News about your interest in jewellery designing came out of the blue. How did that come about and why did you keep it a secret?

I never kept it a secret -just didn't tell the media. I wanted to be sure myself before telling the world. Jewellery designing is a new thought, a new idea for me as lately I find myself totally engrossed about it. I used to doodle designs while waiting for my shots and have even designed some jewellery for few friends on their special occasions. My friends and family have told me time and again that I have a good eye and great aesthetic sense when it comes to jewellery or mixing and matching, combining accessories for Indian and western outfits. After a lot of thought, I decided to take this hobby further and turn it into a serious passion. I am educating myself about jewellery designing as it mostly involves physics and chemistry, which I enjoyed as a student. I am giving jewellery designing a serious shot.
What are your plans next?

I have begun studying in Mumbai for now. I am doing diploma from two institutes Gemological Institute of America and Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery where I will be learning the basics. Later I will go to New York for three months in June for further studies. I also plan to have an exhibition with few select pieces soon.
With studies, three month leave and exhibition, how much time will you get for your acting career?

In Balika Vadhu, various tracks get prominence according to the storyline. Balika has been a wonderful experience and I will continue with it. At times, the focus is on me or Anandi or Dadisaa or others. Currently, I have given the production house fewer dates than usual as I have my classes and I have been traveling a lot in the last month to Paris to meet the a team there who works for me. I have also gone to Jodhpur and Bikaner to figure out what I want to make and how it can be done. The research is taking up a lot of my time.
Will it be a balance between acting and jewellery designing?

I really don't know at this point in time. I think I wont leave acting but then I had never planned to be an actress either. So I will go with the flow and enjoy all that comes my way. I hope to workout a way to continue acting and be a jewellery designer as well.

NEHA MARDA Accuses Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa of Favouritism
[15 Feb 2011]
JHALAK… DIDN'T WANT ME ON THEIR SHOW, SO THEY MADE SOME EXCUSE

Neha Marda needs no introduction. The actress has shot to fame with her strong portrayal of Gehna in Balika Vadhu and has become a household name today. While acting remains her first love, she also has an undying passion for dancing. A trained classical dancer, she has participated in various dance reality shows over the years and has won most of them. So it came as a huge shocker, when Neha was not allowed to participate in the ongoing season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Not one to cry over spilt milk, Neha maturely took it in her stride. But, like most things in the world of television, even this decision was not permanent. In a surprising turn of events, the organizers of Jhalak…approached her to participate in a special episode of the show and she obliged. Showtime caught up with the actress to know the real story behind the fiasco.

"I was all ready to participate in Jhalak...Our talks were done and almost everything was finalized. And then one day, my manager called me up and told me that the show organizers aren't signing me. They said that I had already participated in another reality show, Nach Le Ve With Saroj Khan before, so I couldn't participate in this one. I couldn't believe it. That's hardly any ground to not sign someone for a dance show.
What's even strange is that some days later, I got to know that they had signed Sushant Singh Rajput. He has done not one but two reality shows. I think they just didn't want me on the show, so they made some excuse," she narrates.

But did she not have a talk with the show's organizers to know why she was being excluded from the show? "I avoided having a discussion with them. Because I can see it in front of my eyes that they are letting someone like Sushant participate, even though he has done a reality show before. And they are giving me this reason to keep me out of the show. So this cannot be the actual reason, there has to be some other reason. But I have taken it sportingly. If they don't want me, it's their loss," she asserts.

Though snubbed, the actress chooses not to harbour negative feelings against the show. What's more, when they approached her to do a special episode, she enthusiastically gave her nod. "They roped me in for a special episode, where we had to dance with the contestants and help them win. I was happy doing that too because I have always wanted to perform in front of Madhuri Dixit and that happened through the show. As far as Jhalak… is concerned, from the time I entered the industry, I knew that one day I wanted to get into the show. But things obviously didn't work out the way I wanted them to.

Who knows, maybe there's something better in store for me," she ruefully smiles.
Besides the Jhalak…episode, there's something else that has left Neha seething with anger. An impostor has created a fake Facebook account under the actress' name and has been getting in touch with her co-stars, industry friends, et al. Quite understandably, this has not gone down too well with the actress. "The person who is operating that account is putting up nonsensical messages saying that I'm desperately looking for work. That is not true, I have enough work. He is also getting in touch with the industry people as well as my relatives. This is just not acceptable. I have reported it to the cyber crime cell and I'm trying to shut down that profile," she explains.

She explains the hazards she has had to face thanks to her impostor. "A few days ago, a stranger came up to me and hugged me. Then he started asking me how my date went last night. I was dumbfounded. I didn't know what this person was talking about. I told him clearly that I didn't know him and had no idea what he was talking about. Then he explained to me how we were chatting last night about my so-called date on Facebook. You know, there are so many celebrities who come up to me thinking that we are friends on Facebook. Because that impostor has sent out friend requests to every person in the industry and chats with them under the pretence of being me. I really don't appreciate it and I'll put a stop to all this."

Even these incidents aside, Neha has had quite an eventful 2010. The actress had a near-fatal accident a while ago and the memory of it still haunts her. "I was performing at an event in Kolkata. I finished my performance late at night, around 2.30 a.m. and had to catch an early morning flight. It being night time, my driver was quite tired and sleepy. So he dozed off while driving and the car hit a lamppost. The car turned upside down and caught fire. The doors were also jammed," she recollects. "I somehow managed to break the windows and got out of the car. Since it was late at night, there was no one around. I had to finally seek the help of a truck driver and reach the airport. Once I reached Mumbai, I was kept under observation for a day at the Bombay Hospital. They took MRI scans and checked everything. But thankfully, nothing serious had happened. I just had a few scratches on my face."

Naturally, an accident of this magnitude leaves one traumatized and that's exactly what happened with Neha too. "The whole idea of how it happened and why it happened had shaken me up. So I took a break for a week and went to Indore with my family. I needed that break because even though the physical injury wasn't much, the mental trauma was a lot."

As grave an accident as it was, Neha kept it to herself and didn't let her parents know about it lest they got worried. "I just told them that I had an accident because it had already come out in the news. But I didn't tell them how serious it was. When the word came out that I had a near-fatal accident, I told them that the media was just exaggerating it," she laughs.

While these incidents have been nothing but tumultuous, thankfully her professional life has been more than satisfying. Though she bagged prominent roles in Jo Ishq Ki Marzi Woh Rab Ki Marzi and Ek Thi Rajkumari, it was her act in Balika Vadhu that put her in the spotlight. But not many know that she initially didn't want to do the role. "When the show's creative called me up and said that there's a character called Gehna, I instantly refused it. I told her that I was only looking for lead roles. I anyway went for the audition and fell in love with the character. Thankfully, I got selected for the role. I knew that the protagonist was Anandi. But that didn't bother me much because the show's main pillars are Suguna, Gehna and Anandi."

She proves her point further as she adds, "Around the same time, I was approached for the lead role of another show called Shree on Zee TV. It went off air seven months back. Had I chosen the lead role in Shree, my show would've gone off air. But I chose Balika Vadhu and see what it did to my career. So I think playing the lead is not that big a deal. Playing an important character in a show is much more important."

While her professional life has always been talked about, Neha has always kept her personal life just as it should be – personal. Ask her to spill the beans on her love life and she grins, "I am single and looking for a guy to get married to. I am not looking for a fling or a relationship. I belong to a very orthodox Marwadi family where they get their daughters married by the age of 18. My parents too are looking for a suitable guy for me. And when they find the right guy for me, I will happily get married."

Now that's a surprise since the current generation believes in love marriages and steers clear of arranged marriages. "Honestly, I prefer arranged marriages. If you have a love marriage and it goes wrong, you have nothing to fall back on. But in case of an arranged marriage, your parent's house is always open. You can go and complain to them, ki see where you got me married," she jokes.

And what are the qualities she is looking for in her husband? "I want my guy to be madly in love with me. He should be filthy rich; that is the most important criterion. Also, my guy should be all-man. I don't like chocolate boys, they don't appeal to me. And he should wear glasses. I find men in glasses very hot," she giggles.

Well, this girl sure knows what she wants. Guess it is this trait that has seen her rise from being just another participant in Boogie Woogie to one of the most celebrated stars on the small screen today. And if her self-belief is anything to go by, she will definitely go a long way.

Anandi to study again
Buzz up!

Balika Vadhu's Anandi will now enroll in school again. After her encounter with her husband Jagya in Mumbai, she has realized that she doesn't fit into his life anymore.

Like he said, he has moved on from their small village Jetsar and understood that the world is much larger and much bigger than they could ever imagine.

Anandi, who had given up studies, even burnt her books to maintain peace in the family, now will fight for her rights and express desire to study further.

A source on the show reveals, "She has already spoken to her teacherji who supports her fully. But also reminds her that she has a long fight ahead of her. In the upcoming episodes, Anandi will speak to her in-laws, who will be thrilled about this idea. Her Bapusa and Maasa encourage her to widen her horizon and educate herself. Dadisaa will be a huge obstacle in this plan as she will object to Anandi studying again. How they overcome this problem and what other problems Anandi has to face will be interesting to watch."

As earlier, Anandi will study at home post her household chores and go to the school to give her exams. But the kids there will tease her as they will be much younger while she will be the odd one out.

Anandi aka Pratusha Banerjee was unavailable for comment as she is out of town.

Anshul Trivedi and Pratyusha Banerjee

Soon there will be an entry of a new guy in Gauri's life in Balika Vadhu.

A source says, "(Gauri's uncle wants her to get married as he feels she is old enough to go to a new house now, so he will send an NRI guy to visit her. Anshul Trivedi debuts with this role. There will be some more twists and turns between Jagya (Shashank Vyas) and Gauri before that as he will confess his love for her.

"Anandi (Pratyusha Banerjee) back home will be seen busy with her books now as she wants to study and be capable enough to stand up to Jagya and his friends. Anandi's teacher will help her in her studies and other issues. Jagya's father and mother will also support her but Dadisa will be against this decision. This is not the only challenge Anandi faces as she will have to go through an awkward situation of being back to school with young kids. And though she will try and work hard to focus on studies, she won't be able to push away the thought of Jagya and Gauri together."

Pratyusha says, "Yes, you will see Anandi studying once again." Anshul stayed unavailable for comment.

Smita Bansal to breaking the monotony

TNN, Feb 22, 2011, 12.00am IST

Three years down the line, playing the same character can make the role monotonous. But Smita Bansal has learned a new way to rejuvenate herself every time she reaches a stagnation.

Smita who has been playing Sumitra in Balika Vadhu for the past three years feels lucky to have got a role that earns her blessings from elders and recognition from youngsters.

"Every time I feel that there is nothing new that I can give through my character and that it has become monotonous, I remember the accolades it has earned me. I had recently visited my mother's house in Jaipur and the response of the people there was simply overwhelming. The elders blessed me and expressed the desire of having a similar bahu as Sumitra.

What amazed me was that they took the character so seriously that the fact that I am Smita was overlooked. It gave me the push to comeback and play the character with even more dedication. It encourages me to give my best every time I face the camera," says Smita.Three years down the line, playing the same character can make the role monotonous. Balika Vadhu takes a three year story progression..

Balika Vadhu takes a three year story progression..

COLORS' Balika Vadhu will have a fresh story to tell post the small jump in time that will take place sometime next week..

COLORS' Balika Vadhu will soon see a fresh new track with the story going thro' a natural progression. There will be a passage of time shown, after which Jagya (Shashank Vyas) will be a doctor by profession and Anandi (Pratyusha Banerjee) in the meanwhile, would have completed her studies.

Our source states, "The story will move forward by three years very soon. The story as of now, is going thro' a very crucial phase wherein the differences between Jagya and Anandi are widening. Jagya will soon confess his love for Gauri (Anjum Farooki) and they will be madly in love. On the other hand, Dadisa (Surekha Sikri) will protest against Anandi's quest to study, and will eventually leave the house".

"The three year time lap will take the story to a new high, wherein Jagya will come home after completing his studies. He will continue to be smitten by the love of Gauri. He would not be impressed with the efforts put in by Anandi, and will blame her when Dadisa walks out of the house", adds our source.

This jump in time will be shown sometime next week.

When contacted, Writer Purnendu Shekar confirmed the buzz and said, "As we have to take the story ahead now, we are introducing another time gap of few years. This cannot be called as leap, it is a small passing time".

Pratyusha Banerjee too confirmed that the story is taking a jump of three years..

Get ready viewers, for a fresh new beginning in Balika Vadhu..

Neha Marda

Neha Marda is one of the adorable television actresses. She has worked in serials like Ek thi Rajkumari, Saath Rahega Always, Jo Ishq Ki Marzi Woh Rab Ki Marzi and the ongoing Balika Vadhu. Tellychakkar spoke to her on her on money matters.

How important is money to you?
It is very important but I feel the heart is a lot more important for it helps us to connect with our loved ones all around. But, I love money.

Are you an impulsive buyer?
Very impulsive, it's not that I am going to go around shopping but if I find a thing I feel I'd be comfortable buying, I go ahead.

What have you invested in?
Actually, my dad handles all my money so I am sure he will be investing it in the right manner. But, otherwise I think my house has been my biggest investment.

What is your most expensive purchase?
My house.

Do you feel financially secure?
Yes. I am a graduate and I know that even if I don't act I can take up a job and be happy with it. My dad has always been there and since he has enough money I do not really need to bother about that.

Who handles your expenses?
My dad.

What was your first salary? What did you do with it?
My first salary was 1,50,000 as I was playing the lead for Sahara One. I gave it all to my mom. Believe me I still do the same thing even today when I get my pay cheque, I give it to her and she feels good about it. But, later that money comes to my account and I spend it (laughs).

How much money do you carry every day?
I hardly carry cash with me. I carry just 200-300 rupees and my cards.

Any advice for investors?
I need advice from them because I do not understand anything about investments. But, on a serious note I think in Mumbai it's all about investing in gold, diamonds and property. So, one must invest most of their money in th
