It may be the reality in homes to have an absent father as they are expected to either be just the breadwinner or be emotionally distant from the kids/household, but then who are we to blame? Viewers watch this out of sadistic pleasure, kids grow up in these homes, so no change

But what about the fathers that are present? The fathers that don't fit this stereotype. Namesake fathers is the reality in some houses but present fathers are also the reality in some houses.

It would've killed them to show Raman raising his kids independently but then how could Shagun stay in the loop for the constant Shagun v. Ishita comparison? And like you said - how could viewers relate to the show if they showed a decent father?

It's sad b/c we use the fact "xyz" is reality to justify these shows - it's not an excuse though and shouldn't be one. Just bc "xyz" exists doesn't make it write.

Since embarking on YHM - I've always wondered just the degree of psychological strain these common viewers consciously/subconsciously experience. Are people masocists enjoying watching others suffer or are they sadists seeing their perceptions of life on TV? I wish I could understand what release they get in shows like this b/c hell I watch TV for a break from real life - for something to take me away from my stress and calm me down, but that's apparently not why a majority of viewers in India watch TV.

The reality is people just watch what's thrown at them. The flashiest show with the most shock and awe sequences is what sells - hence the tremendous rise of Naagin.

Krishy and @charminggenie. .you know while you do have a point. .I noticed a clear cultural difference when i moved back to india last year after years abroad. .
Here.. the idea of a man supporting a woman. .be it in her career, or household chores or managing a baby ..even in educated, highly progressive households is seen as something tjhe the man actually doesn't have to do..but he still does...and when he does its meant to be either derided (ideally in a subtle / sarcastic manner to the woman of tjhe house) or applauded as if it's an achievement .. and 'what a nice guy you have found..'..I wish my husband/ partner wax like him...and then sneering behind the back..saying see poor cuckolded man.. he has no say in the house etc etc..
Nowhere have i genuinely seen man and woman take on equal responsibilities without the stereotypes being rubbed into the face..nowhere is it 'normal' for a guy to do what a woman does. .or 'share' her work. And therein lies the crux of why male leads get portrayed the waythey do..
Raman bhalla on good writing days is a huge abberation to this stereotyoe...he is more sensitive, caring, a doting emotional parent and family man. .stuff men are 'not expected to be'..sadly 7 30 pm yhm has no place for tracks focusing on that 😕🥱

And krishy. . Thank you for the rohit raman scene reference. Him taking rohit to office .. with feeding bottle and all...has to be one of my favs ... in the list of raman and kids scenes including ..rocking kshitija to sleep..plaiting ruhis hair and reading her a book to sleep...and Raman shravan scenes..esp the one where he wants to grow up soon😆

The single father narrative will get a booking around 10-11 PM because thats for the niche segment , earns less but with a online virtual audience.

Chemistry, habit because tv viewing is 7 days thing , it's mindless noise after a point..hence the takers. After a point the show runs on association which is when the makers downsize budgets , cut down on sets , money investments etc.
How many young teens or even adults will publicly confess they watch desi tv in a public gathering or discuss it like say GOT or heck Revenge , any mindless English show. Even if they watch desi tv , there is a degree of shame , hence they don't care, it's background noise .

I really wish YRF churned more serials..they were the only ones who came with good stories , shorter format and had universal appeal.

Oh yeah shock and awe, sells too.

Oh I can relate and how😆..even yest hubby caught me watching and looked at me with a 'really. .this crap again' expression..and he made one more comment which I can't share here..
But yeah there are days I want to hide under the bed for continuing to watch intermittently despite the crap being dished out..and no..outside of IF..not a soul knows of my 7 30 addiction. .though I am quite vocal about the English crime and drama shows I watch😆

Alas at 11 PM - Raman was the iconic ML of the recent batch of TV shows, and now where is he. He wasn't perfect back then or an ideal dad but was real and independent of the FL, and now who knows...😕

---

That's what gets me I think...the apathy or the acceptance of what's being given. Can't change so accept it?

But this may be a cultural thing...I'm not in India nor have I done more than visit so I can't be one to judge. It's just my mentality on issues appears to be strikingly different b/c I am from a place where people speak out over anything and everything...there's diversity in what's offered in the name of entertainment & so on. It's by no means perfect but just different which is why swallowing the pill of just acceptance is hard even though I'm generally a pretty apathetic person compared to my peers 😆

I at one point told my desi-origin friends here to watch YHM...luckily there were no takers or else I'd be judged so so badly right now 😕😆

I haven't read the article ... But we see always reference about TRP aunties ... Kinda stereotyping them.. Aren't we also some kinda trp ____ as we complain about the show, the tracks , male lead, female lead, the regressive content , spend hours in the forum discussing it 😆😆..but the fact of the matter is we're watching it.. Otherwise how would we know what's wrong with the show..then rejoice / vote for our jodis to win.. Just because we don't watch it on tv doesn't make us any less contributor to the whole genre of saas bahu saga we see prevalent on Indian Telly. And EK knows that .. She has perfected the formula of what sells .. And that's why even though her shows are crappy , they churn TRPs and moolah for the channels .. And the channels look the other way. The only channel who I feel has tried to break away from this saas bahu shackles is Sony but unfortunately they don't get the TRPs to support them commercially . So the blame lies in all of us.. As we're the consumers.. If we don't consume.. They would not dare the produce such regressive stuff . 😳

Oh snap - I told some friends back in the day to watch YHM and now I'm so dang grateful they didn't or else I'd be deemed many a things...

My family's actually developed a drinking game for SNS b/c of how ludicrous it was...group desi TV viewing on my house is like family game night...rest my parents just "watch" (while on their phone) to "stay connected" to India

And I love my crime shows - NCIS, Criminal Minds, Sherlock...my list of Western shows that I binge on just makes me smile 😳

Oh no I agree, Gan...as I have said before, we are the modern TRP viewers. Cerebral discussions and "goggle" viewing for regressive content - we, including myself, see what's wrong but watch under the name of lollipops or acting. But we did try to make our voice heard - only to be reminded that it doesn't matter - hence stop watching or "fall in line" with the masses. A bit sad, no?

I would love to watch Sony shows b/c they honestly sound good - but many YHM has burned me bad 😆

It is a great and illuminating read though Gan if you have time!

And that sums it up...
And thats why I don't buy the ..but then those are mindless shows and this one claims to be not..yhm could have stuck to its guns..I actually made a post about it long back. .it could have stayed that quirky, witty, at times dramatic, but a show with its heart in the right place. .but then the slot changed ...
And here was a churned sea of stereotypical shows. .right from the sautens fighting over a man.. (first track post slot change)...to the sudden supernatural. .heck even makers admitted they wanted to cash in on the popularity of the 'other 7 30 show' to mindless molestation and crime..stuff very common in another 9pm Hugh trp show. .
Honestly consumers are to blame ..high trp gainers at least in tjhe last 4 yrs that i have followed desi telly have all been hugely stereotypical.. and it was inevitable in the craze for trps yhm would transform track after track to find further 'resemblance' to those shows and thats exactly what happened. ... the moment demand demand for mindless nonsense increases that's what you will see albeit in different proportions even in what could have been a excellent product of its own writing...'public nahi dekhegi' .. and the fate is sealed🥱
