Chapter 1
Abhimanyu Birla walked into Birla Hospital and smiled when a group of interns wished him a Good Morning. He walked past the buzzing General Ward and took a left to enter the left wing which housed all the offices of the doctors and the Board of Directors.
He was just about to cross his fatherâs office when he heard the unmistakable sound that made him pause. It was her, of course. The girl who had become a pain to deal with. He turned towards the room and saw his father, Harsh Birla with the bane of his existence, Akshara Goenka.
It looked like they were discussing something important and he had no doubt it was either about increasing the revenue at Birla Hospital or about keeping Birla Hospital in the news. Harsh Birla managed the hospital as well as PR activities and Abhimanyu always found his methods distasteful. Now this girl had joined his father and they were like two peas in a pod with similar ideology and similar passion to excel by making lots of money.
Abhimanyu continued to walk down the hallway and opened the door to his office. He was just settling in when a tentative knock made him look up.
âMay I come in Sir?â
Abhimanyu nodded at Aarohi Goenka, who was an intern at Birla Hospital. âPlease come in Ms. Goenka.â
âSir, this is your schedule for today. Akshu made a few changes and she asked you to have a look.â
Abhimanyu narrowed his eyes at Aarohi. âI mean Akshara, Sir.â
âMs. Goenka, please help me remember something. Did I appoint you as my secretary? Or did I ask you to give me my schedule or my coffee or the dayâs newspaper?â
Aarohi blinked at him nervously. âNo Sir.â
âThen why would you do this?â
âAkshu..I mean Akshara was in a hurry so she asked me to give this to you. I was anyway coming to your office to discuss the first surgery for today since Iâll be assisting you.â
Abhimanyu shook his head and joined his hands on top of his desk. âAre you saying Ms. Goenka that PR guys are busier than us doctors? You seem to have a lot of free time on your hand Ms. Goenka. Perhaps, I need to take away the one day off that you get every month.â
Aarohiâs eyes widened in horror. âI have no free time at all Sir. Iâm sorry for bringing the schedule to you. Iâll ask Akshara to get it to you Sir.â
She hurried out of the room and Abhimanyu smiled and relaxed in his chair. It was always fun to scare the interns and he got an extra kick out of scaring Ms. Aarohi Goenka because it had a direct effect on a certain other Goenka.
He heard her marching down the hallway and hid his smile. It was going to be an interesting morning.
Akshara Goenka had had enough of this manâs attitude. What did he think of himself? She barged into his office and shoved the schedule on his desk. She watched him raise an eyebrow and watch her intently.
âStop harassing my sister, Mr. Abhimanyu Birla. This is your schedule for today. If you have any issues with it then Iâm right here to address them.â
She took a seat and waited for him to check the schedule.
âIâm not going to change my schedule for a high-profile patient just to meet the needs of PR and aid you and my dad in making headlines.â
Akshara huffed in annoyance and muttered something under her breath before speaking. âEverything is not about PR. We got a call from the ministerâs office that his condition is deteriorating and thatâs why I scheduled his operation in the first half today.â
Abhimanyu smirked and said, âAre you trying to tell me that you and dad are not going to take advantage of this situation and all new channels will not be broadcasting news of the ministerâs surgery at Birla Hospital in the evening news?â
Akshara stood and bent forward ready to lash out at him. âLook! I donât care what your issues are with me-â
She was interrupted by Dr. Anand Birla who rolled his eyes when he saw Abhimanyu and Akshara in combat mode.
âEnough you two. We have the minister ready for his surgery and Abhi everybody is waiting for you. Please continue this during the lunch hour.â
Akshara took a step back and Abhimanyu got up from his chair. Anand left the room and Abhimanyu walked around his desk ready to change into his scrubs. He grabbed everything he needed and looked in surprise at Akshara who still standing in his office.
âI donât mindâ, he said before taking his shirt off and heard her gasp from behind.
Akshara whirled around and left the office banging the door shut. She could swear she heard him laugh and it flustered her to no end.
âIll-mannered Bruteâ, she muttered and walked towards the lobby only to bump into her sister who was already in her scrubs.
âDid you fight with him again?â, Aarohi asked and Akshu made a face. âDonât worry about it. All the best for your surgery! Do wellâ, she said and hugged her. Aarohi hugged her back but didnât let the topic end.
âBol Akshu. Ab kya kiya tu ne?â
âKuch nahi kiya maine. That sadu has only one aim in life and that is to torture me. Akdu kahikaâ
âI heard thatâ, Abhimanyu exclaimed startling Akshara and Aarohi.
âYou need to hurry Ms. Goenka if you have any intentions of assisting meâ, he said to Aarohi but his eyes were boring holes in Akshara who refused to back away from the stare down. She narrowed her eyes at him and he smiled before looking away.
âFind something useful to doâ, he suggested before walking away.
âIâm going to kill himâ, Akshara said raising her hand, but Aarohi stopped her. âStop it Akshu. He just says stuff to provoke you. Chalo bye, I donât want to be late.â
âBye and all the best.â
**
Aarohi looked at her phone again and sighed. Akshara glanced at her sister in concern.
âHe hasnât called you back yet, has he?â, she asked.
âNoâ, Aarohi replied morosely.
âDonât worry Aaru. Heâs just upset. Heâll get over it soon.â
Aarohiâs eyes teared up and she looked away to hide her eyes from Akshara. âHe has never stayed mad at me for so longâ, she said softly.
Akshara who was driving them both home frowned when sheheard the hitch in his sisterâs voice. She was very protective of Aarohi and didnât like the sadness in Aarohiâs tone. Akshara was used to being the pillar of strength and their family was well aware of the special bond that Akshara and Aarohi shared. They were joined at the hip but couldnât be more different. Akshara was the outspoken one who didnât hesitate to put her views forward. She was outgoing, confident, and always ready to help people in need. Aarohi was the quiet one. She was studious and passionate about her work. She adored Akshara and shared everything with her.
They reached home and Akshara parked the car. âAaru, are you okay?â
Aarohi looked up and smiled. âHa. Iâm fine. Chalo, letâs go inside.â
They entered the house and found Bade papa, Badi mummy and Mimi sitting in the living room.
âHow was your day?â, Mimi asked as soon as she saw the girls.
The girls murmured âFineâ and sat down with a sigh.
âWhat did that khadoos do today?â, Badi mummy asked looking at Bade papa who smiled and shook his head.
âDonât even ask Badi mummy! He was so rude to Aaru! I went and told him offâ, Akshara replied getting angry all over again thinking about that obnoxious man.
âSheâs going to get us both fired very soonâ, Aarohi said but she smiled fondly at Akshara.
âWhy would they fire us? Weâre both great at what we do!â
Manish looked at Aarohi and Akshara and casually said, âWell now that you both are here, I want to tell you girls something. My friend Ramesh called today and said that his grandson is back from US. Heâs done his Masters there and is opening his own IT firm here.â
Akshara glanced at Aarohi who looked at her and gestured her to do something. âAahâ, Akshara exclaimed and clutched her leg. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. I think I have a cramp. Aaru take me to the room. I think I need some rest.â
Aarohi helped Akshara get up and they both wobbled up the stairs to their room. Once inside, Aarohi took a deep breath. âBade papa is so sly in bringing up these Rishta topics, right?â
Akshara fell on the bed and started laughing. âHeâs so smart. He starts the topic when we least expect it.â
Meanwhile, Manish was upset with the girls. âDid you see that maa? Whenever I bring up the shaadi topic they make some excuse to run away.â
Mimi smiled and said, âHow long will they run and how far will they run? Theyâre doing their dream job so they can focus on their personal lives now. Donât worry these things happen naturally. Theyâll be ready for marriage very soon.â
**
Akshara frowned at her phone and looked at Aarohi was staring out of the window silently. Akshara had tried calling him too and looking at the way the fight was moving, she was worried. She didnât want Aarohi to suffer and she couldnât see her upset like this.
She decided to do something about it. She got up and went to change her clothes. She took her car keys and went to Aarohi. âChal Aaruâ
Aarohi looked at her watch and looked at her sister. âItâs 10:30 in the night. Where are we going at this time?â
âWeâre going to his house. I canât see you like this. Letâs end this stupid fight of yours.â
Aarohi gaped at her. âWe canât go to his house Akshu and we definitely canât go to his house at this time!â
âYou can either come with me or Iâll go alone and sort it out.â
Aarohi knew that her sister was crazy enough to go alone. âNo, Iâll go with you. If something goes wrong, Iâll at least try to fix it. If you go alone then youâll start World War III there.â
Akshara rolled her eyes and sat down to wait for Aarohi to get ready. Then they quietly crept down the stairs and went out. Akshara started the car and backed out while Aarohi watched the house to see if anyone woke up.
They drove through the deserted streets and reached their destination in 20 minutes. Akshara parked the car outside the gate and started to get out.
âAkshu wait. Letâs try calling again.â
Akshu shook her head. âWeâve been calling since morning. We need to fix this face to face.â
They both got out of the car and walked to the gate. They went inside and looked at the beautiful house. It was silent and dark.
âHow do we climb the wall?â, Aarohi whispered.
âI called Nishtha she said sheâll open the door for usâ,Akshara whispered back.
The main door opened slowly and the sisters rushed inside. âThank you Nishthaâ, Akshara whispered.
âYouâre welcome. Neil bhaiyyaâs room in on the first floor. The first door on the left. Okay?â
Akshara showed her a thumbs up and held Aarohiâs hand. She gestured her to follow and they both quietly went up the stairs. They reached Neilâs door and Akshara asked Aarohi to go in.
Aarohi shook her head nervously. âWhat are you nervous about? This is going to be your room in the future. Just go insideâ, Akshara pushed her inside and shut the door. She looked around at the dark corridor and gulped nervously. She had to wait for Aarohi but she didnât know where to wait without drawing attention.
She heard a door opening and quickly went down on her knees. She crawled towards the stairwell and prayed that she doesnât get caught. It was too dark for her to make out the way but she decided to stick to the path. She could end up falling down the stairs this way but she was willing to take the risk. She was still crawling trying to get away when the lights turned on and she blinked in surprise. Her vision cleared and she found herself staring at a pair of feet. She slowly looked up and as luck would have it, it was the last person on Earth that she ever wanted to see. She was on her knees in front of the man who made her work life hell. Abhimanyu Birla.
She stood hesitantly and waited for him to start interrogating her. He stood staring at her and she didnât know what to do or what to say. He looked like he just got out of bed and his eyes were still sleepy. He took a step to stand closer to her and raised his hand. He looked mesmerized by what he was seeing. Akshara watched in shock as brought his hand close to her face in touching distance. She froze on the spot. He was just about to cup her face when she snapped out of it and took a step back. Abhimanyu seemed to get out of his stupor and he quickly lowered his hand.
âAre you actually in my house? What are you doing here?â, he asked
âShhâ, Akshara gestured him to lower his voice. âWhy are you shouting?â, she whispered.
Abhimanyu grabbed her arm and pulled her into his room. The door closed and Akshara stood against the wall beside the closed door and stared at the masculine room that belonged to this man. This felt too intimate. Abhimanyu closed the distance between them and she could feel his breath on her face.
âWhat are you doing here, Akshara?â, he asked and it jolted her. He had never called her just Akshara. She was Ms. Goenka or Akshara Goenka for him. She stared into his eyes and for the first time in her life, she felt speechless. Her heart was racing, and she was breathing hard.
âI need to leaveâ, she said and turned to leave. Abhimanyu blocked the door and she could feel his heat against her back. Why was he standing so close to her, she wondered.
âAkshara turn around.â
Hope you all like it! So, as you've already figured it out, Akshara worked with Harsh in PR. I know đ the irony đ And Akshara and Aarohi are super close and friendly as sisters should be. Also, Neil is Aarohi's boyfriend. Rest will be unveiled slowly. đ
