Director Suparn Varma is ready to bring his next project to theatres, and this time he has teamed up with Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam. Titled Haq, the courtroom drama is inspired by the landmark Shah Bano vs Ahmed Khan case that created a national debate on women’s rights.

According to Pinkvilla, the film has already been shot quietly and is now in the post-production stage. Produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, Haq is expected to deliver an intense narrative rooted in a real-life legal battle.

A source close to the development said, “The film draws from the historic Supreme Court judgment in the Shah Bano case. While the exact screenplay details have been kept under wraps, the theme and the proceedings are strong enough to spark public conversation.”

The film features Emraan Hashmi as a sharp yet conflicted lawyer navigating moral dilemmas inside the courtroom. Yami Gautam plays the central character, a woman fighting a long legal battle for justice. This will be Yami’s first collaboration with Emraan and also her return to portraying real-life inspired stories after Article 370.

Along with the leads, the film also stars Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady in significant roles. The team is preparing to release the teaser digitally in the coming days. An insider revealed, “The teaser is locked and those who have seen it believe it captures the film’s tone perfectly. It will also confirm the final release date.”

The Shah Bano vs Ahmed Khan case, on which the film is loosely based, remains one of India’s most discussed legal battles. The Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of Shah Bano was considered a milestone in the fight for women’s rights and equality. With a mix of courtroom drama and social commentary, Haq looks set to be one of the year’s more debated releases.
