Part 7
Uma stacked the last piece and admired his work... he had fixed the vase, it held cracks but it was back in one piece.. just the way he had been broken time and again but he managed to survive. But unlike the vase his cracks didn't show.
"If you keep staring at it, it will break again, a voice called out from the door. Uma came out of his dazed state and looked at her, he knew the voice but he was shocked to see her. His eyes narrowed on her, as if questioning her... without waiting for his questions if they ever made way out of his mouth Kanak said "I need your help!!.. Uma kept looking at her, realization struck that it was really her, not just his mind playing tricks at him. She was back. She needed help. "What for? His tone mechanical. " ummm you must know that by now I had left to go away,... she paused he looked different than yesterday, something had changed about him. He looked weirdly composed yet equally complex. Something flashed in his eyes by the way he looked at her... he actually looked at her and that was making her nervous. "And you came back he added to her sentence without taking his eyes off her. He stared back in a challenge. "Ummm iii itts ... Kanak stuttered, hating herself that words didn't come out coherently.. it had been a long time since she had that disadvantage, of all times it had to come back now. She broke eye contact with him and fiddled with her hands and took a deep breath and said "I walked for hours and hours and yet I couldn't find my way out of the jungle!! So I came back. His eyes went to his fidgety hands, that were shaking up, he saw red on her shirt - his shirt not that it mattered anyway. He got up and walked to her while she back-stepped. He held out his hand while she just looked at him, after a few seconds he nodded towards her hands... she looked at her injured hand and realized his walk of concern. She just waved it off, assuring him that it was just a cut. He caught her hand by the sleeve and tugged her behind to sit on the sofa. He came with the first aid box and tended her hand while she just kept looking at him, confused at the guy in front of him.. one moment he was glaring and the next he took care of her. She shook her head to clear it. "Thank you she said as she took her hand back into her lap. While he stood up and moved away from her. "I am sorry she said and he stopped to turn, arching up his eye in a question "for being back she changed her sentence at the last moment. She had intended to apologize for leaving without even a note... but she stopped herself. "How did you come back, not that it's surprising because you already did come here without directions before he shut his mouth tightly he hadn't meant to say that part, yet he couldn't stop himself. A look of shock flashed through her eyes, but she maintained herself and smiled sadly and said "I notched the trees as I left , and followed it back she was feeling weird out of place but she steeled herself against any pain. "That's actually smart Uma replied looking at her impressed. He walked to the kitchen and came back with snack bar and a bottle of water, he handed it to her "you haven't eaten since last night she took it from him, but her mind was else where, not that his presence allowed her mind to fleet away, but at the same time his presence made it more difficult to be there. Silence crept up between them. While Uma sat away in the corner looking out of the window the sun had finally set, the birds flying back to their nests chirping and talking to each other about their day, Uma listening to them but his ears searched only for her voice. How silent she sat there, without moving, the smell of chandan overpowering his senses. He turned to his side to look at her and she wasn't there, did she pull a disappearing act again on him, he groaned and put his head in his hands. Kanak tapped slightly on his shoulder, bending to look at him, he jerked up his head and their heads bumped "ouch she cried out rubbing it. She asked if he was alright, he just nodded. He stood up to check if she was fine, as she still rubbed her head. "I didn't realize you were near, I am sorry he said. "I was standing there she pointed a few steps behind his chair, "to look at the birds. I wanted to see what was out there that consumed you. Then you groaned and I thought you were hurt so I wanted to ask if you were alright
He took a sharp breath, a the while he was consumed with her chandan smell because she stood behind him...how ninja like was she.
"I will get the dinner ready he said softly, he didn't mean to be hard for he knew she was scared of him, little did she know how scared he was of her..trying to put a distance between them. "I can help she added with a smile, and fell instep with him towards the kitchen. She had walked ahead of him, when she suddenly stopped and turned to look at him, a sudden look of apology on her face, he was standing there looking back at her when she asked meekly/nervous "can I help with the dinner, I won't if you don't want it.. I shouldn't have ... she was about to step away when he said " it's fine, don't go, but you aren't allowed to do much... lines of annoyance formed on her face, not allowed to do much - as if I need permission, he is such a raja baby'... Uma cut through her thought process and said " I meant your hand is injured you shouldn't move it much... don't scream so loud, I can hear it all he walked past her leaving her to follow with her mouth agape.
They both cooked in silence. He added ingredients to the pot and she sat on the counter mixing it with one hand. He was annoyed by her for sitting on the counter but he couldn't do anything about it. For he had decided he would hold back everything even his anger and annoyance. They both fit perfectly in that space, they didn't decide on what to do they just took up on their roles.
They took their plates out side on the porch and sat on different ends of the stairs, they had their first meal together but the silence in between was their best friend and worst enemy.
To be continued...
