Part 3
"Friends are like that, at some point in life they let go, and then it's each for their own... Kanak said quietly in barely audible voice.
He saw her, her face forlorn and posture slackening, as if trying to resign to the inevitable... he needed to get through her, he said "seems like you are missing your best friend already...
she just silently nodded up and down, "I am happy for her but suddenly I seem alone after all those years of being a constant companion... she laughed out a bit and continued ".. we have had uncountable midnight teas together in hostel... just like now, you and me here.
"I am not your friend. He replied back stonily.
"The place isn't vacant yet, she smiled at him sheepishly.
"I do not take vacant places, but make one for myself... he was getting serious now.
"I think it's too late she got up and placed back the empty cup on the bench, his gaze fell on her palm, she was about to cross him. He knew he had been hard, he had to make up, "hey that's lovely mehndi, my sister just loves a good design, can you tell which lady made that? He asked trying to keep her around him longer, trying to reignite the conversation. Kanak was a bit taken back, she looked at her hands, the compliment registering on her mind... "... umm I think it was Arti she kept looking at her hands and then raised her head, the coincidence was too much, there was U' written in between her palm, the lady had said that it was good omen to write u' for unmarried girls, Kanak hadn't given it much thought and had agreed to have a U written amidst her design. She looked back and forth between her hands and him, uttered a good night' while he kept looking at her retreating figure, with a smile on his face, he ran his hand through his hair, he had a chance but he messed it up too, but he was happy to see her connecting the dots, the signs he sent her way, that she was to be with him, be it shagun ki haldi it mehndi his name was written on her life.
Kanak was about to lock her door as she left for breakfast next morning, that she found a little potted plant hanging on the door knob, and a note stuck to her door which she hadn't seen earlier. It read "you didnt tell your name last night - she frowned upon it, opened the door and deposited the plant on the dresser and left without replying.
She saw him here and there, sometimes alone, sometimes with people, giving instructions for some preparations... he didn't look her way once, but she silently spied on him from the corner of her eyes. He was enigmatic and different - the only two things she could figure out about him.
He had left a note but didn't bother asking about it himself. At around noon she went back to her room to get some things, she saw an addition to the note. It had two questions marks below the previous name... she smiled a bit at it, he was making an effort, opening the door she went inside and her gaze fell on the little plant, she didn't know what plant it was but she knew she had a living thing on her hand to care about. She grabbed the things and took along a pen and wrote "Kanak.
He knew her name, yet he had to ask. He smiled watching her write her name on the piece of paper. She had left with a little smile on her face, she was happy. He came to the door and ran his fingers where she had written her name Kanak'... the way she had written it, Little did she know that she had imprinted herself on his life. Soon be assured himself. He wrote something and left.
Kanak came back sooner than expected to her room, she found another addition to the note, shaking her head at this strange method of communication in the age of technology. He had written "gold or intoxication lines formed on her head... what the hell!! She was angry, unable to understand the words or their context...she pulled out her pen and wrote NONE' she looked at it for a second and then tore off the paper from the door, scrunched in fury and threw it at his door.
She was angry, the way she looked through him during the wedding was something he couldn't get his head around. She snapped a bit at her friends too, but then she focused all energy in ignoring him out of his existence... he had known that she had spied him during the day, but now she was looking through him, while he imagined their pheras maybe she was imagining punching him... their eyes met, his questioning and her seething. Something had happened, did Jai say something, but how was it possible Jai issue was taken care off.
He went back to his room, unable to see her angry. He stepped over the ballot paper, he read it... he wrote something on it, stuck it on her door and left with his belongings.
After the ceremony done with Kanak walked back to her room with a heavy heart, happy for her friend yet the bidai has left everyone emotional. She saw the note flattened out and stuck to the door, it read "it was the meaning of your name : Kanak anyways GoodBye
All these years she had never bothered to find the meaning of her name and she always thought it meant wheat, but today that stranger had taught her another meaning and a lesson to not be judgmental. She took off the note and kept it inside her bag, it was in memory of that stranger.
To be continued. ..
Rocks and chappals are always welcome 🤗
Do let me know how weird it is getting to be.
