Pushing down the creases of her dress she stepped forward.
5 years, and her hearts beats still beat his name, she yearned for his touch and every breath she took was just another way of calling his name.

She sighed as she watched him from across the room

Rumors had it, after he found out the truth of his family and believed his wife was dead he drowned his sorrows in the bottom of a bottle


Once a respected man, now a drunken one.
Eyes shined with pity as they glanced upon him, yet even in this state of disaster he still had the power to make her heart skip a few beats.


She had waited, to be released from the hellhole she was in, to tell him everything now and remind him his wife was not dead, she was very much alive, in the same room as him.

Uma stood up as he slipped she grabbed his shoulders, looking into her eyes, he shook his head.
Many times he had seen his wife, in a drunken state but never so vividly.

Pushing her back, she hit the wall, his fingers slowly traced her face, before grabbing a handful of her hair and yanking it.

He brought her hair to his face, taking in her scent he pulled back

His fingers like shackles on her wrist he yanked her forward, twisting her around he wrapped one arm around her waist as his fingers drew sloppy spirals on her thigh

Spinning her around he dipped her low as her hair fell back from her shoulders, allowing him access to her neck, digging his face into the crook of her neck he began to place light kisses there.

She shuddered, gripping onto his shoulders tighter, the smell of alcohol both suffocating and painful as she gulped in a deep breath as he suckled on her neck

Yanking her up he shoved her backwards

Looking at his hands he coughed loudly , his voice raspy as he spoke again

Running forward she held his hand, she still couldn't find the words to speak her own name

The way he looked at her so intensely took her breath away, and each ability to form a sentence disappeared as he touched her


Shoving past her he walked out angrily, falling into a chair he leaned onto the wall as he braced himself to face life for another day

Tears dripped down her face as she watched him leave "Your Kanak wont leave you again Uma I promise "

Kanak walked out to see Uma laying on the floor, sitting next to him she put his head onto her lap, stroking his head she closed her eyes to try and remember how it felt to be this close to him again.
Her eyes filled with tears again as she looked down at him.

Her voice had always seemed to calm him when he was sad, so wiping her tears she began to sing

She wasnt expecting him to sing with her like he used to, turning his head to look up at her, he held her hand that rested on his face.

Uma's words were slurry as he sang with her "Kisi mod pe bhi na yeh saath toote Mere haath se tera daaman na chhoote"


Kanak's voice broke as she sang the next line, his hand reached up slowly to wipe her tears

"La la, la la la, la la la Kabhi khwaab mein bhi tu mujhse na roothe Mere pyaar ki koi khushiyaan na loote" resting her face into his hand she let out a shaky breath


Uma looked at her , his eyes were sleepy but he knew when his eyes closed he wouldnt wake up and see her again, his voice was a whisper as she continued to sing "Mil jaaye is tarah, do lehre jis tarah O mil jaaye is tarah, do lehre jis tarah Phir ho na judaa, haan yeh vaada raha Tu tu hai vohi dil ne jisse apna kaha Tu hai jahan main hoon vahan Ab to yeh jeena tere bin hai saza"



"Tujhe main jahan ki nazar se chura loon Kahin dil ke kone mein tujhko chhupa loon" Kanak's eyes remained close as she sang

Kanak watched as Uma's eyes closed slowly as he sang again "Kabhi zindagi mein pade mushkilein to Mujhe tu sambha le, tujhe main sambha loon"

"O mil jaaye is tarah, do lehre jis tarah - x2 Phir ho na judaa, haan yeh vaada raha"


Kanak was about to stop when she heard Uma sing with her

Stroking his hair she watched as he fell asleep, smiling she sang the last line as she swayed slowly from side to side
"Yeh vaada raha"

Uma awoke early the next morning, a blanket he didnt recognise was draped on him as he lay on the corner of the road.

Last night had felt so real, yet he knew it was but another drunken daydream.
For a long time he refused to believe his Kanak, his wife, his life was gone.

But as time went on it became harder to hold faith, everynow and then he would hear her voice, her laugh, if he was lucky he would see her.

But eventually she just left again.
It was hard, for him to continue without her.

But he made a promise, that he would never give up, deep down he wished the alcohol would take his choice away and finish him.
So he could be with her again, see her, touch her, hear her and know he wasnt alone.

Standing up he threw the blanket onto the bench as he massaged his throbbing temple.
Walking over to the nearest cafe , he sat and waited for Saras to give him his food.

Most days she would beg him to return to live with her and Vansh, other days she would serve him food and walk away.


Saras turned to face Kanak "Bhabisa are you sure this will work"
Kanak nodded "Just trust me please"
Saras nodded as she hugged Kanak and wiped away a tear

She was happy Kanak had returned, although she was unfamiliar with the circumstances


Stepping around the table she placed the halwa infront of Uma
He flinched as he looked at it, his face set in a stony grimace

"Saras you know I dont eat this anymore "
Saras shrugged "Its all I have"

She hid behind the corner as she watched him stir the dish, he picked some up on a spoon, before placing it in his mouth
Dropping the spoon back in, the halwa splashed

Uma shoved his chair back "Saras, I know you didnt make this, so who did"
Uma looked back at the dish "It tasted exactly how your bhabisa used to make it"

Returning to his table he finished it quickly as Kanak high fived Suman
"Bhabisa he never eats this much or this fast, but why cant we say you made it"

Kanak went on to explain how he didnt believe she was real last night so had to get him better and on his feet first

"Saras, who made it I wont ask again"
Saras pointed to Kanak who faced away from Uma and Saras

Uma watched as the woman sat in the rickshaw and left
"Dont be stupid, Kanak is gone"

Saras hid her smile as she waved her brother goodbye

Uma arrived at the club again, ordering his usual he sighed as he lifted the glass to drink when loud music played from behind him.

Turning swiftly he put his glass down, it sometimes angered him that the only money he had he wasted upon alcohol, but if it was the only way to be close with Kanak again , then it was worth it.


Kanak pulled her scarf over her head, holding it just above her head she shook it as she jumped off the stage

Kanak threw her scarf as Uma's eyes widened, how could he see her? He hadn't drank yet? Or maybe he was already drunk?
Shaking her shoulders she walked over to him slowly, pulling him up she winked at him.
Crossing her hands over she held his, spinning around with him she let go as she backed away clicking her fingers from side to side

Standing on the table she threw a glass onto the floor and threw her hands up waving as others joined in, on the floor.
Closing her eyes she fell back as Uma caught her
"Kanak wait"

Kanak put her arms around his neck and moved them fast from side to side, tapping his cheek she pulled at it before spinning around and sitting on the floor as she clapped, winking at him again.

As he held his hand out for her to take she yanked him down, her fingers traced his chest pulling the buttons apart on his top, she pushed him down and stood up.
Grabbing the scarf she put it over her head again as she backed away.

Uma stood up , pulling the scarf off her, shocked to see someone else, that wasnt Kanak.
Kanak stood behind the wall, watching with her fingers crossed

She needed Uma to believe and to fight for her like before or he would always be stuck
Even if it hurt them both by playing this game

Uma went to stand outside, the air carried a misty scent of sandalwood
"Kahan ho tum Kanak"
Looking towards the sky he watched the clouds disperse

Anklets knocked together in the distance
Walking around the corner he saw Kanak

Rushing over he grabbed her face, his chest up against hers as their breaths mingled in the cold street air
"Where have you been "

Pushing his forehead against hers he sighed deeply in relief at her presence
Raining kisses over her face she allowed herself to succumb to him

Her breathing heavier as she moaned out his name, making Uma lose all control
Pressing his lips to her cold ones, she was sent over the edge into bliss

His finger tips pushed underneath her top, drawing small circles on her back she gasped as he pushed himself more into her, like it would never be enough

Stumbling back even more, Kanak stood on her tiptoes to bring him closer, his tounge sending her to even more heights of dizziness as he pulled back, her eyes stayed shut , trying to regain herself

Whispering her name, made her open her eyes, "God i've missed you, tell me youre real, that this is real"

Kanak nodded as she allowed her fingers to dig into his hair, yanking him forward again

As they took a break to catch their breaths, her ears warmed, she couldnt get enough of this man, her fingers tracing the light stubble, pressing a kiss on the corner of his mouth she felt his lips crinkle up into a smile


"Come home with me"
"You didnt even have to ask i'll follow you to the ends of the earth if I have to"
Slipping her hand into his, he allowed her to lead him to wherever her home now was

Uma and Kanak stopped at the ice rink
"Lets go ice skating" Kanak shouted, overjoyed at the opportunity to spend more time with Uma

Uma agreed and after they both put their skates on, they stepped onto the ice
Uma span around, lifting one leg up

Kanak's jaw dropped "How are you so good at this, woahhh"
Nearly slipping she grasped tightly onto the side

"Okay, you skate, ill just stay here"
"No way, come on you can hold my hand"

Kanak smiled "I wont say no to that"
Uma began to go faster "Woah, Uma im going to fall, no dont let go of my hand woahhh"

Kanak skidded as Uma caught her, spinning her around "No, I cant do it"

"Close your eyes, just trust me"
Gulping she did as she was told, stretching out her hands till she felt his wrists

"Now one step, then another"
Lifting her foot to put it down, she paused, shaking her head

"Come on, trust me"
She wasnt quite sure what had changed, but by the time she opened her eyes, she was skating, Uma slowly let go of her as she did it alone

"Uma look i can do it" skating back into his arms she laughed
Uma rubbed his nose against hers "your nose is all red"

Kanak puffed out cold air as she laughed
Leaving the ice rink, she jumped onto his back and directed him on where to go

"So this is how you feel being a giant"
"Im not a giant, youre just tiny"
Slapping his shoulder "Good things come in small packages"

Smirking he stopped as she jumped down
"Does that mean I get to unwrap you"

Kanak ignored his comment as she pushed open the door and sighed in relief
She hoped he liked it, because she wanted him to stay

So this house could finally be a home

Uma awoke with a start as Kanak tossed and turned , a strangled scream escaped her throat as Uma sat up.

"Kanak, Kanak wake up"
As soon as her eyes opened she flung up,

"Stay away from me, i will never be yours"
Tears poured down her face as she shouted

Moving closer he reached out his hand but she shook her head "I said stay away from me, I will only ever be Uma's"

Uma stopped immediatley, who did she think she was talking to?

Kanak grabbed her head "No, no he will come for me, he will , and he will punish you for everything you have done"

Uma stepped closer "Who hurt you"

Kanak shook her head "Ek rakshaas"

"Kanak, listen youre safe now, see its me, your Uma"

Reaching out for him, he pulled her closer as she sobbed into his shoulder
"I knew you would come and save me, I told them you wouldn't leave me but they didnt believe me, I knew my Uma would come for me"

Resting her hands on his cheeks she leaned her head against his
But the truth was, he hadnt found her, he gave up and believed she was dead

But she never gave up on him, the guilt consumed him, even though Uma knew Kanak was dreaming
He knew that whatever she went through had scarred her and he had let her down by not protecting her

He wouldnt make that mistake again , that was a promise

Lifting her up, he sat in bed, pulling the blanket over them both as he rocked her slowly as she fell asleep

But sleep evaded him that night, he needed to find out the truth of what happened over the 5 years

Kanak awoke lying in Uma's arms
Memories of the night flooded her mind as she looked up at Uma

He would never be able to look at her when he found out the secret
She couldn't lose him again, she wouldnt risk it

Pulling herself up slowly she walked to the bathroom

"Kanak "
Kanak peeked her head around the door,
Uma smiled at her "I made us breakfast"

Kanak changed quickly before walking up to Uma who was faced another way "My husband can cook, arent I lucky"

Uma turned to face her, she wrapped her arms around his waist
"You know we need to talk about last night"

Kanak pulled away "Theres nothing to say"
"When youre ready, im here okay"

Kanak nodded as she dug into her breakfast
A rock was thrown through the window, missing Uma's face

Picking it up he unwrapped the paper "Im back baby"

Kanak shoved her chair back, running our of the room, Uma followed immediatley
