the death of a horse on the sets.

Guru - Strictly okay.

I watched Guru this weekend. It is not really a good movie.

Abhishek Bachchan is strictly okay. The climax is disappointing. There is absolutely no logic. He shouts and shouts and expects the audience to show sympathy to the character. The first scene where he smiles is really artificial and he's trying hard to act and it shows.

But Mithun Chakraborty was good as the press owner and Madhavan and Vidya Balan have played support roles.

As for Mani Ratnam:The overall dialog rendering was weak. It is a product from an old school of film-direction.I think he makes Tamil movies MUCH better than his Hindi ones.

Aishwarya Rai was good in a few scenes, as an actress.

However, it seems there are interesting parallels in real/reel life.

Abhishek Bachchan -> Dhirubhai Ambani
Aishwarya Rai -> Dhirubhai Ambani's wife
Mithun Chakraborty -> Ramnath Goenka
The Contractor Businessmen -> Nusli Wadia
Madhavan -> Arun Shourie

Amar Singh, general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, has threatened to file a suit against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf for spreading rumours that he purchased a Bentley car worth Rs 2.5 crore as a birthday gift to Abhishek Bachchan.

He also threatened to file suits against television channels if they did not refrain from giving out false information.

Singh fumed throughout the press conference, which he had called at short notice, to explain his stance.

Haroon Yusuf had charged Singh of giving a false address while purchasing the car -- Singh had provided Amitabh Bachchan's address.

"I made the payment by cheque and have quoted the PAN number while making the payment. The car was purchased five days ago and flown to Delhi from London. I paid Rs 30 lakh to the Maharashtra government. If this does not figure in my income tax, then you can complain. You could complain if Amitabh Bachchan says that he does not live at the address I gave. Yuu have to decide who has more credibility: Amitabh or Haroon," he said.

He disclosed that his advocates are already looking at the legal options to file cases against Yusuf and television channels. He added that unless the government makes purchasing of the car a criminal offence, he would keep buying vehicles.

He was particularly severe on the media as he felt that majority of his problems emanated from the media stories about him and his proximity to the Bachchan family.

"Sometimes, you run a story that the car was a gift from father to son. Then, you say it was gifted by me. It is my car. My son Abhishek and bahu Ashwariya Rai can use the vehicle when I am not using it or when I'm not in Mumbai. Then you run stories about Ash being married to a peepal tree to take care of Mangal. Let me tell you Amitabh Bachchan does not believe in these things. Please leave us alone," he pleaded.

Video: Amitabh's new gaddi

February 07, 2007 18:38 IST

Two days after Abhishek Bachchan got a brand new Bentley from dad Amitabh Bachchan on his birthday, the Big B got a sparking silver Rolls Royce, gifted to him by his Eklavya director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Chopra, along with his mother, presented the car to Amitabh as a token of appreciation for his work in Eklavya. According to Chopra, this is Amitabh's best performance till date.

Apparently, throughout the shooting of Eklavya, Amitabh insisted on giving Chopra a car because the director claimed to still travel in autorickshaws.

But Chopra decided to gift Amitabh a car before the actor could.

The Big B plays a royal guard in this multi-starrer featuring Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergil and Raima Sen.

This is an exclusive video featuring Amitabh, Chopra and his mother.

Aish Marries Tree(s)--A Setback for Feminism?ReligionAishwarya Rai, who has been in the news lately because of her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan, has apparently been ritually married to not one but two trees before her real marriage (thanks, Antahkarana). The aim is to counter the astrological effects of being born a Manglik:

But Ash is reportedly blighted with what in astrological terms is described as manglik dosh, which means that the planet Mars (mangla) and possibly even the planet Saturn are in the seventh house. People with manglik dosh are prone to multiple marriages, according to San Francisco Bay Area Vedic astrologer Pandit Parashar. That means Ashs marriage to Abhishek could either end in divorce or his death.

In Hindu tradition, in order to offset the evil influence of manglik dosh, a woman should marry a peepal or banana tree before she ties the knot with her fianc. Or she could even marry a clay urn, which should be broken soon after the nuptial ceremonies, signifying that the bride has become a widow, and the manglik dosh problem has been solved.

Its not known if Ash has married, or plans to marry, an urn, but she reportedly has married a peepal tree in the holy city of Varanasi, and a banana tree in the southern Indian city of Bangalore. (link)
The Indian media is reporting that a case has been filed against the Bachchan family by lawyer Shruti Singh to the effect that these types of practices promote untouchability. She has also suggested that it's offensive to women.

There has been some discussion of this event on the blog Feministing, and one commenter there points out that the practice of marrying a tree can also be recommended for men, though I haven't been able to confirm that. (If true, that would definitely weaken the case that this is a misogynistic ritual.) Other commenters have suggested that this is probably pretty harmless in the big scheme of things — especially since honor killings, dowry killings, child marriages, and forced marriages are still problems in Indian society.

What do readers think? Is this "backward" practice part of a slippery slope (only one step away from things that are much more problematic), or something basically harmless? What do you think of Shruti Singh's claim that this practice promotes untouchability? I must admit I don't know very much about Hindu astrology, and so can't say what role caste plays in these practices in general.

Is Moto the phone for you?

February 6, 2007

Paris Hilton has hers in hot pink; Abhishek Bachchan prefers his in gold. In case you are wondering, We are talking about the Motorola range of cell phones flooding the market.
Since its entry into the Indian market in 1987, Motorola, the number two phone maker in the world, has come a long way. With new, eye-catching models every now and then, Motorola has been giving Nokia, the number one phone maker, a run for its money. Tie-ups with telecom giants like Bharti would only extend its customer base.

But are these phones the one for you? Here's the rundown on some of the popular models and their pros and cons.

C-115 and C-117

There are Motorola's offerings to the Rs 2,000 segment. Being bundled with prepaid connections from Airtel and BSNL and with a starting price of Rs 1,500, these phones make up for almost 35 per cent of the Motorola handset sales in India.

Cons: Apart from providing the minimal functions, these handsets have nothing much to boast about.
