CHAPTER 3:

22nd December, near the main gate...

"Did you see Surya going out at night?"

"Don't remember Sahab!"

"When did you see Surya for the last time?"

"Don't remember Sahab!"

"Did you spot anyone near the gate at midnight yesterday? Any suspecting moves from anyone?"

"Don't know Sahab!"

"What?" Jalal was now disgusted. His mood is already spoilt after the fight with Jodha, and now this idiot gateman of the house. There is only one main frontal gate of the whole mansion, and it usually remains unlocked being guarded by a heavy-weight watchman from the village. It seems last night the dosage of opium was higher than normal... disgusting!

"DO YOU KNOW THAT YOUR RAJASAHIB HAD BEEN MURDERED?? WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING LAST NIGHT SITTING HERE??" Jalal shouted and went back. The lawn is quite vast and surrounded by a barrier of wall. Anyone can hide anywhere under the bushes or behind the trees... The soil is a little wet due to the light rainfall last day, and a few foot-prints have been encrypted on the soil. The footsteps are mixed up with each-other... not possible to distinguish anything from that...but...Jalal's observing eyes did not miss. There is surely a print of the wheel of small trolley-bag going out of the mansion amongst those footprints. Surya has definitely escaped through this way last night, and has preferred the rounded way through soil of garden than the pebbled path from frontal door, possibly to hide from everyone's eyes. He intended to hide and did not take any risk in committing this risky deed, so the gateman could not see him...but...

In a watchful sloth pace Jalal followed the prints. The traces leaded him somewhere at the back of the house. The traces are light, almost invisible so it is difficult to follow properly- that from exactly where it has started and has ended; but following his instinct he could fathom that Surya had come out of the house using the backdoor, and then through the muddy path of garden reached near the main gate and escaped when got a proper chance. But who was he who came through the window?

He went near the rain-pipe coming down from the room of Mr. Bharmal and keenly observed the footprints on the soil. Seems like they are of mere cheap flip-flop sandals rather than of a good lather shoe like previous ones... someone with sandals did trespass inside the house and the room of the owner of the house as well, most probably from the back of the mansion, via the wall as suggested by these prints. Some uniformed constables were doing their work; Jalal looked at them when Sahani came to him and saluted.

"I sent the body to the nearest morgue sir, but it will take time..."

"Yeah!" Jalal shrugged. He can't expect a great professionalism from the morgue-doctors of the very small township nearest to this rural place Madhubani. However, "by then try to find Surya." He told. "By the way, did you talk with everyone?"

"I mean sir..." Sahani started rubbing his hands together. It seems the enthusiasm of enquiry is diluted after seeing a higher ranked officer from central office being directly involved here.

"I will talk to everyone of this house and you have to keep all in record." Jalal concluded. "But... before that..." he did not complete and went off.

22nd December, in Surya's room...

With tired and disgusted frown Jodha was staring at her old photograph, still standing on the floor of Surya's room. Jalal has shown reasonless grudge on her just sometimes back which has hurt her a lot; but she was not thinking about that. She was thinking about something else... someone else... about her childhood infatuation. Life was so simple those days... so was the concept of love... in the teenage all falls in love with the idea of love, and tries to apply that on own. So happened with her those days; and completely under those charms of teenage she had considered her most faithful friend, the studious and introvert secret poet Surya as the love of her life. It took no time to break the spell, probably after getting the step in adulthood the bubble of eutopic dreams of love started to break due to some small yet strong reasons, and when his father was seriously thinking about her marriage to prevent her from going to study criminal law everything changed very fast. Surya was an underdog always, and he was quiet most of the times when Jodha took the decision of leaving the house. Forget supporting her, he even tried her to convince for the marriage for peace... he prefers to be a Devdas rather than to voice for his love. After a long fight of words, where Surya was almost silent, Jodha had understood clearly that this man is not someone whom she wants, rather he is yet to strengthen his backbone, and the spell of the idea of being in love took no time to get over!

Years have passed since they broke up, and those days seem like a funny chapter of her life to Jodha now. She has got her own life, the best man for her, and Surya has become a non-identity quite a long ago. But Surya could not come out of that infatuation... how?

This fact had moved her, when she could understand how Surya feels for her till this day! It was illogical... and by no chance Jodha can be blamed for her decision of accepting Jalal as her life-partner, but still she felt bad, and wished from her heart that Surya would get a good girl for him soon to get him out from the craziness of childhood.

19TH DECEMBER, NIGHT, NEAR THE BALCONY...

It was nearly 11 pm when Jodha spotted Surya at the balcony of the back of the house. The rule of this house is to sleep within 10:30 pm so everyone was in their room, but it's tough to sleep so early for Jodha nowadays, so she thought to have a walk there. But she did not expect any other man near balcony. Surya was standing vacant, his eyes staring at the night sky...

"Surya?"

Surya looked at her. His eyes red in furry and grief... with a suppressed rage he suddenly clasped her shoulder... "How can you do this?"

Jodha was surprised. For the first time in her life she saw Surya to become so expressive about emotions... "What? What have I done?"

"You... you forgot me Jodha!" In extreme pain Surya's voice shook. "You forgot everything about us!"

"Surya..." Jodha gave a sigh. "If there was anything between us ever, it has ended long ago. Both of us know that it was impossible to have a steady and serious relationship between us. I have moved on long back, I had hoped you too have..."

"What do you mean Jodha!" Surya's voice sounded like wailing. "Does love need so many conditions? Steady, serious... so many calculations? What are you saying Jodha! How will I move on! I have loved you with all of my entity... I have given away everything for you... I waited for you... and you are saying there cannot be any serious relationship between us???"

"Stop it and be practical Surya! Perhaps love does not need any condition but a sustainable relationship does need it! We were always poles apart, and we are not made for each other!" Jodha had said. "However, I have come out of all sentiments and emotions that I had for you long ago. When I needed your support you did not, when I wanted to stay with you, you denied and now after 10 years you are demanding love from me?"

"How could I support you that time Jodha? I was just pursuing graduation that time and I had nowhere to go except..."

"Yes, so you could not gather courage to even support me mentally, rather tried to prove me wrong, and even tried to pursue me to go on as my father wants to. You had no choice right? Thing is, you were afraid of falling in my father's eyes; you were afraid that if by any chance my father knows that you're going against him he might throw you off; so you preferred your own advantage, your own provisions over me and my life and save your position. Wasn't it coward and selfish? " Jodha controlled herself from being carried away. "However... I don't even remember those days now, and I am not in love with you... I have got my man, and I hope you will get your love of life very soon." Despite her trial, she could not help but to tell- "Jalal is just as perfect as a man can be. Honest, loyal and brave... We have been in a courtship for 2-3 years almost, and I have got to know and understand him completely. I am happy, so don't seek solace in sorrow and get a life!"

She did not guess his reaction after this, but it is for sure that his reaction was quite unexpected. In a wet voice suddenly he uttered. "Jalal is a brave man! An honest man! And so you love him!"

"Surya..."

"Jalal is not coward... not greedy... and you love him..."

"What type of madness is this Surya?"

Surya looked at her incoherently... There was a lot of pain in his eyes... Pain, resentment, grief, repugnance, helplessness and anger all had been mixed in one glare... "You hate a coward, dishonest and greedy man! You... you will move on with a perfect man and will hate me... You hate me Jodha!! Jodha you..."

"No Surya... Not like that... look in childhood these things are..." Jodha tried to pursue him getting tensed to see his craziness, but suddenly he gripped her hand and tried control himself. "Sorry! I am sorry Jodha! I am sorry!" He uttered, and then, without giving her any time to get the situation, he got invisible in the dark...

Quite a strange incident it was, as Jodha hardly expected Surya to be so serious about that relationship. But the pictures got clearer... next morning...

20TH DECEMBER, MORNING, KITCHEN TABLE...

"Good Morning Maa!"Jodha wished her mother who was instructing the servants to ready the breakfast in kitchen. Meenakshi looked at Jodha's happy gestures with a worried face and held her hands to take her at a corner to talk in private.

"Why did you do this, Jodha?"

"What?" Jodha was quite surprised to see her mother's tensed, angry eyes.

"I had told you Jodha that we are..." Meenakshi exhaled hopelessly... "That we are thinking about your marriage. Your papa has agreed for your marriage and you suddenly..."

"You told that you all are worried for my marriage and so I brought the guy here whom I will marry. What's the problem Maa?" Jodha frowned with an irritated look. "What do you all expect? That I will come here like a good girl and sit for marriage as a business deal of my father?" She paused... "Like Sukanya?"

"No Jodha... We..."

"What's the problem Maa? Don't you guys like Jalal? Isn't he good enough as your son-in-law?" Jodha raised her voice.

"Yes... Jalal is a very good person... I don't mean that but..."

"But what?"Jodha was angry enough. "That he is Khan'?"

"Jodha... Why can't you understand..."

"Dadi did not say anything against our relation, you yourself are not of that mentality I know, even too much of my surprise, your pati parameswar too looked absolutely fine with this, then suddenly what question arose?"

"Your father had promised Surya to marry him off with you Jodha!" Meenakshi revealed suddenly. "All had suspected you both that time, though we did not say anything about it... you left the house but Surya was here... it was not tough to understand everything... Surya is our boy, and so loyal to your father so he thought to tie you both up... and I also did not deny, as you used to like him I know... But suddenly Jalal... I don't know what to do!" She looked really tensed with the situation.

Jodha stayed quiet for a while, then sighed. "Don't worry Maa. Surya is sensible enough to understand. Papa too has no problem with it. Don't worry!"

So that was that. His father had thought to get Surya married to Jodha, and hence Surya started weaving dreams, and then the dream broke, and so he...

So easy equation?

Jodha carelessly looked at the torn pages of Surya's diary that Jalal left on her hand. Should she tell Jalal about her conversation with Surya and also about the proposal in her family? But Jalal is hurt and hence furious now... and Jodha is not going to bend in front of him anyway!

"Jodha!"

"Jalal!" Jodha went to him as Jalal was standing by the door with somehow a tender glare. "Jalal I had to tell something to you that I forgot to..."

"Tell me one thing first!" Jalal held her shoulder and asked in an enthusiastic tone, which shows that he has forgotten about his grievance on her just few minutes back. "Who keeps the keys of the door of backyard?"

22 December, in the backyard...

"Locked from inside!" Jalal pulled the lock of the door twice. "Strange!"

"This door is usually locked." Jodha told.

"But if Surya escaped from this door, who locked that from inside after that." Jalal frowned. "You said there are 3 duplicates of the key; one is with your Dadi, another in your father's drawer and another one is kept by your uncle...Right? It's not at all difficult for Surya to get the key, but who locked the door after his exit? Mr. Sahani..."

"Yes sir!"

"Open the door."

The light from outside brightened the place when the door was opened. The door is not opened frequently, but it's not that much dusty as it was supposed to be, as it had been opened just before a day. There was nothing special to observe, still Jalal keenly noticed the door and the floor. "You may go for your work, Mr. Sahani..." He told. "Yes, I need the records of the interrogations so get ready with those."

"Yes Sir!" Sahani went from there, perhaps to get the pen-paper and recorder to keep records of investigation... Jalal observed the place for a moment again before locking the door and then looked at Jodha.

"My father had fixed my marriage with Surya before we turned up here." Jodha informed, emphasizing on the fury of her voice. Jalal was stunned for a moment, and then he readily coped up. Both of them gazed at each other for a long time with a trial of starting a conversation, but alas, the sting of ego did not let them to... Then both of them followed their own path.
