Chapter 3
“Akshu! How was the party?”, Mimi asked as soon as Akshara entered the house.
“The party just started Mimi. I was having a headache so I came back home.”
Mimi hugged her and Akshara dropped her head on her shoulder. “Kya hua Akshu?”
“Kuch nahi Mimi. I just want to go to bed.”
Manish and Swarna saw Akshara with Mimi and came down immediately.
“Congratulations Akshu!”
“Thank you badi mummy.”
“Congratulations, beta”, Manish said patting her on her head.
“Thank you bade papa”
“I’m so proud of both of you. You’ve worked really hard for this.”
Akshara smiled tiredly. “Thank you so much. I’m going to my room now. I’ve asked the driver to go and pick up Aaru after an hour.”
Mimi waited for Akshara to leave before turning to Manish.
“She looks upset about something.”
“Yes maa, I noticed too. I’ll ask Aarohi when she comes back from the party. Don’t worry.”
**
Abhimanyu sent the children back to their ward and went back to the party. He had to admit that it was a good party. He knew that Akshara had arranged everything and he decided to go and annoy her by giving an offhanded compliment about it.
He looked around to see where she was but couldn’t find her anywhere. People kept walking up to him to congratulate him and he thanked them warmly.
He found Aarohi and Neil in a corner and walked up to them.
“Are you guys having a good time?”
“Bhai! Congratulations. You really deserve this. I’m so happy for you and everyone at the hospital”, Neil gushed happily.
Abhimanyu smiled and said, “Thank you, Neil. It was a team effort and everyone worked really hard.”
“Team effort!”, Aarohi muttered sarcastically.
“Did you say something Ms. Goenka?”, Abhimanyu asked looking at Aarohi who looked upset for some reason.
“No, Sir.”
“I wanted to thank you for all your work Ms. Goenka. You’ve been doing really well. I’m glad that you’re a part of my team.”
Abhimanyu had seen the efforts that Aarohi had put in and he wanted her to know that he appreciated it. He expected her to be happy to hear it but she frowned and looked away before looking at him again and murmured a “thank you”
“Are you alright, Ms. Goenka?”
“I’m fine Sir.”
Abhimanyu didn’t push it further but he could see that she was not fine. But Neil was with her and Abhimanyu felt that he could deal with whatever it was.
He looked around again before asking, “Where’s your sister? I wanted to thank her for organizing this party.”
“I’ll let her know that you thanked her, Sir.”
Abhimanyu gave her a nod but something felt off. He didn’t know what was wrong but he felt like it was related to him.
“Abhimanyu!”
He turned to find Mahima and Anand calling him to join them.
“Enjoy the party. I’m going to go and talk to Taiji and Tauji”, he told Neil and Aarohi.
Abhimanyu observed that Mahima and Anand were upset about something.
“What happened?”, he asked.
“Abhimanyu, why didn’t you thank Harsh in your speech? You mentioned everyone else! Why would you do that?”, Mahima asked.
“I thanked everyone that contributed to the hospital’s success Taiji.”
“And do you think Harsh and Akshara didn’t contribute to our success?”, Anand interjected.
“Akshara?”, Abhimanyu asked in confusion.
“Do you see Harsh anywhere? Do you see Akshara around? They left Abhimanyu! You failed to mention them and you could have just acknowledged the management team or the PR team but you didn’t.”
That couldn’t be right. Akshara was used to his taunts about her work and she always gave him hell for it. It was their thing. That’s what they did. He enjoyed bickering with her and he always felt that she enjoyed it too.
He had never appreciated PR work and nobody could convince him to give it any kind of importance. It was all about image building. PR guys could create a false perception and fictitious impression and feed it to the public to make it believable.
“Akshara is too confident about her work to get upset about me mentioning or not mentioning her in my speech. She wouldn’t care either way. If she’s not here then it has nothing to do with me”, Abhimanyu said confidently.
“And sir ki baat kare toh he must be on cloud nine. This is the kind of moment he lives for. He must be already planning the news headlines for the next few days. Every news broadcaster, every newspaper and every magazine is going to have only one subject in coming days and it’s Birla Hospital. So, please don’t tell me that Sir is sad about his son not mentioning his name and is sitting at home, depressed and miserable.”
Anand frowned at his words. “You treat everyone equally at the hospital. Senior doctors are no different from nurses or ward boys for you because you know that it takes collective effort for the hospital to run smoothly. Everyone is a critical resource. So, I’m not able to understand why you’re so irrational in your dislike for PR. We cannot function without them Abhimanyu and if you stop viewing them with your unfair outlook then you’ll see the hard work that they do.”
Abhimanyu rubbed his eyes with his palm and looked annoyed. “I’m not going to lie and praise them just to feed Sir’s ego. I can’t do that. I’m going to get something to drink. Do you want something?”, he asked trying to get away from there.
Mahima and Anand shook their heads and Abhimanyu walked away. He went out of the main door and looked at the parking lot. Akshara’s car was missing.
Did she really leave because she was hurt by his speech? He didn’t know but he did know that he had never seen her leave early like this. She enjoyed these parties a lot and he often found himself staying late just to see her dance or do her silly antics.
He felt uncomfortable from taiji and tauji’s words. Aarohi’s actions also indicated that she was angry with him. He didn’t care for his father’s sorrow. His father deserved this and so much more but he didn’t want Akshara to be mad at him. It was never his intention to upset her. She was always so confident and assertive and she was so sure of herself that he never thought that anything could unsettle her or shake her confidence in herself.
He took out his phone and scrolled through his contacts and his finger lingered over her name. But what would he say?
He put his phone away and decided to leave. He didn’t want to stay anymore. He got onto his bike and put on his helmet. He needed some air so he drove around trying to clear his mind.
It was really late by the time he reached home. He got into the house and saw that the lights were turned on in his father’s office. He was used to seeing his father work till late into the night but today he felt uneasy.
He shook his head and ran up the stairs. After everything that his father did, why was he feeling guilty for what happened today? He went inside his room and shut the door. He rubbed his forehead and felt tense and anxious.
He decided to deal with this tomorrow. If Akshara was really upset about today then he would explain everything to her. Even if she didn’t get his reasons, she would at least understand that he didn’t do it to be spiteful.
**
Abhimanyu walked into Birla Hospital the next day and was surprised to see his father’s office closed and the lights turned off. He didn’t remember the last time this had happened. Harsh Birla was always at his desk and for the past year, Akshara Goenka was as prompt as his father and he was used to seeing them first thing in the morning.
He took his phone and called the head of staff. “I haven’t received my schedule yet. Can you ask Ms. Akshara Goenka to give it to me?”
He ended the call and went to his office.
Meanwhile Akshara was on the other side of the hospital with Harsh Birla. “Sir, everything is ready for the press conference.”
“Do you have the presentation? Also, did you share the statements with bhai saab and Abhimanyu?”
“Yes, Sir. The presentation is ready. I’ll go and give the statements that I’ve prepared to Dr. Anand Birla and Dr. Abhimanyu Birla.”
Just as Harsh was about to respond, the head of staff came there and informed Akshara that Abhimanyu was asking for his schedule.
Harsh looked at Akshara and said, “Why don’t you go and give him his schedule as well as the statement?”
Akshara agreed and left. She could see that Harsh was tired and there were dark circles under his eyes. She wondered if he got any sleep last night. Perhaps, he couldn’t sleep like her. She had tossed and turned for a long time. Even after Aarohi came back home, Akshara had pretended to sleep. She didn’t want to talk to anyone. Was she overreacting? Most probably. But she couldn’t help it. She had tried to forget and move on from the incident, but she couldn’t. Not yet anyways.
She reached Abhimanyu’s office and knocked on his door.
“Come in”
“This is your schedule for today”, she handed the schedule to Abhimanyu.
She looked at him and realized that he was looking at her instead of looking at the schedule. Was that concern on his face? Before she could decipher his expression, he looked at the papers that she placed on his desk and pulled them towards himself.
“Why is nothing scheduled in the first half of the day?”, he asked.
“We have a press conference in an hour.”
Abhimanyu tried to control his temper. He had already decided that he wouldn’t say anything hurtful to her today. He wanted to set things right but how could he let her mess his schedule this way? She had cleared his appointments in the morning for a damn press meet.
“Did you check with me before clearing my schedule?”, he asked sharply.
“Harsh Sir said he’ll talk to you about it at the party. Didn’t he discuss this with you?”
Abhimanyu bit back a curse. His father was apparently offended by his speech last night so he must have left without talking to him.
“No, he didn’t.”
Akshara kept quiet and Abhimanyu shifted the schedule paper to check the other papers.
“What’s this?”
“That’s your statement for the press conference.”
Abhimanyu scoffed and pushed the statement towards her. “I don’t need it. I know what to say.”
Akshara was not surprised. It was difficult to make him agree to anything when it came to press meets.
“There will be print and electronic media. It’s always better to stick to a prepared speech rather than giving an impromptu speech. At least use the statement that I’ve written for reference if you want to give your own statement.”
He pulled her written statement towards him again and went through it. “Why would I thank the media for coming to the press meet? They will be here even if we ask them not to come. They’re blood thirty that way. “
Akshara was losing her patience with him and she would have reacted by now but she didn’t want to anymore. Not today or in the future. She would keep it strictly professional. If he wanted to mess it up then she wouldn’t stop him. He didn’t deserve her help.
“It’s basic courtesy to welcome the media to the press conference”, she said robotically.
“Thanks for writing this but I don’t need it.”
Akshara took the statement away.
“Who else is going to talk?”, he asked.
“Dr. Anand Birla and Dr. Harsh Birla”
“Why is Mr. Harsh Birla included in this? What is he going to talk about? And why is Dr. Mahima Birla not going to speak? Do you know the kind of work that she has done?”
Akshara just stared at him for a few seconds unable to say anything. “The media only knows Harsh Sir because he represents Birla Hospital in every interaction with the media. So, it’s important for him to speak. We wanted to keep it short so only you, Anand Sir and Harsh Sir were included. I can talk to Mahima ma’am and include her too.”
“Exclude me and add Mahima instead. I’ll talk to her.”
Akshara turned around to find Harsh standing at the door.
“But Sir-“
“No, he’s right. I’m not important. Our top doctors can speak.”
Akshara couldn’t believe that this was actually happening. The man whose entire life revolved around the hospital was stepping back.
She got up from her seat and went to Harsh.
“Sir, all four of you can speak. We can keep the statements short.”
Harsh shook his head and said, “Let’s do this Abhimanyu’s way.”
Before she could say anything further, Harsh left and she felt a lump form in her throat. She didn’t want to stay in that office any longer.
“I need to go and check the arrangements”, she muttered.
“Wait!”, he said.
Akshara stopped but she didn’t turn around. She couldn’t. She was too upset and she was on the verge of tearing into him for his callous behavior.
He stood close to her but he didn’t know what to say. He could see that she didn’t like what had just happened but he couldn’t explain much without revealing the whole past.
“I know that you look up to my father and you didn’t like what happened just now. But you’re just seeing one side of things. There’s a whole different side that’s not known to you.”
“I need to go. I don’t want to know anything and you don’t have to explain anything tome”, she whispered.
“No wait!”, he stopped her again.
“About last night. I didn’t mean to hurt you. It was not intentional.”
Akshara turned around and found him too close for comfort. She took a step back and her back hit the door.
“Last night, I realized that your taunts, your insults are all real and what happens between us is not playful banter. You have absolutely no respect for my work and I respect myself too much to let this go. I’m not going to sit and explain to you what I do or make you realize my worth. You can continue to think less of me and it doesn’t matter to me at all.”
Abhimanyu was about to step closer when she stopped him. “You will not get into my personal space and you’ll not touch me again. I do not report to you and I have no direct work with you so we don’t even have to look at each other anymore. I will work in the other wing from tomorrow.”
She walked out of the room and Abhimanyu hit his fist against the wall. She didn’t even bother to listen to him! And what did she mean by we don’t have to see each other anymore? Why was she making this such a big deal? He was even ready to explain everything to her but she was so damn stubborn!
“Abhimanyu? Are you okay?”
Abhimanyu looked at the door to see Mahima standing there.
“Yes, Taiji. I’m fine.”
“Harsh told me that he wants me to speak. I just wrote down something quickly. Maybe Akshara can help me fix it if there’s anything wrong.”
He didn’t want to hear her name right now.
“I’m sure you must have written a perfect speech taiji. There’s no need to fix it. Let’s just go and get it over with.”
They walked together to the press conference which was arranged on the ground floor. The media was already there and the staff was serving them refreshments. Akshara was getting the presentation ready and Anand Birla was sitting on the podium. He gestured for Abhimanyu and Mahima to join him and they went up the stage to sit on either side of him.
Abhimanyu looked at Akshara who was still working on the projector and he felt his temper rise when he thought of her words. He sat through the presentation and later watched Anand and Mahima give their speeches before it was his turn to speak.
Akshara saw him fuming and she knew that his mind was elsewhere. She watched him adjust the mike and speak.
“Dr. Anand Birla and Dr. Mahima Birla have covered everything. There’s nothing for me to add here.”
Akshara could have hit her head if she didn’t know that every move was being captured by the media.
There were a lot of murmurs and whispers from the media.
“Dr. Abhimanyu Birla, this is a very prestigious award so don’t you have anything to say? Your family owns this hospital and you’re an integral part of it”, someone from the media said.
“We had a small gathering in our hospital yesterday and I said whatever I had to say there. I need to go now. Thank you.”
Akshara gasped as he walked away and she looked around for Harsh but couldn’t find him anywhere. She went up the stage and took the mike. “Dr. Abhimanyu Birla had an emergency so he had to leave. Dr. Anand Birla and Dr. Mahima Birla would be happy to answer all the questions that you have”, she said and looked at Anand and Mahima who nodded.
A few hours later, Akshara sat down to have some chai with Aarohi.
“It was a disaster.”
Aarohi rubbed her shoulder in sympathy. “Harsh Sir would have stopped him. He should have been there. He knows how Abhimanyu Sir is.”
Akshara shook her head. “Why would he be there? Abhimanyu asked him not to speak on stage. He did the right thing by leaving.”
“What’s going to happen now?”
Akshara shrugged. “I have no idea. We’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s headlines to know.”
**
Akshara smiled as Swarna applied oil to her head. She enjoyed these massages a lot.
“Thank you badi mummy. There’s magic in your hands.”
“You girls work so hard. It’s very important to relax and enjoy also.”
“You’re absolutely right.”
Manish peeped into the room and gestured to Swarna. She put a finger to her lips and asked him to leave.
“Akshu, I wanted to talk to you about something important.”
“Ha badimummy boliye na.”
“Remember, your bade papa talked about a Rishta the other day.”
Akshara frowned and thought that her badi mummy had managed to capture her. She couldn’t escape and she was enjoying the maalish too much to leave now.
“badimummy pleaseee”
“Just listen to what I have to say. You’ve been working for a year now and you’ve settled in your job. Don’t you think it’s time to think about your personal life now?”
Akshara kept quiet and waited for Swarna to continue.
“Everybody needs a supportive partner in their life. You can discuss your goals and ambitions with him. You can tell him about your day and he’ll be your sounding board where you can share anything and everything. It will be wonderful Akshu.”
Akshara had seen Aarohi with Neil and knew that it was great to be equal partners. They shared everything together and planned everything together. Akshara knew that she wanted that. But did she want that right now?
“You don’t have to decide anything right away. Just talk to the guy and see if your ideas match and your thoughts match or not.”
It’s time to grow up and be an adult about this, Akshara decided. She thought of Abhimanyu for a fleeting second and her heart hurt. She could never imagine sharing anything with him and she knew that he would never reveal his secrets to her. He was closed off and distant and she didn’t want her life partner to be like that.
“Okay badi mummy. I’ll talk to him.”
“Akshu! That’s great! I’ll tell your bade papa and he’ll take it forward. I’m so happy for you!”, Swarna hugged her and Akshara smiled at her enthusiasm.
So, that was Chapter3. Did you guys like it? So much happened again 😆 So, please share your thoughts.
