James Gunn announces Superman’s sequel 'Man of Tomorrow'; Check release date

James Gunn has announced the release date for the Superman sequel, titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, much to the delight of DC fans eager for more big-screen action. Gunn also hinted at the film's storyline. This follows the summer release of Superman, starring David Corenswet, which broke box office records and became one of the year's highest-grossing films.

James Gunn revealed on Instagram that Superman: Man of Tomorrow is set to premiere in theaters on July 9, 2027. This release is part of a strategic plan, following the 2026 release of Supergirl starring Milly Alcock. Consequently, the Superman sequel will debut before Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II, which is slated for release on October 1, 2027.

The most exciting detail revealed by Gunn's announcement was a comic panel showcasing Superman in a face-off against Lex Luthor, who is wearing his signature Warsuit. Nicholas Hoult, who first played Luthor in Gunn's Superman, will reprise his role in the sequel. In the comics, Luthor designed the Warsuit to counter Superman's powers, utilizing advanced technology, weapons, and strength-enhancing armor to match the Man of Steel's abilities.

In Gunn's initial Superman film, Luthor's attempt to defeat the hero involved experimenting with a Superman clone. However, the plan failed, and this new hint suggests Luthor will take a more direct approach. For dedicated DC fans, the Warsuit's inclusion references one of Luthor's most iconic storylines, promising a more personal and physical confrontation.

Cast of the film

David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult lead the cast of the upcoming Superman sequel as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, respectively. The supporting cast features Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Anthony Carrigan. The story will also include familiar faces like Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and the Kent family.
