Some TV stars have mastered the art of annoying you, and even succeed in waking up a deeply buried violent streak. While most of them play characters which are simply repulsive, the others are far too attention-seeking to be likeable. Here's a list of regular prime time offenders who have mastered the art of rubbing you the wrong way and make you reach for your remote control to quickly change over to a saner channel. Read on' your list could just match ours.

Shekhar Suman

He has been moving and shaking for donkey's years though his six-pack abs and stiff face (Botox, anyone?) will want you to believe otherwise. When he's not ha-ha-ha ing on assorted stand-up comedy shows, then he's busy trying to resurrect his non-existent Bollywood career (or Adhyayan's for that matter). Of late, the Badshah of Blah is pouting and spouting pearls of marital wisdom on reality show, Perfect Bride. But his spiked hair, his punning on almost anything and everything and his desperate efforts to fight the years off his advancing age makes your skin crawl. Mr Suman, there is such a thing as ageing gracefully.

Navjot Singh Sidhu

TV has the knack of attracting fools of all shapes and sizes. And Sidhu has certainly overstayed his time. When he's not conducting post mortems of cricket matches in his irritating style, he's seen falling over the place (ask Mahima Chaudhary) laughing at the most inane jokes. Thank God, he declined to go to the Bigg Boss house. Imagine, having to see him maaro the same old, cycled and recycled PJs for 84 days. He thinks he's so funny that he can make people laugh but he doesn't realise that he's only increasing the number of people who hate him.

Rakhi Sawant

Nautanki is her middle name and Drama Queen could just be engraved on her' well, we won't go that far. She laughs, she cries, she hollers, she makes faces, she walks out, she faints, she marries, she breaks up' in short, she does everything to embarrass herself every time she's on prime time TV. Don't believe us, watch her on the reruns of Nach Baliye, Bigg Boss, Swayamvar or Pati, Patni Aur Woh. Little wonder then, you see her on every channel worth its TRP and now you want to throw up the next time she pops up. Jejus, humein bachao!

Archana Puran Singh

Thank God, she appears only in one show. Imagine, having to put up with her howling away with that grating laugh on every channel. She must have been Sidhu's long lost sister in her last birth. Annoying with a capital A, Archana's throaty laugh-a-second appearance on Comedy Circus can put you off the small screen and laughter shows completely. We think she doesn't find anything funny at home or in her life, so she does these shows to entertain herself, but ends up messing up our happiness. Someone should cast her in one of those overly-done Punjabi-flavoured chiffon family dramas so that the TVwallas can rest in peace.

Avika Gor

Recently, she appeared on a chat show and we really wanted to strangle her as she behaved like a star already with her pat 'I want to be Miss Universe' lines. The cutesy balika of Balika Vadhu has changed overnight into the most boring, irritating character on the small screen right now. She weeps and weeps buckets when she's not doing mehnat mazdoori, a la Nirupa Roy. She's such a big bore that every time she appears on screen, we want to run for that remote control. Can someone kidnap her? We are sure dadisa won't mind.

Lohani took leave from work and its's been nearly five months since the actor is waiting to come back to Balika Vadhu. If sources are to be believed, then the agony is about to get over for the actor. Lohani plays the character of Niranjan in the show.

Says a source, "Some two weeks back, it was discussed that Lohani be brought back to the show. However, the timing of his return still hasn't been decided. The current track is doing well and only after it's over that we'll weave in Niranjan's track. However, he surely will come back."

An actor requesting anonymity too claimed that he/she has heard about Rahuol coming back to the show.

Interestingly, Lohani himself expressed surprise at this news. "Oh, is it? I still haven't heard anything from the production. Looking at the numbers the current track is generating I'm a bit sceptical about my chances. Nevertheless, it's been a long wait for me and I hope this news is true."

Sadiya Siddiqui to do a spl episode of Ballika Vadhu
Buzz up!

Sadiya Siddiqui who played Anandi's teacher in Balika Vadhu will be seen in a special episode which will air on Children's Day, November 14.

Sadiya has shot for one day only so far for this show," All of sudden
they called me and told me about this special episode which they are
planning to shoot with me and since I had time, I told them fine. They
are planning to bring back my character for a few more episodes, they
are still working on it, and so my track will be expanded in future."

There will surely be a twist in the tale after Sadiya's entry," The sequence
will be like this, that I have come here in this village with my school
for inter- school competition, there I will meet Anandi, her family
will call me at her place and inform me that they have given her
permission to study further .I will be happy to hear that. But when I
will find out that her Dadisa is actually against her education and
I will reveal that how Dadisa had forced Anandi to burn her books
and all."

Sadiya is flying to US for her play Your Place Or Mine,"We are going
to have at least 12-15 shows there, I will be there for a month and
then I am planning to stay back there for new year and then I will
come back in January. This play is directed by Darshan Jariwala and he
is playing my husband in the play."

It is a commercial comedy play," The story is actually about a take on
marriage .I am playing a happy wife who is also suspicious about her
hubby sometimes and there is yet another unmarried couple, so in the
end of the play this married couple will be in such a situation that
they will decide to part their ways while the other couple will get
married."

It is not like that Sadiya will only do plays now, she is open for
shows also if something interesting will come up. She missed the
chance to work with Anurag Kashyap for his upcoming film but she
informs that talks are on with yet another big banner and if
everything will get finalised then she will start shooting for it in the
New Year.

Those of you who have been following the show Balika Vadhu since the day it began will probably remember the young actress Sadia Siddiqui who
A still from the serial
played the role of Anandi's teacher Sandhya.

Anandi was much influenced by her teacher and wanted to study further however her impending wedding to Jagdish caused her to discontinue her studies

Now, after almost a year, Anandi's teacher is back on the scene albeit for a short while. However, this time, she makes her comeback not as a teacher but as the Education Inspector and is invited as a chief guest for the Children's Day function in Jagdish's school.
On seeing her teacher back, Anandi is delirious with joy. However, during the course of the function, the secret of discontinuation of Anandi's studies is revealed. How this secret is revealed and what Sandhya will now do is something we all can't wait to see!

Meanwhile, we decided to catch up with Sadia who is back on the show after almost a year. Speaking to us she said, "Oh it was a pleasure to be back on the show. This is a special one hour show tonight on the occasion of Children's Day in which I make a comeback. I was quite surprised to note that my fans had been quite eager to see me back on the show. I've been getting calls from people expressing how happy they are to know that I'm back. However, as of now it's only this one episode that I am acting in for I am going to be out of town for a while...but lets see if I can come back again for a longer stint!"

Well girl we'll definitely be looking forward to see you back on the show. We missed your spunky style...and we're sure little Anandi's nodding in agreement to us! Hence don't miss Sadia on the episode tonight on Balika Vadhu special at 10pm only on Colors!

Granny tales

SARAH SALVADORE , TNN 16 November 2009, 12:00am IST
Email Discuss Bookmark/Share Save Text Size: |
The days of telly moms-in-law seem numbered. There was a time when the on-screen saas didn't leave any stone unturned to create havoc in the
Surekha Sikri in Balika Vadhu
lives of the dutiful bahus.

Now, the quintessential tormentor of the daughter-in-law has taken a backseat as another family member has taken over the mantle 'tormentor-in-chief'. It's time to say hello to the evil daadis/naanis.

A look at the current crop of popular shows on TV will prove that the mothers-in-law have been reduced to playing submissive and crying women. In the absence of a vampish saas, the slot has been successfully filled by the conniving daadi. Uttaran has Pratima Kazmi playing the mean grandmom, Meghna Malik's the mean Ammaji in Na Ana Is Des Mere Laado, while Naaniji in Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai is causing roadblocks in Alekh's successful treatment by shattering his confidence, Surekha Sikri is the much-feared daadisa, and Amma in Chhoti Bahu ensures that she's making Radhika's life miserable. It's the daadi show all the way.
Breaking away from the traditional and lovable portrayal of grandmothers in the shows, soapmakers have chalked out a different character-route for the matriarch of the family. "When making a show, a negative character is a must for the story to go forward. Either we get the character from outside or from within the family. In Balika Vadhu we have given Daadisa's character shades of grey to keep the story going," says producer Sunjoy Waddhwa on being quizzed about the new trend.

The makers also believe that an external force bringing about negativity in family dramas don't go down well with the audience. "It's a family drama. Everything that happens should be within the house, even if it's a person spreading bad vibes. And honestly, people are tired of watching the same saas-bahu struggles," opines actor Sara Khan. No wonder then that these shows are enjoying a successful stay at the TRP charts. Balika Vadhu raked in a TRP of 4.19, while Bidaai followed close with 4.08. Uttaran averaged a 4.09, while Chhoti Bahu stands at 3.1.

Production houses insist that the portrayal of the daadi/naani as the negative character is not just for the sake of 'change'. "If one observes the so-called negative characters, he/she will notice that they are not completely negative. The grandmother is the matriarch of the family and rules with an iron hand. It's natural for humans to err and her character is very human and real," explains Waddhwa.

"In urban families, which are basically nuclear, we think these characters are negative because we don't live under such restrictions and fear. But rural families are bound by restriction, culture and tradition and such characters do exist," he adds. Producer Rajan Shahi too shares the same opinion. "In a traditional set-up there are a lot of restrictions. Those who impose these restrictions are viewed as people with negative characters. But that's not true. One needs to understand the reasons behind it as well," explains Shahi.

So while traditional family dramas are being lapped up by tellybuffs, let the grannies bring in the TRP.

Avika Gor bonds with Neha Marda
Anandi of Balika Vadhu is very friendly with Ghena (Neha Marda) as compared to other co-actors. Whenever Avika comes on the sets, she searches for Neha and during the break time along with her studies, she chats up with Neha. For Neha, Avika is a sweet heart.
