Mahrru Shaikh loves playing a glam mom

First modelling came her way on a platter and when all was going well acting offers also came her way without asking. While she was flying with British Airways she dabbled in modelling. Her modelling career took off so well right with her first campaign for Pears that Mahrru Shaikh decided to pursue modelling as a hobby.
But since the airline didn't allow her to continue with modelling she quit the job and joined Saudia. Thus flying and modelling went hand-in-hand with ad campaigns like Aquafresh, Lifeboy Gold, Zero B and Chiclets for which she wore a swimming costume. A popular face in ads she got an offer from Sony to anchor BSA Star Ki Pasand.
Soon she got tired of flying and decided to quit her job as an airhostess as her acting career took off with serials like Parivartan, Aurat and Hindustani where she played glamorous characters. But the transition to mother's roles happened with Yeh Nazdikiyan.
"The channel and production house convinced me to play a mother. The character was a take-off on Shobhaa De and it was the main lead. I didn't regret playing the role because it was a well-rounded character but unfortunately I got slotted in mother's roles," says Mahrru who is however, happy playing a glamorous mother on television. "Despite playing a character of my age in B. R. Film's Aurat they offered me a mother's role in Dushman."
"Actors don't have much choice. They have to go by the channel's call," adds Mahrru who plays Karun's mother in Kabhi To Nazar Milao. "Like all mothers she is upset with the fact that her son is in love with a blind girl. But when she realises that Sunaina will become her son's strength she starts supporting her son. It's an emotional love story and my character is etched out very well. In fact, all the characters are well structured and that's what really matters." She is equally happy with her role in Aisa Des Hai Mera. But Mahrru agrees that in a daily soap anything can happen as stories are sent for a toss and characters get sidetracked completely.
She feels disheartened when stories are skewed and her role is sidetracked. Like it happened with her in Jassi and Millee. "I had a good role in Jassi as Arman's mother. But later the serial went off-track and my character went out of focus completely," says Mahrru who was equally disappointed with her role in Millee. "I had a my own story and a beautiful track. But they messed it up, made the serial into a kid's show and cheated the audience."
In daily soaps, according to Mahrru, tracks tend to change quickly. "That's something actors don't have a control over. When more than the story, fashion and looks taking over and channels insist that actors should be presentable, anything can happen," she laughs. "In the earlier days serials were realistic and there were no plastic surgeries ," she adds.
