"Are you okay Meg? You don't look so good."
They had just finished dinner and were waiting for their desserts
when Michael noticed that Meg looked a little pale.
"My stomach kinda hurts. I think I'm gonna throw up. Maybe it was
that lobster I ate."
"Well, we should just go home then." suggested Veronica. "I'll ask
the waitress if we can cancel --"
"No, don't do that. I'll just take Meg home and then come back to
fetch you and Michael." said Johnny.
"Don't be silly. We can just walk home. If that's okay with Ronnie."
"I don't mind. The beach house isn't so far away anyway." replied
Veronica.
"Are you guys sure? I can always come back."
"No, you don't have to Johnny. It's really okay. Michael and I can
walk."
"I'm really sorry you guys." apologized Meg as she got of her seat.
"Don't blame yourself Meg. It's not your fault your stomach couldn't
handle that lobster." answered Michael.
"Yeah, Michael's right." agreed Veronica. "You take care and we'll see
you in a bit, okay?" she added as Johnny and Meg walked away from the
table.
"All right. Buh-bye." said Meg turning around to leave.
"Later!" added Johnny as he followed her out.
A few minutes after Meg and Johnny had left, the waitress
approached Veronica and Michael and placed in front of them a banana
split and and ice cream sundae.
"How are you feeling now?" asked Michael as he took a bite from his
banana split.
"I've been better, I guess." replied Veronica who seemed reluctant to
eat her sundae.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" said Michael, the concern evident in
his eyes.
"I don't know. I guess I just didn't expect it to end the way it did."
answered Veronica.
"What really did happen, Ronnie?"
What really did happen was something Veronica had never told
anyone. She couldn't bring herself to relive that day. It was enough that
she had to go through it once, she didn't want to go through all the pain
all over again by narrating the incident to everyone who asked her. It was
hard enough the first time, she didn't need to repeat it again.
Noticing the hesitation of Veronica, Michael quickly added, "You
don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
"It's not that I don't wanna tell you Michael. It's just that... it was
painful enough when it happened, I just can't bring myself to feel all that
pain again by repeating the story."
"I understand that Ronnie. But don't you think it would be better if
you let it out?"
There was something in the way Michael was looking at her and in
the sound of his voice that made Veronica want to tell him, of all people,
what had really happened. And so she did.
"Like I said, I didn't expect it to end the way it did. Everything
seemed so perfect. All of it seemed so right. He was everything I was not:
confident, free-spirited, outgoing. And I was everything he wasn't. We
were so different from each other that we seemed to fit together
perfectly, or so I thought. Then one day, out of the blue, he just came up
to me and told me he was leaving. I asked him what would happen to us
and he said 'I'm sure you'll find someone new. It's not like this would have
lasted forever right?' and the next day, he was gone..."
By the time Veronica had finished, tears were shining in her
beautiful brown eyes. Michael instinctively reached for her hand and gave
it a tight squeeze. He never said anything but his simple gesture was
enough to comfort Veronica. For the second time that day, she felt a
slight warmth creep up her face and for the second time that day, she
decided to shake it away.
