After 3000 Crores Worldwide, Dhurandhar Hugely Disappoints in Japan

Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar, led by Ranveer Singh has finally arrived in Japanese cinemas, but the film's opening day performance has not matched the expectations built around its global success. Released in the country on July 10, 2026, the Ranveer Singh-led action drama recorded a subdued start, falling short of the numbers posted by several Indian films that have found an audience in Japan.

According to data published by Mimorin, the film attracted 449 admissions by 2 PM while screening across 57 locations. Although the release later expanded to 80 locations, audience turnout slowed considerably through the rest of the day. By the close of business, total footfalls remained below the 900 mark, preventing the film from securing a place among Japan's top 25 releases for the day.

Global Box Office Success Doesn't Translate To Japan

The opening result comes as a surprise considering the franchise's remarkable worldwide performance. Dhurandhar, which released in India in December 2025, went on to become a major commercial success before being followed by Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Together, the two films amassed more than Rs 3,000 crore globally, becoming the first Indian franchise to achieve that milestone.

Given the series' strong international standing, expectations surrounding its Japanese release were considerably higher. However, the first day's response suggests that the franchise still has work to do in connecting with audiences in one of Asia's most competitive theatrical markets.

Weekend Will Decide The Film's Trajectory

Japan has previously embraced several Indian productions, with films such as RRR and Saaho registering stronger opening-day attendance. In comparison, Dhurandhar delivered numbers similar to Pushpa 2, which also recorded fewer than 900 admissions on its opening day despite significant anticipation before release.

The coming weekend is now expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the film can recover. Positive audience feedback often helps overseas releases gain momentum after a slow beginning, although Dhurandhar will also have to contend with local titles and international releases currently competing for screens.

Trade observers will be monitoring the film's performance over the next few days to see whether stronger word of mouth can improve collections. While the franchise has already established itself as a global box office success, its journey in Japan has begun on a far more restrained note.
