well i guess they're either playing an instrumental version of the track in the backround whilst they're recording, or they recorded the voice separately and mixed them using some software

How do you mix tracks? I'm using Audacity.

you'd need one which allows you to put audio files into separate tracks, i'm not sure if audacity lets you do that, Mihir can elaborate.. but you gotta make sure that when you're recording your singing, that you are singing along with the instrumental track, have that playing through your earphones... once you're down, it's just a matter of uploding the two audio files into the tracks, and synchronising the vocals with the instrumental.
