Bollywood's Bachchan, Rai wed in Hindu ceremony
By Krittivas Mukherjee
Fri Apr 20, 11:05 AM ET

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, one of Bollywood's best-known screen couples, married on Friday in a traditional Hindu wedding in which the groom rode a white horse before the pair took their vows around a sacred fire.

The ceremonies concluded three days of celebrations at the actors' homes in India's entertainment capital of Mumbai, creating, what industry pundits said is, Bollywood's ultimate power couple.

Rai, 33, is a former Miss World and Bachchan, 31, belongs to Indian film royalty, being the son of Amitabh Bachchan, the country's best-known actor who has a huge fan following around the world.

Bachchan, wearing a white "bandhgala" or a long Indian tunic, a silver-colored turban and a veil of flowers on his face, rode a white horse as part of a custom and waved to hundreds of fans gathered outside his house.

The groom's party then moved to another Bachchan residence nearby where the marriage was solemnized by priests who chanted hymns from ancient Indian scriptures amid the blowing of conch shells and ululation, sources involved with the wedding said.

The celebrations have transfixed Bollywood and sent India's celebrity-obsessed media into a frenzy even though the Bachchans have tried to keep the event strictly private and low-key because the groom's grandmother is ill.

But fans did not leave the couple -- dubbed as "Abhiash" by the Indian media which likens them to the Hollywood celebrity duo of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie -- alone as hundreds of them lined the roads leading to the marriage venue.

Police briefly used batons to push back over-enthusiastic fans.

"LOVER" SLASHES WRIST

Many fans slept on the pavement outside Bachchan's house to catch a glimpse of the stars.

"I don't have an invitation but I have come to bless the couple," said Keshav Srivastav, a look-alike of Bachchan senior who drew cheers from the amused crowd.

Earlier, the celebrations were marked by drama after an Indian woman claiming to be Bachchan's lover slashed her wrist in front of his home.

She told reporters she wanted to kill herself because Bachchan had gone back on his promise of marrying her after having "physical relations" with her. Police arrested the woman -- described as a struggling fashion model -- for attempting suicide, a punishable offence.

Police refused to register a complaint against Bachchan, saying the model had no proof of the relationship and it looked like a publicity stunt.

Rai and Bachchan have worked together in at least five films, and both have been romantically linked in the past to other Bollywood stars.

Rai, who has acted in over 40 films, was crowned Miss World in 1994. Bachchan too has notched up about 40 movies.

The honeymoon begins
Ram Kamal Mukherjee
[22 Apr, 2007 l 2056 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]
The wedding of the season has finally been solemnised but the curiosity continues unabated.

The wedding of the season has finally been solemnised but the curiosity continues unabated. The latest update is that Abhiash will be leaving for their honeymoon on April 25 for a week. The grapevine has it that they might go to Europe.

Meanwhile, a guest at the wedding ceremony at Prateeksha reveals, "Nearly 200 members from Aishwarya's family stood at the entrance of Prateeksha with folded hands to welcome us. Although Ash's parents maintained an extremely low profile through the wedding, they made sure that all the baraatis were treated well."

The ceremony was mainly performed according to Tulu traditions and customs. "Ash looked extremely pretty in a pink banarasi sari (although Abu-Sandeep had re-worked it). Neeta Lulla had designed the costumes for the rest of her family.

The interior was tastefully done. "A white silk drape covered the life-size mirror and golden frames all over the mandap," says our source. The Rais had insisted that the wedding should follow their customs.

"The Rais wanted Abhishek to wear a dhoti and sport a bare torso, like any South Indian groom, but Amitabh insisted that Abhishek follow their family tradition and dress in sherwani and sehra," says our source.

Karan Johar was the anchor of the wedding ceremony. "Karan was seen doing everything, from helping Ash manage her sari to helping Jaya Bachchan get whatever the priests demanded for the havan. The Rais had flown in some priests from Mangalore, who chanted Vishnu shlokas through the wedding.

Ash was also seen holding the sindoor box, a typical Bengali custom. That was a special request from Jaya for her daughter-in-law. Finally, they had the pheras and exchanged garlands, followed by the Satyanarayan katha. The wedding wound up around 10 pm."
After the kanyadaan ritual, Ash became slightly emotional and looked tearfully at mum Vrinda Rai, who was crying. "It was a homely event. They had Indian, Italian and Continental cuisine for the guests," adds our source.

Abhishek weds Aishwarya...finally

Colour, confusion and crowds... It was every bit the grand filmy wedding as Abhishek Bachchan, astride a horse, wearing an off-white sherwani and a white turban bedecked with flowers, arrived on a hot Friday evening to wed Aishwarya Rai.

Bollywood's power couple finally tied the knot in a grand ceremony that held much of the nation in thrall - never mind if the only details of the closely guarded event that filtered out were grainy zoom shots from TV cameras stationed across the road.

Aishwarya reached the Bachchans' Juhu residence Prateeksha in a silver Mercedes decorated with flowers along with her mother and brother.

At almost the same time, the barat left the other Bachchan bungalow Jalsa nearby, with a visibly anxious Amitabh Bachchan, complete with a saffron turban, ushering his guests into the waiting Volvo buses that would take them to the wedding venue.

His face covered with a sehra of white flowers, Abhishek did a small jig before getting off the bus and waving cheerily and then getting on to his horse again at Prateeksha.

While photographers scrambled to train their cameras at the goings-on, curious stargazers climbed up trees, railings and even hoardings to get a first-hand view.

Amid the sea of saffron turbans sported by the baratis, several close friends like yesteryear actor Danny Denzongpa, industrialist Anil Ambani and director Goldie Behl could be seen.

The Bollywood celebrities who arrived to bless the couple also included Sonali Bendre, Preity Zinta, Karan Johar, Ajay Devgan and Kajol.

With so many high-profile guests, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, at least 1,000 security personnel swarmed both the flower bedecked Bachchan homes. The road outside Prateeksha was blocked.

Friday's wedding was the climax of three-day festivities that included a sangeet and a mehndi ceremony that were equally secretive.

The buzz around the Abhi-Ash marriage started last year and had been steadily getting louder even though the Bachchans never announced it officially because they wanted to keep it a private affair.

TV shots and newspaper pictures of guests, who kept floating in and out of their house from Wednesday, were the only proof that the big fat Indian wedding was finally taking place.

Both the Bachchan residences were turned into fortresses and for the uninvited, getting in was next to impossible.

The Bachchans not only took care of their own privacy, they were thoughtful enough not to disturb their neighbours - the lawns at the venue were covered with soundproofed, air-conditioned tents.

Members of the film fraternity who made it to the guest list showed cooperation towards the first family of Bollywood - none of the invitees breathed out a single detail about the wedding.

"They have invited all those people who are emotionally close to them," Amar Singh said in an interview to a TV channel in an apparent explanation for some conspicuous absentees like neighbour Hrithik Roshan and all the Khans.

Fans and mediapersons who had logged on to Aishwarya's official site also faced disappointment as they found it temporarily closed.

"This site is temporarily unavailable. Please do not call or e-mail but check back again next month. Thank you," said a message apparently posted by Aishwarya.

Whether the wedding of the year was accessible to all or not, the couple's many fans just hope that they live happily ever after...

I read this in an article and thought it summed their relationship up perfectly, ''It is a marriage of convenience for preserving and showcasing fame, glamour, money and Bollywood power''

I doubt that the 'love' will last but the marriage for namesake most probably will. But i'm most relieved that its finally done and over with so that people can go back to worrying about the real problems in the world.
