Mahrru Shaikh loves playing a glam mom
</span>

First modelling came her way on a platter and when all was going well acting offers also came her way without asking. While she was flying with British Airways she dabbled in modelling. Her modelling career took off so well right with her first campaign for Pears that Mahrru Shaikh decided to pursue modelling as a hobby.

But since the airline didn't allow her to continue with modelling she quit the job and joined Saudia. Thus flying and modelling went hand-in-hand with ad campaigns like Aquafresh, Lifeboy Gold, Zero B and Chiclets for which she wore a swimming costume. A popular face in ads she got an offer from Sony to anchor BSA Star Ki Pasand.

Soon she got tired of flying and decided to quit her job as an airhostess as her acting career took off with serials like Parivartan, Aurat and Hindustani where she played glamorous characters. But the transition to mother's roles happened with Yeh Nazdikiyan.

"The channel and production house convinced me to play a mother. The character was a take-off on Shobhaa De and it was the main lead. I didn't regret playing the role because it was a well-rounded character but unfortunately I got slotted in mother's roles," says Mahrru who is however, happy playing a glamorous mother on television. "Despite playing a character of my age in B. R. Film's Aurat they offered me a mother's role in Dushman."

"Actors don't have much choice. They have to go by the channel's call," adds Mahrru who plays Karun's mother in Kabhi To Nazar Milao. "Like all mothers she is upset with the fact that her son is in love with a blind girl. But when she realises that Sunaina will become her son's strength she starts supporting her son. It's an emotional love story and my character is etched out very well. In fact, all the characters are well structured and that's what really matters." She is equally happy with her role in Aisa Des Hai Mera. But Mahrru agrees that in a daily soap anything can happen as stories are sent for a toss and characters get sidetracked completely.

She feels disheartened when stories are skewed and her role is sidetracked. Like it happened with her in Jassi and Millee. "I had a good role in Jassi as Arman's mother. But later the serial went off-track and my character went out of focus completely," says Mahrru who was equally disappointed with her role in Millee. "I had a my own story and a beautiful track. But they messed it up, made the serial into a kid's show and cheated the audience."

In daily soaps, according to Mahrru, tracks tend to change quickly. "That's something actors don't have a control over. When more than the story, fashion and looks taking over and channels insist that actors should be presentable, anything can happen," she laughs. "In the earlier days serials were realistic and there were no plastic surgeries ," she adds.

Gaurav's a satisfied soul!

Small screen's sexy Sam seems to be in an elevated mood these days! Gaurav Chopra, who shocked viewers after being voted out from Nach Baliye 2 along with girlfriend Narayani Shastri, is enjoying every bit of his daily show Aisa Des Hain Mera on Sony TV.

"Kirron Kher is a fantabulous actor"- Gaurav Chopra

Says Gaurav, "I am putting in 100 per cent for the show. It's not like the any other conventional series which we see on the tube these days. The creative work is great. For a two and a half minute scene we shoot for nothing less then four hours and it's not a typical inhouse sequence. We are exploring different locations and try changing it for every scene," states Gaurav.

The actor considers himself lucky that he got a chance to act with Kirron Kher, who has just entered the show and plays his mother. "She is a fantabulous actor and working with her is a pleasure!" smiles Chopra. He recalls this unforgettable incident which happened a couple of days back while shooting for an emotional sequence, "Kirronji had to look into my eyes and get a bit emotional. But she naturally started crying which brought tears to my eyes too. And implausibly even our director got emotional. This episode was indeed very touching!"

The story of Aisa Des... is in for major twists and turns and will leave the viewers surprised!

"Nach Baliye has given enough shocks to the audience, now things which unveil on the show will be expected!"

Apart from the daily, Gaurav is now gearing up for the wild card round which will be shot on the 1 November and aired on 6 November. "Well, I guess Nach Baliye has given enough shocks to people, now things which unveil on the show will be expected!" says Gaurav. According to him people have still not understood the concept of this reality show and its new format.

"People are under a major misconception that we got low votes, but that's untrue. We were fourth highest on the list, which is completely fine. The previous episode's votes add up to present episodes marks given by the judges and we did score low on that particular day, afterall!" asserts Gaurav.

The two commitments are keeping him occupied, and he is pretty happy the way things are shaping up.

'I will think twice before doing a stunt scene next time'

Sowmya Tandon recently hurt herself while shooting on the railway tracks

HARSHADA REGE

Sowmya Tandon, who plays Rusty in Aisa Des Hai Mera, tried her hand at doing her own stunt and though the actor found it thrilling she is not keen to repeat the same in the future. The scene required Sowmya to run on the train track when her on-screen husband is trying to commit suicide. "We were shooting at Palghar. When I was told about the scene, I did not realise that it would be so dangerous. Since the track that we were shooting on was for out-station trains, the trains would approach at a high speed" says Sowmya, who was worried whether she would get the stunt right. Sowmya says that thankfully she got the stunt right. "I pushed Gaurav and fell on the other side. But I fell on the stone next to the tracks, which hurt me. But I couldn't go to the doctor immediately since we had to finish the shooting. I went to the doctor who bandaged my hand and asked me to take rest," says Sowmya. And though Sowmya managed to the scene, she is not keen to repeat her act. She says, "Next time, I will think twice before doing a stunt scene again. I'll try and opt for a body double. One needs to have professional stuntmen for such scenes." Her action scene apart, Sowmya is happy with the way the show is shaping up. "The show is being liked a lot right now, its keeping me busy, but once it is wrapped up, I'll take up new projects and maybe even try my hand at films," says Sowmya

Simple plays different shades!

Simple Kaul has her hands full for now with two Sony soaps Kajjal and Aisa Des Hai Mera. The actor entered both the shows recently wherein she plays a Radio Jockey in Kajjal and a spirited college girl in Aisa Des Hai Mera.

Simple Kaul: Playing not soo simple roles!

Talking about Kajjal Simple affirms "I play Niki, who's a negative character in the show. It's a continuing character and quite interesting. Niki is forever putting down and humiliating Kajjal (Surveen Chawla) whenever possible," chirps Delhi girl Simple who is waiting to sign a few more exciting shows coming her way.
While in Aisa Des Hai Mera Simple plays a positive character, that of a college girl. Elaborating on her role, she says, " I play Simi, who's a positive, energetic, bubbly girl from Gaurav Chopra's family. She is Kiran Kher and Pawan Malhotra's daughter. The current plot focuses on my relationship and bond with my mom. For the rest of my character to unfold, one will have to watch the show," smiles the actor who is having a fun time shooting with such veteran actors.
Simple was last seen in Twinkle Beauty Parlour and has also been doing a couple of cameos of late. She has also recently completed the 13 episode TV series in Dubai titled Barsaat Ki Ek Raat. The actor might also be called to Dubai for an interview (in November) along with Vikas Bhalla to be a part of renowned chat show.
On the personal front, Simple for now is waiting to shift into her newly rented apartment as and when she can manage some time out of her busy schedule.

So with positive and negative roles coming her way, now we think the actor should feel complete with another comic role in hand.

Tere mere beach mein...

Manoje Biddvai and Ravee Gupta gear up for their beach wedding in Goa on December 17

Reena Thapar Kapoor

It's official. Love birds Manoje Biddvai and Ravee Gupta are finally ready to tie the knot on December 17. "Our parents have decided that we get married on December 17 in Goa," informs Manoje. The groom-to-be is looking forward to it. "We didn't want to get married in the run-of-the-mill manner. A beach wedding in Goa would be really most romantic. Our respective families are in the process of finalising the details of our wedding." While the arrangements for the wedding are on in full swing, career-wise too, things are getting better for Manoje.

Manoje is quite kicked about his catholic wedding. "The credit for coming up with an innovative idea like this goes to Ravee," he adds. The couple have roped in their friend who has taken the responsibility of designing their wedding outfits. We asked the Manoje if he is getting the pre-wedding jitters. "You bet," he smiles.

After being replaced in one of the popular shows on television, the guy is finally getting out of the 'Abeer' image. "Let bygones be bygones. I've been receiving loads of offers. But I'm going to be extra cautious before I take up assignments," he says.

New entrant brightens up Aisa Des Hai Mera

Yet another entrant on the sets of Manish Goswami's Aisa Des Hai Mera on Sony TV is the endearing Simple Kaul. After acting in a number of soaps, she returns with a new show. She plays the role of Simi, who is a bubbly, chirpy, daughter of Pawan Malhotra and Kiron Kher. The serial focuses on the relationship between the mother and daughter and the special bond they share.

No wonder Simple seems so exhilarated about this show especially since she is working closely with the brilliant Kiron Kher. "Everyone is so chilled out and comfortable to work with. I have a good rapport with everyone, especially Jitu Arora, who is fantastic and fun to shoot with. Pawan and Kironji are just so brilliant, they just motivate each other to perform their best," she says.

The actress believes that there can be nothing better than working with a production team like Siddhanth Cinevision who have been associated with popular shows such as Kitty Party, Sarrkkar, Aashirvaad, Parampara, Daraar and the ongoing Kittu Sab Janti Hai

Star of the week

Actress Gunjan Walia will be seen in a lead role for the first time in the Sahara serial Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye. She is pretty ecstatic about the role which she says is quite promising unlike many other run-of-the-mill shows seen on the tube these days.

What's your role in Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye?
I'm playing the protagonist Krishna. She is the daughter-in-law of the house. Vikram Gokhle is playing my father-in-law. In many ways, both their lives are similar. She has been abandoned by her husband, while Vikramji is being abandoned by his sons and daughters. Vikramji has accepted Krishna as his daughter. She is the only link left in the family as he still hopes for a family re-union. Krishna maybe sad, but never shows her true emotions in front of anyone.

How's this story different from the other soaps?
First of all, it's not a saas-bahu drama. It makes the audience sit up and think. In today's developed society too, people still don't consider their daughter-in-law as a daughter.

Let's talk about your previous assignments.
I have worked in Sindoor and Kesar. Then I did a parallel lead role in Aisa Des Hai Mera. I even hosted a kids' show on Hungama TV which was my first assignment.

How did you bag the lead role in Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye?
I got a call from the production house. My audition which went pretty well. It was unexpected for me because Krishna is a quiet girl whereas I am very bubbly in real life and I thought I would never get selected. The only thing which matches between Krishna and me is the love and affection we have towards other human beings. It is a real challenge for me to play a character which is not my real self.

Tell us about your experience working with your co-stars.
They all are wonderful and great people. Especially Chaitanya and Vikram Ghokhle are fantastic to work with. They are always there to help me out.

Can you tell us something about your background?
I come from a small city in Punjab, called Phagwara. It is between Jalandhar and Ludhiana. I did my schooling and college from Jalandhar. During those days, I was always associated with theatre activities. I even anchored a show in Punjab, which was aired on Lashkara channel. In Delhi, I saw an ad in the newspaper for the post of an airhostess. I was lucky to be chosen and was sent to Mumbai for training.

In Mumbai, on a day off, I was seated with my friends at Caf Coffee day, when we came to know about some auditioning going on at Balaji Telefilms. I thought about giving it a try. I was luckily selected by Balaji for hosting a show on Hungama. And that's how my acting career began.

How has your life changed after taking on a daily?
It hasn't changed much as after doing so much of work; I have become used to the daily schedules. In fact I enjoy it, as I can never sit idle. When I was flying, even then I didn't have time to waste since my schedule was hectic.

Are you working on any other project?
At the moment, I just want to concentrate on this show. I will decide after it's launched on November 14. Until then, I am just waiting and hoping that my new flight would be a good one.

Shows on Sahara aren't doing well compared to its competitive channels. Are you a little apprehensive?
Not at all. It's a totally new product that we are launching. Besides that, Wo Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki and Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai are doing quite well. (Sampurn)
