Chapter 28

"And the baby?" Mahima asked.

Everyone stopped celebrating and looked at the two doctors. Abhi got up from the floor. He was so occupied with praying for Akshu, he forgot all about his baby.

The two doctors looked at each other. "Please, tell me! How is my baby?" Abhi said to them tearfully. Yes, he wanted to save Akshu before anything else but he couldn't imagine anything happening to his baby either.

"Dr. Abhimanyu...." Dr. Gupta began.

"Please! Please tell me the baby is okay." Abhi begged them.

"Dr. Abhimanyu, please relax. Your baby is fine. Both your wife and the baby are fighters and fought hard. They are both fine. Akshara is being shifted to her room. She will gain consciousness in a few hours and you can see her then. The nurse will bring the baby out soon." Dr. Gupta smiled at Abhi. Abhi hugged the doctor.

"But is it a girl or boy?" Neil asked.

"Mubarak ho, Dr. Abhimanyu. Aapko beti hui hai." Dr. Roy said to Abhi. Abhi stood there stunned as he watched a nurse come from behind the doctors holding a tiny little bundle. Everyone gasped in excitement.

The nurse walked up to Abhi and tried to hand the baby to him. Abhi looked at Manjiri. "Maa?"

"Apni beti ko lo." Manjiri smiled at him with tears in her eyes.

Abhimanyu very carefully took the baby from the nurse, scared of dropping her. He looked at her in disbelief. She was tinier than Abhi had imagined. Abhi carefully studied her. Her eyes were closed with her long eyelashes resting on her pink cheeks. She had the tiniest cutest button nose and rose-budded lips. There has never been a more beautiful baby.

"Kya hua, Abhi? Kaisi hai tumhari beti?" Manjiri asked her son as she watched him look at his daughter in complete awe.

"Maa! Yeh...yeh meri beti hai?"

"Haan. Tumhe beti chaiye thi na? Dekho, tumhari prathna puri hogai." Manjiri smiled as she took a look at her grand-daughter.

"Dekho maa. Yeh meri beti hai!" Abhi simply could not believe it. "Look at her!" Abhi grinned at everyone.

"Yeh kitni pyari hai!" Manjiri exclaimed.

"Thu thu thu! Hamari gudiya!" Mimi said.

"Yeh toh bilkul gudiya jaisi hai!" Shefali told everyone.

"What do you think, Abhi? Kaisi lagi tumhe tumhari beti?" Badi Mama smiled at him.

"She's perfect and so so beautiful. She's just like her Mumma. Choti si Akshu." Abhi could not take his eyes off her.

"Akhir tumhe tumhari choti Akshu mil gayi." Mahima laughed.

Abhi kissed her forehead lightly. Just then the baby yawned and moved her hand a little. Abhi gasped.

"Kya hua beta?" Manjiri asked worried.

"Maa aap ne dekha? My daughter just moved her hand and yawned. Kitni intelligent hai na?" Abhi said proudly. Everyone laughed.

"Yeh lo. Pehle ek Akshu ke peeche deewana tha ab choti Akshu bhi mil gayi isse deewana hone ke liye." Anand said laughing.

"Acha Abhi bohat ho gaya, ab mujhe meri poti ko doh." Manjiri tried to take the baby from him.

"Yeh meri beti hai." Abhi said turning around so Manjiri couldn't take her.

"Meri poti hai. We want to hold her too."

"No. I'm not giving her to anyone."

"Abhi yeh galat baat hai." Badi Mumma said.

"Fine, go wash your hands, wear a mask and use sanitizer first."

"Abhimanyu bilkul theek ke raha hai. Kitni choti hai baby. Jao haath do lo. Maine toh do liye...aur yeh raha mera sanitizer now mujhe meri poti doh." Harsh said going up to Abhi. Abhi had never known his dad to show affection but there was so much love in Harsh's eyes as he looked at the baby.

"Harsh main iss ghar ka bada hoon. Toh pehle hamari gudiya apney bade dada ke goodh mein aayegi." Anand pushed Harsh away.

"Iss logic se toh sab se badi main hoon. Toh pehle meri turn." Mimi said pushing Anand away.

The baby's lips quivered in her sleep. She looks just like my Akshu. "Excuse me! You guys are scaring my little angel." Abhi said moving away from everyone. "It's okay, meri jaan. Aap Papa ke paas ho aur Papa aapko kuch hone nahi denge. Aur Mumma ke paas bhi toh jaana hai na?" Abhi whispered to the baby, kissing her again. Abhi couldn't believe how much he already loved his daughter.

At the end, it was Abhi against the rest of the family and they all got a turn holding the baby and admiring her.

"Bohat hogaya. Meri beti pechle 15 minutes aur 24 seconds se tum logo ke paas hai. Mujhe meri beti do wapis." Abhi took the baby from Kairav. "Papa ki jaan."

"Abhi ko dekho toh?" Mahima smiled at Manjiri.

"Maa!" Abhi whispered loudly.

"Kya hua, bachi theek toh hai na?" Everyone rushed to Abhi.

"Look! She opened her eyes! Look at her little eyes....how clever is my daughter?" Abhi said excitedly.

"Aae Bhagwan!" Mahima shook her head.

"She looks just like Karthik, na?" Badi Mama asked Mimi.

"Haan. Main bhi yahi soch rahi thi."

"Sorry. Meri beti apni Mumma jaisi hai. Sab se pyari, sab se khoobsurat."

"Aur iski Mumma Karthik ki beti hai." Laughed Badi Mama.

"Haan lekin iski aankhan toh Abhi jaisi hai." Manjri examined the baby again.

"Sach maa?? Iski aankhan meri jaisi hai?"

Manjiri nodded smiling.

"Aap ne suna, meri jaan? Aapki aankhan Papa jaisi hai magar aap bilkul apni Mumma jaisi ho aur hum jayenge aapki Mumma se milne."

As Akshu was in the ICU for observation, the baby was not allowed there. Manjiri and Badi Maa promised Abhi to take very good care of her when Abhi was finally allowed to go see his Akshu. He felt his heart to be divided. He wanted to go see Akshu desperately but he didn't want to leave the baby either.

Abhi went to Akshu's room and found her to be sleeping still. He could see some bruises on her face and arms from the accident. He kissed her forehead and sat on a chair next to her bed. He took her hand in his and kissed it.

"Abhi..." Akshu slowly opened her eyes.

"Hi, Jaan. How are you feeling?"

"Abhi..." Akshu looked around the room and started to cry. "Hamara baby. Where is our baby?" She started to panic.

"It's okay, Jaan. Our baby is fine. Maa aur Badi Maa hain uske paas."

"Tum sach ke rahe ho na?"

"Haan, meri jaan. Tum relax karo. When you get shifted to a normal room, you can meet the baby. Wait, let me show you." Abhi took his phone out of his pocket and showed Akshu a picture.

Akshu took the phone from Abhi. "Abhi! Yeh hamara baby hain? Sach mein?" Akshu's eyes filled with tears.

"You can't tell? She looks just like you." Abhi kissed Akshu's cheek.

"She? Beti hai? Abhi, yeh hamari beti hai?" Akshu said half laughing, half crying.

"Maine toh pehle kaha tha beti hogi." He wiped Akshu's tears.

"Please. Mujhe milna hai. Main theek hoon. Please mujhe le jao meri beti ke paas." Akshu begged Abhi.

"Jaan. Please kuch wait karo. Phir toh hamesha woh tumhare paas rahegi na."

"Abhi, main puri zindagi maa ke liye tarsi hoon. Maa ke bina rahi hoon but now I don't have any strength to stay away from my daughter. Ek baar phirse mujhe chance mila hai ek maa-beti ke rishte mein bandhane mein. Aur wait nahi ho raha. Please Abhi." Akshu cried.

"Okay, okay. Relax. I'll talk to your doctor, okay?" Abhi left to talk to the doctor.

Akshu stared at her baby's picture on Abhi's phone. "Sorry baby, aapki Mumma aapke paas nahi hai magar aisa pehli aur akhri baar hoga. Aapki Mumma hamesha aapke paas rahegi."

Okay....if you thought Abhimanyu was crazy about Akshu, wait till you see how crazy he is about his Choti Akshu....

Talking about Choti Akshu, what to name her? Abhira is out...any other names? Akshu doesn't want any "Aksh" names and Abhi wants an "A" name....
