Part 8
Kanak rolled on the bed restless, facepalming herself for not asking his name either, "you are a fool Kanak she said for the umpteenth time. They both had sat on the stairs till the mosquitoes decided to make dinner from her, and she stood up shooing them away, she waved her hand left and right shooing' them away while he sat there looking at her twirling and jumping. He stood up and said "its late, see you in the morning he had nodded towards the house and she mechanically followed his gaze and went to her room. She turned to look at him and he was still there the darkness engulfing him... she sighed at the enigma he was and went to the room. She saw fresh towels on the bed, she wondered when he kept those. She was sleepy but as she hit the bed the sleep vanished as questions overpowered her mind. She had come back to ask directions and she hadn't even asked. She didn't ask his name what was this place... they were sitting together yet she didn't speak, in silence they both sat.
Uma was wide awake lying on the bed... he stared at the ceiling. While his mind was lost thinking about her... weird day it was, it had started from this bed when he had decided to ask her for help, to guide him from the darkness that had him restricted all these years. He knew she was special, she wasn't the usual, there was something about her that called out to him. Then she left and he went on to have a breakdown. But she returned. Only she had entered his domain without asking, left and came back again. He ran his hand over his head, he didn't even ask her name. Till morning he decided and went off to sleep.
Uma was setting his breakfast when kanak slid in to the chair, rubbing her eyes. Her state of hair disheveled, as if she sleep walked out of bed. A line is disapproval formed on his face, Uma went back to the kitchen, he returned only to find her head on table, his annoyance rising he kept the plate and cup with a slight thud, she just moved her head a bit. Uma sighed and went to eat his food. What a brilliant start to the day, he thought to himself. He ate his food silently while she sniffed and got up instantly, her eyes on the cup of coffee, she held it like a child holding its favorite toy. She looked like a gypsy, tangled hair, oversized kurta and hungover like a drunkard - exhaustion n sleepless night, he concluded. He finished and got up and left quietly, leaving her to get back to her sane head herself.
She watched while he ate and left, thank you never came up to her lips, it was weird that he somehow knew what she wanted at the exact same moment... she had done a zombie walk from bed in search of coffee and crashed at the table, he made coffee for her, he was genius - till he went away, all she could think was egotistical brat.
Uma was reading a book when Kanak walked down the porch step, he was hidden from her view. Kanak missed a step and fell down, he was about to jump to her rescue when he saw it wasn't required as she was sitting alright dusting her jeans, "Kanak Tera Kuch nahi hoga she talked to herself while Uma was amused and caught her name "Kanak. He whispered "Kanak And Kanak looked around as she heard the slight voice that called out her name. She shook her head and said "you have gone crazy Kanak she got up and spotted Uma sitting there, Uma hid his face pretending to read, not noticing her. Kanak stood there for a while figuring out to call him, how to interrupt his reading. Uma couldn't take it anymore she was taking ages, doing a mute practice, he was getting edgy so he said "what is it Kanak? He hadn't meant to say her name but she was incomplete without it and it just felt so right speaking it out loud. She had never heard her name like that before, but she had more important question, how did he know her name? Did she tell him while She was unconscious ?? "Don't overwork your brain, I heard you talking to yourself just minutes ago he replied to her unasked questions without even looking up from the book. She stood shocked with her mouth hanging.
"He is an antaryami Kanak mumbled to herself. She focused herself on important issue, "umm so what's your name, it would be courtesy to tell after you already know mine, said Kanak. "I am Uma Shankar, Uma replied looking straight at her.. she rocked back at the intensity of his gaze and even more on the aura his name created. "So you are the famous doctor Uma Shankar, about whom I have no idea Kanak cackled like a child at her own joke, she stopped when she saw his eyes still intent on her. Kanak mentally facepalmed herself, and got to serious stuff, " I have to go back, could you please tell me the directions, she said quiet force. "You cannot leave, he uttered three words and returned to read his book, a gesture that meant the conversation is over.. Kanak felt like a child who was being dismissed.
Anger flashed through her, how dare he stop me, she wasn't a kid to be controlled. She wasn't going to be a prisoner.
"You cannot keep me here against my will... is this what this place is all about trapping girls like rabbit... oh Kanak why didn't you think of it earlier she said accusing him and then talking to herself.
Words sounded like acid to him, she thought so low of him, ain't they all judgmental species, his mind working in circles at the intensity of the accusations.
He stood up and walked towards her stopping a few steps in front of her, "there is no walking trail out of this place, the terrain was damaged for any vehicle by the floods 3 years back. You want to leave go get lost in the forest, your luck if you make it out he voice stone cold dropped like stones on her.
She knew that it was the truth by his voice, and even that he was offended by her petty accusations, she wasn't wrong in assuming it but still she felt apologetic. "I am sorry Uma, she said as he was leaving. He just waved his hand "save it and turned enough to have her attention "a mouse, not a rabbit, you look like a mouse when you are angry he said and left leaving her to fume more.
