Chapter 5 - And I found you
Next day morning...
"Chalo sab setup ho gaya?, Yaar iss setup ke artwork mai thoda problem hai...mujhe woh design bilkul acchi nahi lagi...kucch zyadaa colourful nahi ho gaya hai? abhi toh Maya ka character just faced light...phir peechhey yeh sab kya hai - its not going with the mood of suspense?!!" Bhairav was discussing with his team.
There was a lot of commotion in the theatre hall...a couple of people were busy setting up the props
"Sir, visual depth theek lag rahi hai neechey se? we are throwing cooler lights instead of warm colours now, theek hai na?" The person arranging lights asked Bhairav.
"Haa theek hai...pehle reduce the circumference of focus on the right side and intensify it there...wahi se Maya ki entry hogi...phir dheerey dheerey uska intensity kam karke, increase the circular area on which u throw the light. Then after exactly 1 minute, change the colours of light to red and yellow...its a fantasy drama...we need to be unconventional and mystifying to keep audience glued..."
"Sir...I am ready" Anandi called out from behind. She was dressed in a sleeveless V-collared white knee length dress which was tattered at the ends as her character was lost in a jungle.
"...Anandi, ready ho gayi tum? Good...comeon gather in everyone, I need to discuss something". Bhairav called his team.
"As you all know, with our new play, we are transcending the boundaries of a realistic theatrical presentation...it is about celebrating life and a musical extravaganza, we will be showing the character of Maya and her adventures in an imaginary world, where she ascends from sorrow to joy, from hell to heaven...it is different, very very different from what has been attempted in the world of Indian theater sofar...we are promising the audience a visual treat at an affordable price and opening doors to pure play of creativity and innovation. In order to bring across, what we want to, we need high levels of discipline and brilliant co-ordination between the technical and creative teams. From here on, I want everyone to be in sync and give in their best, I expect no less from all the talented people here. We are starting with the rehearsal of scene 2 in 15 minutes from now. Lets rock it everyone!!" Bhairav finished off, clapping hard, motivating his team to gear up for gruelling schedules of practice.
The team cheered for each other and got back to their respective work. Some handling the set and props, some handling the background music department, some finalizing the lighting arrangement and effects, some evaluating the possibility of setting up a hydraulic stage in the center...Anandi revising her dialogues and rehearsing her movement on stage, some artistes getting painted for the scene ahead...
"Arrey Sunil, woh ladka kaha hai? Abhi tak nahi aayaa...its 11.15?" Bhairav shouted, pulling up his specs...
"Sir, woh, usko phone aayaa tha, ki woh 11.30 tak aa jaayega, usse kucch zaroori kaam aa gaya tha..."
Bhairav was fuming...and so was Anandi...she detested latecomers...
"Ek kaam kartey hai, hum start kartey hai...lets not waste time, waise bhi, we have the auditorium to ourselves only for 2 hours today...and abhi kaafi time jaayega considering it is the start...he can join in later...Anandi lets start from your first scene and then continue with scene 2 - the Circle of fire..."
Anandi went back at her position.
The lights dimmed out to a shade of deep blue...the background music changed into a mystical tune...she was lost...and when she gave up hope, light fell on her face...coming out of her dilemma she opened her eyes...only to see that the faint glimmer of light came from the cluster of stars in the sky...(the ceiling of the stage had been lit up with stars through technological projections)...She smiled.
"The world around me is still dark, still black, still unknown...but the faint glimmer of light is enough to bring a smile on my face" she said.
As she looked intently at the stars, captivated by their beauty, a group of men circled around her. They were all painted red and yellow. They represented fire.
They clouded over her, wanting to engulf her in fire. The music changed to a fierce one. The lights changed into red...she was trapped... She was scared. They continued to sway around her in a circle...she wanted to escape...she couldnt go near the fire, it would swallow her...she couldnt run out of it, she couldnt stay where she was, it would catch her soon...She fell with a thud to the ground...she slipped back into her own memory...that day too she was surrounded by fire...only difference was, on that day, she did not even attempt to escape, but today...she will..she had gathered courage to fight out whatever was there in front of her...if only he would come back to help her to come out of it, she thought...
Just when the group of men were about to overpower her and cloud her completely, she saw his silhouette against the dimming sky. Finally, he had come. Anandi was filled with a renewed exuberance...a renewed hope. He had finally come back to her, she thought to herself. The figure drew closer. She couldnt see him clearly. A tall, muscular figure was approaching closer. She pressed her eyes hard to see him. And with a giant leap, he jumped inside the circle of fire and swiftly picked her up in his arms. Anandi held on to him, swaying between her own past and the fictional present. With a force, he pushed aside the men painted as fire and carried her over to the other side.
The spotlight was on the two of them. She finally saw his face.
A chiselled jawline, a pair of deep brown eyes and an embracing smile greeted her.
She jolted out of her past. It was not him. But his gaze held her eyes on to him. She was perplexed and in a state of confusion. She did not want to hold on to him, but could not leave him either. He smiled, and spoke out in a dark and heavy baritone:
"I will always save you"
She was stunned and discomforted.
"Who are you?" She asked, holding on to him. He stared deeper into her eyes.
"...I am your Hope"
