On a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon Trilochan Roy Chaudhary was sitting at the dining table with his family for their traditional weekly lunch. He considered himself fortunate to have been having this weekly Sunday lunch with his whole family since the past one and a half year. He took delight in watching his family members leading prosperous lives after everything they had to go through due to the enmity between the two villages. He turned his head and his eyes fell upon his eldest nephew Aniruddha. He saw him talking to his younger sister Shashwathi about the test she had last Friday. His eyes then fell upon the other two nephews- Batuk and Somnath, who were busy having a very serious discussion about the victory of Indian Hockey Team in the Olympic Games. He slightly chuckled at the seriousness of the discussion and looked at his younger brother, Binoy, who was having a debate with his wife, Sampoorna, about whether Sampoorna should accompany his to the party he was invited to. Sampoorna was against the idea of her going as she didn’t feel comfortable among the rich socialites. Binoy’s recovery had not been an easy path, but Trilochan Roy Chaudhary was glad that his brother had Sampoorna who held his hand during his long journey of recovery. He felt elated every time he saw his younger brother behave like his old self. His eyes searched for the person he loved the most in the family. Although he would never admit to it, his whole family knew that Trilochan Roy Chaudhary loved his eldest daughter-in-law, Bondita, more than everyone else. His thoughts wandered off the desire he had been harboring ever since Aniruddha returned from London after completing his education all those years ago- the desire to be a grandfather, to have Aniruddha's little kids running around the house.
When he didn’t see Bondita at the table or even in the hall,he turned to Bihari, who was standing next to his chair and asked, “Arrey Bihari, Bahu kaha hai? Abhi tak aayi kyu nahi woh?” Bihari answered, “Woh Maalik, Chhoti Malkin rasoi mein kheer bana rahi. Aati hi hogi.” Trilochan Roy Chaudhary, suddenly decided that it was high time to talk to his stupid kids about their family planning. He cleared his throat and said, while looking at Aniruddh, “Aniruddha beta! Kya socha hai aage ka tumne? Hum sab ko kab khsuhkhabari suna rahe ho tum aur Bahu?”
Aniruddha, who was busy talking to his younger sister, got confused for a moment about what ‘khushkhabari’ his Kaka was talking about. After a few seconds he realized what must be Kaka was asking about and he got excited to share about the good news he had received yesterday. He answered his Kaka with excitement, “Arrey Kaka,kal hi mujhe aur Bondita ko pata chala iss khushkhabri ke baare mein aur hum dono aapko kal bataane hi waale the par iss Batuk ne apni kahaani shuru kar di thi aur hume mauka hi nahi mila. Achha hua ki aapne yaad dila di yeh baat.” Kaka was surprised for a moment at how his stupid son had become smart enough to think about himself and their family’s happiness. Just when Kaka was about to ask Bihari to bring Roshogulle, Aniruddha interrupted him with his question, “Par Kaka aapko kaise pata chala iss baare mein? Abhi toh Judge Sahab ne sirf mujhe aur Bondita ko hi bataayi hai yeh baat!”
Rest of the family members had stopped their discussion and now there also listening to the conversation going on between Kaka and Aniruddha; they were also excited to hear about this good news. However the mention of Judge Sahab had puzzled Kaka, so he asked, “Judge Sahab kyu bataayege tumhe yeh baat? Unka kya lena iss se? Waise bhi yeh sab baat abhi sabko nahi bataayi jaati. Shuruwati ke kuch mahine bahut naazuk hote hai, bahut dhyaan rakhna hota hai iss samay. Koi bhi uch-neech nahi honi chahiye.” Now it was Aniruddha’s turn to be confused, he was unable to understand what his Kaka was trying to say. “Kya uch-neech? Aur kyu nahi batayi ja sakti yeh baat sabko, haan? Yeh toh khushi ki baat hai naa aur khushiyaan toh sabke sath baantni chahiye. Mai toh pure Tulsipur mein meethaiyaan batwaunga. Aakhirkaar itna khushi ka mauka diya hai Bondita ne mujhe.”
Kaka became furious at his ever so stupid and stubborn son but tried to reason with him in a calm manner, “Beta! Aise nahi hota, har khushi baantne ka sahi sanmay hota hai. Agar abhi se yeh baat sabko pata chali toh Bahu aur bachche ko khatra ho sakta hai. Jaante nahi ho kya ki kitne log nazar lagaane ko hi baithe hai humari khushiyon ko!” “Bachcha? Kaisa bachcha?kaha se aane wala hai?”, asked a bewildered Aniruddha. However, it seemed like everyone at the table, except Aniruddha and Shashwathi, had understood what Kaka was trying to say; but before anyone could say anything, Aniruddha continued, “Judge Sahab ne bola hai ki mahine ke aakhiri Shanivaar ko Bondita ke shaan mein party rakhi gayi hai, aur jalse ka aayojan ho bhi kyu naa Bondita ne utna penchida case jo jeeta tha who bhi Culcutta ke utne bade Barrister ke khilaaf. Par mujhe yeh samjh nahi aa raha ki in sab baton mein bachcha kaha se aa gaya aur kiska bachcha?”
Kaka was now fuming in anger at his stupid son for misunderstanding his words and giving him hope a few moments. He was about to give Aniruddha a scolding, but Batuk beat him to it by his laughter. Aniruddha looked him in confusion and raised his eyebrows in question. Kaka glared at Batuk but did not say anything. Aniruddha looked at the rest of the family members to see if they share his confusion only to found them suppressing their laughs. The only other person who was as confused as him was his younger sister, so she also wanted to know what was so funny, “Batuk Dada aap aise kyu hass rahe hain? Aur kaun sa bachcha aane wala hai? Mere liye koi naya dost aa raha hai kya? Kab aayega bachcha? Batao naa!” Batuk was busy laughing so Binoy answered his little daughter, “Beta bachcha kab aayega iska jawaab toh tumhe sirf tumhare Aniruddha Dada hi sakte hain.” “Yaa firr Bondita.”, added Sampoorna with a chuckle. While Shashwathi was still confused about what the elders were saying, Aniruddha had finally understood what the confusion was all about. He looked up to find his father giving a slight smirk in his direction. His ears turned red. Kaka was still angry at him and he said, “Ek dum nalayak ho tum. Par abb waqt ho gaya hai ki tum iss galatfehmi ko sach kar do. Arrey dedh varsh ho gaye hai tumhare vivah ko. Abb aur kitna intezaar karna hoga hume?” Anirudhha began, “Kaka yeh sirf Bondita ka nirnay hoga ki woh kab iss zimmedari ko uthaane ke liye tayyar hai. Mai us par koi dabaav nahi...”, but he was cut off by Kaka, “Tum chup karo! Aaj hum bahu se khud baat karege aur woh bhi abhi hi.”
Bondita was busy in kitchen cooking kheer for everyone. She was very happy with the news about the party, not because it was a party in her honor but because the news of party made her Pati Babu very happy. So, she decided to cook something sweet for him. She had just put the bowl of kheer in the tray to take outside, when she heard her Kakasasur Ji calling her name. She took the tray and went to the dining hall. As soon as she entered the dining area, Kakasasur Ji said, “Bahu, hum tumhare bade hai, Pita samaan hai tumhare aur agar hum tumse kuch maange toh tum hume mana karogi kya?” Bondita was confused at the suddenness of the question, but she answered him anyway, “Mai bhala aapki kahi koi bhi baat taal sakti hoon kya! Aap aadesh dijiye aur yeh Bondita abhi abhi aapke mann ki icchha puri karne mein lag jayegi.” Kakasasur Ji seemed very happy with her reply and he gave Aniruddha a look as if to say “Abb kya karoge tum?” and Aniruddha just rolled his eyes. Bondita added, “Boliye Kakasasur Ji kya karna hoga Bondita ko, jitni jaldi bataayege aap utni jaldi main aapki mann ki icchha puri kar sakugi.”
Batuk, who had been trying to hold his laughter in front of his Baudi, burst out laughing at her eagerness to fulfill Kaka’s wishes. Anirudhha and Kaka glared at him, while Bondita just gave him an annoyed look. Bondita asked him to keep quiet and looked at Kaka to answer her question. Sampoorna, who was watching this with a smile on her lips, added, “Bondita agar tu Jeth Ji ki yeh icchha puri kar degi toh mai tujhe har hafte ekk badam wale roshogulle ki handiya doongi.” Bondita eyes twinkled at the mention of Roshogulle. She asked Sampoorna, “Shotti?” to which Sampoorna replied, “Shotti!” Bondita’s mouth was already watering at the mere mention of the Roshogulle. She decided that she would do anything to fulfill her Kakasasur Ji’s wishes, not that she needed Roshogulle to do so but there’s nothing harm in getting a reward in the form of her most favorite dish. Sampoorna broke her chain of thoughts by saying, “Par tu tere Pati Babu se bhi toh puchh le ki woh tujhe yeh karne denge bhi yaa nahi.” Sampoorna gave Aniruddha a teasing look as she finished saying this.
Bondita, in her excitement of getting roshogulle every week,ignored the look her Pati Babu was trying to give her, so that she would not say something which would be a cause of embarrassment for her. He didn’t want his wife to make a fool of herself, like he did just minutes ago because he knew his youngest brother, who was also the best friend of his wife, would never let her forget this incidence. But Bondita being Bondita announced, “Mai Kakasasur Ji ki icchha jaroor puri karugi, firr chaahe ismein Pati Babu mera sath de yaa naa de. Mai toh yeh kaam kar ke rahugi. Unki anumati ki zaroorat nahi hai mujhe.” Batuk laughed at this and Anirudhha just shook his head in defeat because he knew that Batuk would never let his best friend live this one down. Even Baba and Sampoorna chuckled at her words. Kakasasur Ji seemed very pleased with his daughter-in-law, after all there’s a reason why he loved her the most.
As Batuk continued to laugh, Bondita turned to glare at him.“Haan Baudi tumhe Dada ke anumati ki zaroorat nahi toh nahi hogi par unki sahaayata ki zaroorat toh jaroor hogi.”, said Butuk in between his laughs. At this, even Som was not able to control his laugh and everyone at the table,except Bondita, Aniruddha and Shashwathi, burst out laughing. Bondita glanced at Aniruddha for answers to find his ears turning red and he was looking down,fighting a grin off his face. Batuk looked at his best friend’s confused face and it was too good of an opportunity to let go off, he finally got the opportunity to settle the scores after the last time when she got him scolded for eating Shashwathi’s chocolates. Batuk said with an evil grin on his face, “Maana Baudi ki tumhe Dada ne aatmnirbhar banaya hai par itna bhi nahi banaya ki yeh kaam tum unke bina akele kar sako.” “Aisa kaun sa kaam hai jo mai akele nahi kar sakti? Haan ? Jawaab do Batuk!”, asked an irritated Bondita.
But before Batuk could reply, Shashwathi said in a loud voice, “Nahi! Pehle mere sawaal ka jawaab do aap sab. Kab aa raha hai woh bachcha jiski baat Kaka kar rahe the aur iska jawaab sirf Aniruddha Dada hi kyu de sakte hain?” and then she turned towards Bondita and pleaded, “Aap bolo naa Dada ko ki bachcha le aaye, mujhe khelna hai uske sath. kitna maza aayega ekk aur aa jayega hum sab bachcho ke sath khelne wala. Aap bolo naa unse.” After listening Shashwathi’s words, Bondita understood what her Kakasasur Ji’s wish was. She could feel the heat rising in her face and her ears getting warm as she realized what she had just said. She met her Pati Babu’s eyes, he couldn’t fight off the grin anymore. She heard everyone was laughing, Batuk being the loudest one and she knew her best friend would never let her hear the end of it.
Later in the night, Aniruddha entered in their room and saw his wife standing by the window looking at the stars. He slowly went to her and hugged her from behind; she immediately melted in his arms. “Pati Babu, Batuk aaj jo hua woh kabhi bhoolne nahi dega mujhe! Abb mujhe kuch aisa karna hoga jiss se uss bhukkad ka muh band rahe.”, said Bondita with closed eyes. Aniruddha chuckled as he realized that her biggest worry was Batuk having an upper hand over her, and not the embarrassing situation she had put herself in during the lunch. She then turned in his arms and looked in his eyes. With a mischievous glint sparking in her eyes, she said, “Waise jitna bhi bewakuf ho Batuk, ekk baat toh usne sahi kahi bilukul ki jo kaam Kakasasur Ji ne diya hai mujhe use mai akele toh pura nahi kar sakti. Aap karege meri madad?” Anirudhha was taken aback at her boldness and she giggled at the stunned look on his face.
