Carol Gracias' trade secrets

Sita Menon | July 18, 2003 17:22 IST

Carol Marie Gracias, who is very popular on the ramp, is known for her poise and her professionalism. The dusky Carol loves modelling; her only crib is against the Indian penchant for those with fair skins.

What she is wearing: A loose, asymmetrical, brown and black striped tunic that stops shy of the waistband of her short blue denim skirt.

She likes wearing: Trousers, long skirts. "This is the first time in a week I'm wearing something so short," she says.

Her beauty regimen: She uses Medimix or Margo soap to wash her face every day ("I've been through so many face washes it isn't even funny"), drinks lots of water and sticks to minimal makeup when not working ("I believe the skin should be allowed to breathe").

Her bag will always contain: A moisturizer; an Elizabeth Arden all-purpose cream; a pen; paper, her wallet and her cell phone, which she cannot live without.

After IFW: "I think I'm going to need another vacation [she is just back from a vacation to London and Rome] to recuperate. But I have shows lined up. It would be good to have some time to myself, to do some shopping. I guess a little pampering should do it."

She likes wearing: Hemant Trevedi ("He made three outfits for me, one of which I've worn once and will never wear it again because it's so beautiful"), Wendell Rodricks and Rajesh Pratap Singh.

Her schedule: "Is shattering, really. It's been a week of working from 8 am to 9pm and we're almost ready to bite each others' heads off."

Why she always looks fresh at her shoots despite gruelling schedules: "Makeup my dear, makeup. Haven't you heard about the wonders of makeup?"

Name : Carol Maria Gracias
Height : 5' 9"
Waist : 23"
Date of Birth : 28 December
Zodiac Sign : Capricorn
Titles won : Femina Look of the Year 1998

Her husky-honey voice is a surprise coming from her gamine visage. A closer look reveals twinkling warm cognac eyes.

Carol was the star in superhit pop song "Oh Carol" by Stereo Nation. This is also one of my favourite songs.

The highlight of her young life has been winning the Look of the Year contest for which she was very focussed indeed and the fact that she didn't even place for the international contest held in Nice in September didn't faze her one bit.

"Look, I did my best. I prepared intensively, worked out, ate the right things, watched my diet strictly, was very motivated. Then I go to Nice and find the contest dominated by 14 and 15-year-olds who have been modeling for some time already and are even more frighteningly focussed than I was. The winner was a 15-year-old Rumanian girl who was perfect to look at and even thinner than me. My roommate was 14, an American girl, who knew exactly where she was going and what she wanted to do with her life. So…'' she laughs, eyes crinkling up, enjoying herself hugely inspite of everything.

Has being the sub-continental Look of the Year changed her life in any way? "Not as much as people tend to think," says the young lady drily. "For one thing, people aren't exactly falling over themselves to sign me up for television or print. I'm too dark, most of them feel. I talked to Noyonika (Chatterjee) about it and she said 'Talk about it to people, to everyone'.

" The family is small and close (one brother), her extended family is also very much around, college is high on her list of priorities and she knows modelling can't last forever. She's smart enough to say that if she had to choose between a high-profile fashion show and her final exams in March/April 1999, she'd pick the latter because she doesn't want to lose a year. First the degree, then possibly an MA and then, who knows, a PhD in child psychology. Because that is what she'd like to do, work with children, not in the Misses World way but permanently. She likes them, she likes the subject and while confessing to being a pretty average student, she has that extra edge now that winning a major looking-good contest gives young women nowadays. She could go anywhere, do anything, and she knows it.

She calls herself fun, predictable, crazy and naive! Loves children, her friends, food and music.

Not now, Darling!

Is Bobby Darling already thinking of leaving the Bigg Boss house? We heard Rakhi Sawant and Kashmira Shah are giving her a tough time...

Subhash K Jha

There's action aplenty on reality show Bigg Boss that commenced last week. The contestants have begun to forge friendships, and found foes too. Apparently, Bobby Darling has been the butt of maximum snide remarks and may soon crumble under pressure.

Although she desperately needs the money, Bobby Darling will probably not be able to accumulate it on Sony's Bigg Boss to pay for her sex-change operation. According to a source, Deepak Parasher's constant taunts and Kashmira Shah-Rakhi Sawant's incessant barbs are getting to Bobby. "Bobby has already broken down twice. She doesn't want to leave. But she's being given no choice," says the source.

Kashmira-Rakhi have become buddies at Bigg Boss. They've apparently made a pact to not vote each other out. Rakhi incidentally, slaps on the warpaint the minute she wakes up, even before brushing her teeth. The third female contestant (fourth, if we count Bobby) Anupama Varma keeps to herself. She's in mourning over the death of her pet dog. Kashmira Shah too lost her pet dog recently. The two ladies are bonded by canine commiseration.

Aryan Vaid is trying hard to hit on the women. Having made no headway with the frosty Anupama Verma, Vaid has now shifted his attentions to the Tamil actress Ragini who's frantically trying to brush up on her Hindi. Maybe Aryan can give her Hindi lessons? A Sony source suggests there might be more intimacy between Vaid and his female friends than family audiences permit. "If so, we'll black it out. Under no circumstance will we show sex on Bigg Boss," says our source.

Vaid seems to be cornering all the female attention (not surprising considering the other men on the show are Deepak Parasher, Salil Ankola, Ravi Kishen). When he gets into the swimming pool on Monday evening's episode everyone follows 'suit'-Rupa Ganguly literally so, since she coyly plunges into the pool in her track suit.

Vaid has a litany of food complaints. But his dietician is strict about what he can and cannot have. Much as Vaid wants brown bread and protein shake he won't be allowed to have them here.

The fifth woman on Bigg Boss, Carol Gracias, is trying to learn Hindi too. She's unhappy about missing out on Christmas with her family because of her commitment to Bigg Boss.

The first romance on Bigg Boss has already started. Rakhi Sawant has fallen in love with the Big Boss' voice. "It reminds me of RJ Anurag Pandey's voice." Besides panting after the Boss's baritone, Sawant has also been teaching Rupa Ganguly how to roll out perfectly round rotis.

In tomorrow's episode, 'Big Boss' is will ask the contestants to light a bonfire and keep it going until Wednesday. Unfortunately, it starts raining soon after. "This must be artificial rain," pipes in one of the contestants.

Bigg Brother's tantrums

Sony's new reality show Bigg Boss has barely taken off, and already there are starry tantrums. Item girls Rakhi Sawant and Kashmera Shah, who share warm vibes on camera, have decided not to vote each other out.

Bobby Darling has a major problem with Deepak Parasher (Ha ha! Could it be anyone else?), and feels Deepak is giving him a tough time. That's prompted Bobby to seek redressal in the grievance room. Aryan Vaid has become the resident flirt and was soaking in the pool when all the girls joined him in in their teeny-weeny swim wear. But Rupali Ganguly stuck to her t-shirt and track pants (even in the pool!).

South actress Ragini seems to be making Bigg Brother her ticket to Bollywood, what with the way she's been sharing vibes with all the other male participants. What's next, we wonder?

Cleavage Show on National Television
<>document.write('Faridoon Shahryar, ') Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Monday, November 06, 2006]

Reality TV has taken a big leap forward in the Indian household with Rakhi Sawant and Kashmira Shah displaying ample cleavage. And with the face-of-wardrobe-malfunction Carol Gracias in the house, the peeping toms must be holding their breath. Well, Sony TV's 'Bigg Boss' made a debut last Friday and it promises to be a voyeur's delight and the moral police is already voicing their displeasure. So, let's check out what it's all about.

'Bigg Boss' is the Indian version of 'Big Brother' which has created waves in many countries including Australia and UK. A bunch of celebrities are confined to a house where they have to live for a period of time with no contact with the outside world. There have been sexual escapades (An attempted rape took place once) and one contestant even attempted suicide. Now, in this desi version, the host is the tapori-turned-suave Arshad Warsi while the thirteen celebrities are losers or wannabes including Rakhi Sawant, Kashmira Shah, Aryan Vaid, Deepak Parashar, Bobby Darling, Ravi Kishen, Salil Ankola etc.

The contestants had to undergo HIV test prior to the beginning of the show (A few of the contestants had objection to that) and apparently they are being paid a huge amount as well. The SMS voting is done by the public. And the contestant who gets the highest point shall be voted out every week. Many are betting that the loud mouthed Rakhi Sawant will be the first to be voted out. I don't think that will be the case. For with her designer (And revealing) clothes being a voyeur's delight, I think people won't mind her motor-mouth-mechanics.

So, get ready for the reality television taking you to a new hemisphere. For the 'Bigg Boss' is determined to make head turns…And the moral police shall surely keep it in news.

Bobby Darling likely to be eliminated on Bigg Boss

Subhash K. Jha (Indo-Asian News Service)

Mumbai, November 6, 2006

Though she desperately needs the money, actress Bobby Darling will probably not be able to get the huge prize money on Sony's recently launched show Bigg Boss to pay for her sex change operation.

The show, which went on air Friday, is a unique combination of reality and real drama with 13 celebrities vying to win the prize.

According to a source, actor Deepak Parashar's constant taunts and item girls Kashmira Shah and Rakhi Sawant's incessant barbs are irritating Bobby.

"Bobby has already broken down twice. She doesn't want to leave. But she's being given no choice," a source told IANS.

Kashmira and Rakhi have become buddies at Bigg Boss. They've apparently made a pact to not vote each other out. Rakhi incidentally slaps on the war paint the minute she wakes up, even before brushing her teeth.

Model-turned-actress Anupama Varma, the third female contestant (fourth, if we count Bobby), keeps to herself. She's in mourning about the passing of her pet dog. Kashmira, too, lost her pet dog recently. The two ladies are bonded by canine commiseration.

Actor Aryan Vaid is trying hard to hit on the females. Having made no headway with the frosty Anupama, Vaid has now shifted his attention to the Tamil actress Ragini, who is frantically trying to brush up her Hindi.

Maybe Aryan can give her Hindi lessons?

A Sony source suggested there might be more intimacy between Aryan and his female friends than family audiences permit.

"If so, we'll black it out. Under no circumstance will we show sex on Bigg Boss," said the source.

TV actor Amit Sadh has no time for female diversions. He's constantly moping over his girlfriend Neeru's picture. In fact, Neeru's sister from Canada came to say goodbye to Amit on the Bigg Boss set.

Coming back to Aryan, he seems to be cornering all the female attention -- not surprising considering the other men on the show are Deepak, cricketer-turned-actor Salil Ankola and Bhojpuri films' superstar Ravi Kishan.

When Aryan gets into the swimming pool on Monday evening's episode everyone follows 'suit' - Rupa Ganguly, another TV artist who is also a part of the "Bigg Boss" team, literally so, since she coyly plunges into the pool in her track suit.

Aryan has a litany of food complaints. But his dietician is strict about what he can and cannot have. Much as Aryan wants brown bread and protein shake he won't be allowed to have them.

The fifth female on Bigg Boss, model Carol Gracias, is desperately trying to learn Hindi. She is terribly unhappy about missing out on Christmas with her family because of her commitment to Bigg Boss.

"This must be artificial rain," piped in one of the contestants.

"I am very scared of the Bigg Boss.."

The wait for the baap of all reality shows The Bigg Boss is soon to end with the show going on air today. Though it's speculated that many big names were approached to participate in this show, only a select few braved to give up their cozy lifestyle to be trapped in a mansion with strangers! Imagine being constantly spied by cameras, being starved of all sorts of entertainment and eventually throwing your life open in front of the telly audience.

One such sporting contestant of this hungama packed reality show is Rupali Ganguly aka Monisha of Sarabhai VS Sarabhai fame. This vivacious and loquacious actor took up this show as a challenge, as she puts it in her own words, "The concept sounded very strange initially, so I refused it point black. But later I thought of not missing out on such an opportunity!"

Here's a candid and exclusive chat with a rather scared and apprehensive Rupali who is busy packing her bags ready to head off to Karjat, where the contestants will be secluded and cloistered for three whole months!

"My first reaction was: are you crazy"

The buzz is that only losers have taken on Bigg Boss….What's your take?

I am very hurt by some news reports which have called me a loser. I have not taken up the show because I have nothing else to do, but because I want to do something different. In fact, not many know but I was also offered Zee's Sindoor Tere Naam Ka. The role was on the lines of Tabu in Viraasat. I am not sure if it was the lead role, but it was definitely a very promising character.

So you chose Bigg Boss over Sindoor?
Ya. I have these weird mood swings in life, you know. And there's nothing really exciting happening. Something which makes me get up in the morning, put on my makeup and make me commit myself for a 12 hour shift. So, one fine day I just decided that I wanted do this, so I can tell my grandchildren that I did something like this.

Ok, let's be honest. You must have been apprehensive initially?
Yes, of course. I got a call from the channel about three months ago. My first reaction was… are you crazy. Because the concept of being cut off from the world, with no communication whatsoever sounded a rather eerie. So, initially I said no to them.

Then what made you change your mind?
I don't have a boyfriend, so obviously its not that I would be pining to speak to someone throughout the day. But I am a totally family person and my dad doesn't keep too well. So, I need to speak to him everyday, my mother and my dogs. I have seven of them. I had requested the channel if I could make at least one call to my dad, they said no. It seems they will pass on all the messages to us.

"I don't have a boyfriend; I won't be pining to talk to someone throughout the day"

Why did you finally say yes?
I called up J D Majethia who means a lot to me and asked him for advice. To tell you frankly, I was a bit scared of revealing my true self to viewers. And what if it backfires on me in the future. But somehow, JD has assured me that he will give me work, no matter what.

Even now you sound very scared and hesitant. Why so? Aren't you still convinced about the show?
You're right. I am still scared because we have been told nothing at all about the show. I just know that I am going to be with a few other participants in a room. Our reactions will be monitored, but then we don't get to know the audiences' reactions. No hairdresser, no make up. I am really sacred of being watched by the entire nation sans makeup. I think I'll look very bad.

Which thought scares you the most right now?
I've never ever lived away from my family, or lived on my own, not even in a hostel. I am going to miss my own room, my parents, my pillows and my dogs..

So how much money are you being paid for the show?
I cannot reveal the exact amount, but it's definitely something that I earn over a period of twelve months.

Will you evolve as a person because of Bigg Boss?
My mother feels I need to be disciplined as a person. I don't get up early in the morning, don't exercise and just keep throwing things around in the house. My three month long stay in Karjat will hopefully help me evolve as a person.

"I was a bit scared of revealing my true self to viewers"

You mean to say, you don't know much about what's going to be happening there. But you are just going off to Karjat?
I have no clue who the other contestants are. I just know that we're going to be put up at Karjat, there's a gym and a swimming pool. But, of course, you will never see me in a swimsuit. The only saving grace is that cameras will not follow us in the bathroom.

So what happens to your role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki.. for three months?
In any case, I don't get too much footage on the show. There are 37 actors and at the end of it its Sakshi's story, with her family and husband. Also, there are a number of established actors and characters on the show. Though, I would say Balaji is one of the best production houses that one can work with. And, of course, JD and Aatish' production house Hats Off is family for me.

So, why don't you ask Ekta for a role?
I have never ever been a PR person, so I have never really gone around asking for roles from producers. And in any case, Ekta is too intelligent a person who can spot talent and characters. So, if she has a role, she will definitely offer me one.

The rising at Bigg Boss

Bigg Boss contestants Anupama Verma and Bobby Darling prepare breakfast on the sets

Reena Thapar Kapoor

It has been only a week and the contestants of Bigg Boss on Sony have already started revolting against the system. As per the rules of the show the contestants are expected to get up at a particular time and then follow a regimented lifestyle with every move of theirs monitored and observed. But, in today's episode all the contestants have revolted against the existing format. When the 8 am alarm goes off, the contestants refuse to get up from their bed.

This was a pre planned move on their part since none of them are used to starting their day early. They decided on the previous night to sleep it off and not allow Bigg Boss to rule their lives. So, they chose to ignore the alarm. But Deepak Parasher was the exception to the rule and decided to get up. "He kept telling the others that the store room was open for an hour and they should go get some food or else they would starve for the rest of the day. But no one took heed of what he had to say. Finally, Parasher ran to the store room and stocked food for himself and the other contestants," said our source.

Apparently, the idea to ignore the alarm was to protest against Big Boss. "They are irritated by the strict life in that house. Following a timetable is asking too much from them and they are feeling like slaves. It's their irritation that triggers off the verbal war between them."

Bigg, fat gossip sessions

Bigg Boss contestants bitch out Ekta Kapoor's soaps. Wonder if ex-Balaji man Sandiip Sikcand has anything to say

Subhash K Jha

Over-the-top: Urvashi Dholakia

Participants bitching about the K-serials

As the contestants holed up in the Karjat house for Bigg Boss get cozy and comfortable with each other, the conversation gets more and more uninhibited and candid. On Monday night viewers and rival channels were surprised to hear pointed references and barbs aimed at small-screen bahus in long-running soaps, who're scandalously dressed and have their pallus hanging down way beyond the positions of decorum. The references to Ekta Kapoor's serials were quite obvious with special mention of Urvashi Dholakia and her outrageous dress code as a bahu. In fact a channel source from Sony reveals, "They did refer to Ekta's serials. We beeped out all references made to her. It didn't seem proper."

Ekta, on her part is quite amused at this latest development. "Did these 'celebrities' really speak about my serials? I wish them and the show all the best," she said.

Samir Nair of Star is far more forthright. "It's a free country and everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. But obviously these are people who've seen a certain level of success and would never reach the level of Ekta's serials. We at the channel aren't really bothered by what these people say."
