Girls go ga-ga over Vikrant Massey

Vikrant Massey, who plays Shyam in Balika Vadhu, is a rage with girls of all ages. He got a taste of his fame and fan following on a recent night out.

A friend of the actor tells Indya, "On Saturday night, Vikrant had gone to a Southern Mumbai club with his friends. He was pleasantly surprised when a security guy approached him for his autograph. Once at the club, several girls went absolutely ga-ga over him. They went up to him and told him how much they love Balika Vadhu and his work in the serial. They couldn't get their hands off him, were on cloud nine while talking to him and even kissed him on the cheek. After clicking pictures with him, they wanted to dance with him but he had to leave as it was getting late. There was a girl from Sri Lanka also who wasted no time in telling him how big a fan she was! He was pretty surprised to see so many people recognizing him and girls gushing over him and approaching him."

The friend told Indya about another incident too. "On Monday night Vikrant had gone to the airport to drop off a friend. He was standing with a family friend when a family from Pune spotted him. They started talking among themselves while looking in his direction and smiling at him. Then they went up to him and told him about their fondness for the serial and his character Shyam. Vikrant is a down-to-earth, level-headed and soft spoken guy who is really nice to everyone. The family was thrilled-to-bits when they clicked a picture with him. After that he went to a suburban caf post midnight and again people started staring at him but they turned out to be friends of his family."

When contacted, Vikrant confirmed the incidents and said, "It is flattering and embarrassing when people recognize me and smile at me as I am not used to it. One of the biggest compliments I have received lately is when people tell me they have started watching the show because of my character Shyam."

Rajendra Gupta aka Mahavir Singh, the latest entrant in Sphere Origins' Balika Vadhu, is an archrival of Dadisa. Rajendra Gupta who has been in industry for around 24 years, shares his experience on Balika Vadhu and more…

What made you take up Balika Vadhu?

I have been a fan of Balika Vadhu since a long time. I was very impressed by the concept and the way it was presented. I was in touch with lots of artists from the serial and always complemented them for their performance. The sets, costume and language, everything has been worked upon so well that they seem real. Today, there are many serials, which start off with bang but within three months start losing its charm, but Balika Vadhu has maintained its position till today.

Why did you approve of this negative character Mahavir Singh?

As I said earlier, I have been a fan of Balika Vadhu. When the production team approached me for the character of Mahavir Singh, I was more than happy to be associated with the show. Mahavir Singh is a strong character. Though negative, the character holds a strong ground.

How did you prepare yourself to get into the character of Mahavir Singh?

Since I am from Haryana, it was not very difficult for me to pick up the language and the diction. I have been very familiar with the lifestyle, gesture and thoughts. So picking up the character was not an intricate task for me.

How is the experience of working with Surekha Sikri and Heeba Shah?

It's lovely working with them. Both are very good actors. Since we are all associated with theater, I have worked with them before too. I have great respect for Surekhaji and I think she is a great actor.

Share your experience on working with Sphere Origins?

It's a very dedicated team. They are very perfect in whatever they do. Preaching a social issue in such an entertaining way is not a piece of cake. They have put in a lot of creativity and imagination, which is why the show is still watched in households.

Avika Gor (Anandi of Balika Vadhu) is a Gujarati, and loves to dance in her onscreen avatar. So this would be a good opportunity to enjoy herself, which she doesn't get to do in the show. She doesn't even need to go shopping and can use her outfits from the show.

Neha Marda turns 22

Neha Marda, who plays Gehna in Balika Vadhu, turns 22 today. We caught up with her on the eve of her birthday to find out her plans:

"I have to be at the shoot at 9.30am," she says. "My friends had planned a surprise party for me tonight. I was out of town and my flight was supposed to land in the night, but I came back earlier. When I came home, my whole house was decorated with balloons, chocolates and flowers. There were a few gifts also. So, I got to know that they were throwing me a party."

Neha hopes her unit members will remember her birthday too. "This is a Balika Vadhu tradition; they call us for the shoot, order two big cakes and, after cutting the cake, they'll smear it on the birthday boy or girl. They also get a few snacks. They usually do not forget birthdays."

Neha is originally from Kolkata, where her parents still live. "When I was a kid, my parents would wake me up early. We would visit the temple, perform a havan at home and then
distribute prasad. In the evening, I would wear new dress and have dinner with my family," she says. "Till at the age of nine or so, we went out as a family; after that I started going out with my friends. Since I'm in the habit of going to a temple on my birthday, this year too I will visit the Iskon temple at Gokuldham. I wanted to go to Siddhivinayak but won't be able to because of my shoot."

For her birthday, Neha wanted an iPhone, which her friend gifted her. "My parents usually give me money and ask me to buy something, but this year they have sent me some gifts. I haven't opened them yet; I'm sure my mother would have sent a salwar-kameez as she likes to see me in traditional clothes, and my father must have sent me an electronic item." Neha also likes to preserve greeting cards that she has received since childhood. "One of my best and most precious gifts was this frame my friend specially made it for me. It has my picture carved on wood."

Neha misses her family, but says, "My friends make up for it as they never leave me alone on my birthday. I am the youngest daughter of the family and I was born after many mannats, so everyone pampers me. But my friends too are very sweet and don't let me feel lonely in Mumbai." Neha's friends gave her a pleasant surprise last year too. She recollects: "My show Ek Thi Rajkumari had gone off air and I had a lot of free time. I thought my friends had forgotten my birthday. At 11pm, I was alone at home and quite depressed. One of my friends called and asked me to come over to her place to bring in my birthday. I refused initially but she forced me to and I agreed. I went there and found her house fully decorated, everything was gathered, and it was a big surprise for me."

The actress says she has the typical personality traits of a Virgo. "I think you need to be strong to live alone. I am confident too and that is why I can read my dialogues in front of such senior actors. Giving retakes also takes a lot of guts. Plus, I always give my best to whatever I do."

We hope she has a great day and year ahead.

Neha Marda, famous as Gehna, of the very popular show 'Balika Vadhu' has a reason to smile, as it's her birthday today. So, what are her birthday plans? Apparently, our b'day girl is busy shooting till late evening today, and goes for a quite dinner with her friends after the pack-up.

The pretty lass does not mind her hectic schedule, as her friends gave her a surprise birthday party last night that went on till the wee hours of the morning. She had great time partying, "There were good food, good mood and DJ's good music," chirps an excited Neha.

But what's surprising here, is that Neha can not handle surprises She shyly confess, "I tend to be weird when I get surprises; so yesterday instead of being happy I got shocked and could not speak for almost two hours. I enjoyed later, but my friends kept wondering for sometime whether I was happy with the surprise or not"

Though, Neha had a tough time digesting her surprise birthday bash, she seemed to have partied hard. Here's wishing you a very Happy Birthday

Balika Vadhu goes to TV festival

Balika Vadhu has changed the face of Indian television especially the little girl Anandi's character has made audiences forget the iconic bahus like Tulsi and Parvati

Now the success of Balika Vadhu is going
abroad.Balika Vadhu will be featured in a TV and Drama Festival in
Tokyo, Japan.

About this achievement we spoke with producer Sujoy Wadwaa.

"We all are very happy with this news which we got few days back
and still I can't imagine that the show has gone far away
outside India and so for that only there are meetings going on as how
we will represent our treasure on the international stage. The
festival begins on October 30 and Avika and I will be present during
the screening of the serial. We knew Balika Vadhu would be different
and would garner critical acclaim, but the commercial success is a
huge compliment for us and also for the actors who have worked hard
for the show."

Further, he told us "I as producer never expected that this
serial will make us proud but at the same time I knew that the concept
of child marriage will help this serial go further and so this is
the result. Over there we are planning to show few episodes of Balika
Vadhu with Japanese subtitles and so just working on the selection of
the episodes. I am very glad that social issues are prominent
abroad especially in Japan."

About the future plans happy producer tells us that," We are also
venturing into films and currently we are working on the script and by
January 2010 we will be able to speak about the star cast."
