Dabangg Opens To Earth Shattering Response

Friday 10th September 2010 11.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dabangg opened this morning to an earth shattering start all over despite bad weather in the North trying to play spoil sport. The first shows opened at around 9.00 am and as expected the response was simply mindboggling. Last year Three Idiots started shows as early as 6.30 am in the morning but this was not the case with Dabangg as very early morning shows have a limited turnout. The ticket rates of Dabangg have also not been hiked like for Three Idiots. Some collections from major theatres for first show are as follows.

Cinemax Thane (9.30 am) - 15,500 (100%)
Big Odeon Delhi (10.30 am) - 53,500 (100%)
Wave Raja Garden Delhi (10.15 am) - 22,100 (100%)
Wave Ludhiana (10.15am) - 38,500 (100%)
Wave Ludhiana (10.45am) - 38,500 (100%)

Wave Ludhiana is also house full for the 11.30am show. This is a very good sign as collections are huge in East Punjab which is a multiplex circuit and also a circuit where Salman Khan films tend to under perform. Wanted was weakest in Punjab compared to the rest of India. The single screen figures are likely to be like nothing seen before.

Review: Dabangg is slightly mad, and terribly entertaining

A Dabangg poster
Film: Dabangg
Director: Abhinav Kashyap
Cast:
Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia and others
Rating:
****
Robert Rodriguez – maker of the cult western Desperado, starring Antonio Banderas – would be proud of Dabangg. So would Manmohan Desai. Debutante director-writer Abhinav Kashyap has combined elements from the films of the two – a mix of spaghetti and khichdi if you may – and served up a meal that's palatable and scrumptious at the same time.
There's Salman Banderas Bachchan Khan for the main course. Salman plays Chulbul aka Robinhood Pandey, a cop in Lalganj, UP, who gives criminals hell but ensures he stands to personally gain from it. In a stunningly choreographed opening sequence, he beats up a gang of bank robbers to pulp and keeps the loot for himself. It's a lawless land, as the promos warned you. And Chulbul makes the most of it.
He lives with his stepfather, Prajapati [Khanna] and mother [Kapadia] and has a sautela bhai Makkhi [Arbaaz], who's dumb as a dodo. Chulbul feels that Prajapati always treated him badly and so hates both him and Makkhi. Arbaaz – also the film's producer – is aptly cast as Chulbul's dimwitted young stepbrother, a kind of a lovable buffoon.
Also well cast is Sonu Sood as local politician Chhedi Singh. Chhedi has a bone to pick with Chulbul and uses the latter's animosity against his family members as a ploy to get even with him. Sood – after a long time – brings to screen a gunda that people would love to hate.
In one scene, he asks his cronies who the biggest villain in the city is. One of them promptly says that it's Chhedi himself to which he smashes the guy's head with a coconut. "Hum bachpan se hero banna chahte hain. Aur yeh hamein villain bana raha hai [I have wanted to be a hero since I was a kid, but this guy says I'm a villain]". Chhedi also has a personal photographer who follows him everywhere and goes "Bhaiyyaji, photu" every now and then. You can't help but chuckle.
Finishing the circle is village belle Rajjo [Sinha]. Just like the villain, you see a gaon ki chhori in a Hindi film after ages. Sinha makes a decent debut, standing up to her superstar co-actor in quite a few scenes."Pyaar se dar lagta hai babu, thappad se nahi," she tells Chulbul, who now smitten, breaks into a jig, singing 'Tere Mast Mast Do Nain'. The film has one song too many, but they are all well-tuned and smartly-picturised. Munni Badnaam Hui, of course, is the highlight.
Malaika Arora Khan, as Munni, gyrates hypnotically to beats by Sajid-Wajid [effective] as Chhedi tries to serenade her. That's till Chulbul comes on to the scene. If you're watching the film in a single screen, you will probably be deafened by the applause that follows, but make sure you hear Chulbul's dialogues in the scene after. It's a highlight.
The wordplay in the film, in fact, will be loved by the masses. The more discrete audience may turn its nose up, but correctness can be damned. Dabangg is a thorough entertainer, and unflinching at that, the kinds audiences lapped up in umpteen films in the seventies and eighties.

Remember Amar Akbar Anthony? You may smirk at three brothers, separated as children, all giving blood to their blind mother at the same time without any of them knowing the other's identity. But you enjoyed it nonetheless. Dabangg falls in a similar category.

In spite of the film's 'dated' appeal, first-timer Kashyap gives Dabangg a novel treatment, which lends it zing. He plays to the gallery brazenly, but ensures the film is held together by a strong premise – that of a dysfunctional family that comes together in crisis. He has shot the action scenes with aplomb, kept the pace fast, and extracted great performances.
Many may find Dabangg formulaic and over-the-top – Salman's shirt ripping in the climax might leave you open-mouthed – but it does its job. If you had to describe the film in a single line, you could quote Dharmendra's character Veeru from the classic Sholay [incidentally co-written by Salman and Arbaaz's father, Salim Khan]: iss kahaani main drama hai, action hai, comedy hai, tragedy hai. Only now, you would have to end the dialogue with – 'aur issme Salman Khan hai.'
As Chulbul Pandey, Salman is in his element. Kashyap now enjoys an envious position among all of the actor's directors over two decades for giving him a character that does optimum justice to his persona, ability and star power. And Salman does a swell job of it too. If you're a fan, repeated viewings are assured.
In a scene where he describes his qualities, Chulbul says that he has in him a kind of 'pagalpan' [madness]. You can say the same about Dabangg too. It's slightly mad, and it's terribly entertaining.

Salman Khan DABANGG deletes words Buddha, Hindustan, already a hit!!
[10 Sep 2010]

Salman Khan-Sonakshi Sinha starrer flick 'Dabangg', which opens today across 1300 screens in the country, will be seen without Salman Khan's dialogue 'Main Koi Gautam Buddha nahi hoon' and word 'Hindustan' in 'Munni Badnam' number featuring sizzling hot sexy bombshell Malaika Arora Khan.

As the censor board had objected to Salman Khan's character using the name of 'Gautam Buddha' who is revered by millions of people across the world, it was changed to 'Main Koi good boy nahin hoon'. As far as other word 'Hindustan' in the popular number 'Munni Badnam' was concerned, it had not been objected by the censor board but there was a case pending in the court.

So the filmmakers thought it prudent to change the word 'Hindustan' with 'Policeistan'. Earlier, the line was 'Baat yeh aam hui, darling tere liye , Be-Hindustan hui, darling tere liye….'

But now this 'Hindustan' has been replaced with 'Policeistan', though the court is yet to pronounce its verdict in the matter. Sources close to makers say that Arbaaz Khan and company did not want any undue controversy about the flick, and hence removed the offending word on their own.

The film does have action sequences, but they hardly spill blood on the screen, and that was the saving grace in getting u/a certificate from the censor board.

In the meantime, theatre owners like Big Cinemas are on cloud nine as 'Dabangg' has seen one of the highest advance booking across ninety screens. They are expecting huge response in the first weekend (due to Eid and Ganapati festivals) and expecting a windfall even on the coming weekdays.

The movie is all set to create a new opening record at the single screens as well as multiplexes. The movie is especially strong in tier two cities across the country.

'Dabangg' is also being released at 300 screens across the non-traditional countries of the world like Germany, Holland, Norway, Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria, besides the traditional bastion of bollywood.

Besides getting excellent reviews, Salman Khan's 'Dabangg' has also got support from various quarters of the industry. For instance, Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that 'Munni Badnam' number from the movie was rocking and he really liked it. The thespian has wished Salman Khan and his movie all success at the box-office.

The success for Salman Khan's 'Dabangg' is more important in the domestic circuit as the offshore territories would hardly take on such a vendetta flick full with action and all that. They prefer Karan Johar's variety of mushy romantic or Punjabi wedding types with all the paraphernalia of Indian tradition and culture.

But given the fact that Salman Khan's earlier flick 'Wanted' was also of the same genre and depended mainly on domestic audiences, 'Dabangg' should also find its feet comfortably at the box office. In any case, the selling of music rights and satellite rights of the flick has already fetched a handsome amount for the producers.

Review: Dabangg 3/5 stars

(By: Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films NDTV)

Chulbul Pandey, co-written by writer-director Abhinav Kashyap and enacted by Salman Khan, is the most thunderously crackling character I've seen in a Bollywood film in months.

This lower-rung cop in small-town Uttar Pradesh is so larger than life that when he stands fully erect and enraged, his shirt rips off his body from the sheer force of his muscles-just like The Incredible Hulk.

Chulbul is cheerfully corrupt but not without honour. He steals from the bad guys and occasionally passes it on to the poor and calls himself Robin Hood Pandey.

He delivers killer one-liners, defeats dozens of armed gunmen with a water hose, does Rajnikant-like tricks with his Ray-Bans and charmingly bulldozes the local beauty into marrying him.

Chulbul Pandey is an unstoppable force of nature. And did I mention that he also makes fart jokes.

It's the role of a lifetime and Salman Khan bites into it like a starving man devours a feast. He inhabits it fully, strutting and swaggering and even, spoofing himself.

Like Amitabh Bachchan and Vijay, Shah Rukh Khan and Raj, the actor and character are a perfect fit. Chulbul Pandey is an absolute delight.
Like its hero, Dabangg doesn't bother with subtlety or sub-text. Taking a cue from the potboilers of the 1970s and the more recent bone-crunching street heroes being churned out of Chennai - you recall Gajini and Wanted - debutant director Abhinav Kashyap has created a purposefully loud masala movie.

The dialogues, co-written by Dilip Shukla, are unapologetic clap-traps; the action artfully choreographed by S Vijayan is comic-book - so in the midst of a battle, when a phone rings, Pandey pauses to admire its ring-tone - and the musical score by Sajid-Wajid is deafening enough to beat you into submission.

A lot of this - especially the rollicking item number Munni Badnam Hui by Lalit Pandit - is seriously good fun.

But the trouble is that these set-pieces of dialogue, dance and fight aren't connected to each other in any meaningful way.

Kashyap and Shukla have created an engaging character but they don't provide him an engaging narrative to play in.

Dabangg, about Chulbul's love-hate relationship with his stepfather and stepbrother, is a structural mess.

The first half is all set-up-each scene essentially being a showcase for Chulbul-so when interval arrives, you are still waiting for the story to begin.

When the story finally kicks in, it turns out to be a tired rehash of conniving politicians, familial misunderstanding and revenge.

The plot movement is random - anything is possible at anytime.

The supporting cast is limp-Arbaaz Khan, who has also produced the film, is consistently wooden; Sonu Sood keeps glowering and poor Vinod Khanna wears exactly two expressions: anger and helplessness.

There are too many songs and too, too much fighting, which becomes more gory and gratuitous as the film unfolds. Dabangg feels longer than it is and way more exhausting than it should.

Still I recommend that you see the film for the sheer pleasure of watching Salman Khan in top form.

And for the nicely smoldering Sonakshi who despite their difference in age and experience, holds her own effectively.

Dabangg ends with the promise of a sequel. I would be happy to see more of Chulbul Pandey. I only hope that Kashyap writes him a better script.

DABANGG ***
[09 Sep 2010]
STARRING

Salman Khan, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Mahie Gill, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Tinu Anand, Mahesh Manjrekar, Amitosh Nagpal, Murli Sharma and others.

DIRECTION

Abhinav Kashyap

STORY

The plot of the flick revolves around the character of Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), who is a fearless police officer in the backwaters of Lalganj in Uttar Pradesh. Chulbul Pandey has his own style of solving criminal cases and never hesitates in taking some monetary advantage of his official position.

However, this personality of Chulbul is the outcome of his troubled childhood. He lost his father at a very young age and then his mother Naini (Dimple Kapadia) marries Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna). Chulbul too comes with his mother to Prajapati's house.

The trouble began when Prajapti became father of a son through Naini, and thus had a step- brother to Chulbul. Obviously, Prajapati favored his own son and this was resented by Chulbul Pandey. Soon, Naini dies and Chulbul Pandey is totally disenchanted with his step- father and step- brother Makhanchand(Arbaaz Khan).

Troubled over Prajapati's behavior, Chulbul decides to take the reins of destiny in his own hands and severs all relations with Prajapati family. However, soon after Rajo enters the life of Chulbul Pandey.

Rajo(Sonakshi Sinha) is a village belle who has her own style of looking at life. Chulbul starts changing for her and now becomes less cynical about the world. He wants to share better things of life with Rajo.

But, bad elements in society won't not let him do that. One of them is Cheedi Singh (Sonu Sood), the youth politician of the area. He has his own selfish ends to meet and tries to use Chulbul Pandey's brother Makhanchand against him.

Makhanchand, who is a little dim-witted, unknowingly becomes a pawn in the larger game of Cheedi Singh. He creates artificial animosity between the two brothers and induces them to fight each other.

However, soon Makhanchand realizes the game plan of Cheedi Singh and approaches brother Chulbul Pandey about the same. Now, the brothers open a united front against Cheedi Singh.

What happens to Cheedi Singh and who wins the final game, forms the rest of the flick.

PERFORMANCE

Salman Khan, the macho Khan of bollywood who plays Chulbul Pandey, is at his best as far playing to the gallery is concerned. Every scene in the movie hinges on that terrific star power of Sallubhai, and he has come out with a winning performance.

Salman Khan's action sequences in the beginning and then in the finale with Sonu Sood is awe inspiring, to say the least. Salman Khan has tried every trick in the book to play the character as masses would love him to enact.

Despite of being a vendetta story like many others in the past, it is Salman Khan's towering presence and star power that makes the movie a slick action flick and a treat to watch.

Sonakshi Sinha, the gorgeous daughter of Shatrughan Sinha who plays the part of Rajo, comes out with a confident performance. As she had said earlier that she considered Salman Kahn as friend not godfather. You can see the truth of her statement in her confidence and poise during performance. She is not overawed by Salman Khan or anyone else for that matter.

Sonu Sood, the disciplined and brawny actor who plays the character of Cheedi Singh, has come out with a winning performance. His bare- bodied fight with Salman Khan in the finale is main highlight of the flick. Throughout the flick, Sonu has never allowed Salman to dominate him and that's not a mean achievement before Sallu.

Arbaaz Khan, who enacts the character of Makhanchand, plays his part well. Vinod Khanna in the character of Salman Khan's step-father, Prajapati, lives up to expectations. Malaika Arora Khan looks hot in 'Munni Badnam' track and the audiences would go ga ga over it.

Anupam Kher plays his part well. Mahesh Manjrekar is hardly there. Tinnu Anand, Mahie Gill, Murli Sharma etc play their part with efficiency. Others extend their able support to main cast of the flick.

The direction of Abhinav Kashyap is fine, and he is able to handle the subject with great fanfare. The movie as a whole comes out very entertaining and Abhinav shows his mastery in handling big stars like Salman Khan, Arbaaz, and Vinod Khanna etc. Anubhav is suitably restrained in emotional and dramatic sequences.

The stunt sequences by S Vijayan have come out with great finesse and form one of the main features of the flick. Similarly, Sajid-Wajid's musical scores add value to the whole venture. Two numbers 'Munni badnam' and 'Do naina' have already become very popular with the masses.

The cinematography by Mahesh Limaye gels well with the mood of the film. Pranav Dhiwar's editing is good and enhances the value of action sequences. Other production values are also good.

STARDUST VERDICT

The movie belongs to Salman Khan all the way. In fact, it is he who carries the flick on his shoulders through his star power. Sallubhai's mastery in playing to gallery is visible all over. Sonakshi Sinha and Malaika Arora provide glamorous relief to the flick from its breathtaking action sequences. An entertaining and paisa vasool experience for the masses.

Dabangg Rocks CP Berar And Rajasthan

Friday 10th September 2010 12.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dabangg has simply rocked the CP Berar and Rajasthan circuits. Some single screen theatres in CP Berar started shows at 6.00am and the response was earth shattering 100%. Rajasthan has seen the biggest release ever for a film by a distance and practically every centre is 100% leaving the trade in Rajasthan in awe. Salman Khan films always open well in Rajasthan but this is something out of the ordinary.

E Square in Pune has 6,300 tickets sold for Friday, 6,300 for Saturday and 6,300 for Sunday meaning weekend is already full and due to excessive demand from patrons who refuse to take no for an answer and the theatre will have to change its schedule this early into the week and add extra shows of Dabangg due to public demand.

Dabangg Review By Komal Nahta

Star cast: Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia.

Plot: Salman is a corrupt but golden-hearted police officer in a small town of U.P. He dotes on his mother (Dimple) but hates his stepfather (Vinod Khanna) and stepbrother (Arbaaz Khan). He is at loggerheads with the local politician, Sonu Sood, who sets the two half brothers against one another. Sonakshi is Salman's love interest in the film.

What's Good: Salman Khan's performance; the songs, particularly Munni badnaam huyi and Tere mast mast do nain; the action and stunts; the humour.

What's Bad: Not bad, but the story offers absolutely no novelty.

Verdict: Dabangg will rock at the box-office. A sureshot and a huge hit!

Loo break: Not really!

Dabangg (UA) is the story of a fearless but corrupt police officer, Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), stationed at Lalganj in Uttar Pradesh. A Robin Hood by nature, he loves his mother (Dimple Kapadia), but can't stand his stepfather, Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna), and stepbrother, Makhanchan Pandey alias Makhi (Arbaaz Khan).

Chulbul Pandey falls in love with Rajo (newfind Sonakshi Sinha) who won't marry him as she has her drunkard-father (Mahesh Manjrekar) to look after. On the professional front, Chulbul is daggers drawn with politician Chhedi Singh (Sonu Sood), also called Netaji.

For his own ulterior motives, Chhedi Singh puts Makhi against Chulbul. He also makes Makhi commit petty crimes which soon turn to heinous ones. Meanwhile, Rajo has gotten married to Chulbul Pandey. Also, Chulbul has lost his mother and he disowns his stepfather and stepbrother.

Suddenly, one day, Makhi learns of a secret from Chhedi Singh, which shocks him terribly. Does he let Chulbul Pandey in to the secret? Does Chulbul bury the hatchet with his stepfather and half brother?

In terms of story, Dilip Shukla and Abhinav Kashyap offer no novelty as films with similar plot lines ' family drama, mother's death, love story between a police officer and a simple girl, enmity between local politician and police officer, fight to finish etc. ' have been seen in the past. But the presentation is so fresh, the humour is so new, the characterisation of the main protagonist is so endearing, the performance of Salman Khan is so wonderful, the music is so outstanding, and the action is so brilliantly composed that the lack of novelty hardly becomes a sore point.

The screenplay also may not be the most ideal screenplay or one which offers novelty but it is, at least, clear and conveys everything in a straight and simple manner. Only thing, since it is the story of one police officer, there is no bigger or larger issue, something which could've been incorporated by the writers. However, the writers have taken care to add a touch of sentiments and a bit of romance in the action fare ' and what's more, the emotions and the romance work like magic.

Salman Khan lives his role and is the life of the film.

What also work fabulously well are the humour and the stunts in the film. Examples of fun scenes which will evoke a lot of laughter: Chulbul Pandey breaking into a dance while doing dare-devil stunts, whenever he hears the ring tone of the mobile phone of a henchman of the villain, the ring tone being the tune of a hit song of an earlier film starring the actor (Salman Khan) himself; when Chulbul tries to woo Rajo; the high-voltage scene in which Chulbul talks about making holes in Chhedi Singh's body; the scenes of Chulbul when he refers to a demeaning word and, taking cue from it, enquires after the well-being of some person in a derogatory manner; and several other scenes. Likewise, the stunts, composed by Vijayan, are absolutely breathtaking and supremely mass-appealing. In fact, the action scenes will win thunderous applause from the masses and the youth.

Salman Khan lives his role and is the life of the film. He is so extraordinary that it seems, he was born to play this role and that the role was written for him and him only. Besides his endearing acting, he throws the right kind of attitude to carry off the role. He has looked like a million bucks, handsome as ever! For his fans, this film will go down as one of his best ' as far as the film as well as his performance are concerned. His dances are lovely. The climax scene, in which his shirt tears off, will meet with such thunderous applause that it will bring the house down. There are several other scenes of Salman which will meet with large rounds of applause. Sonakshi Sinha makes a startlingly confident debut. She is camera-friendly and performs very ably and in a very natural manner. She uses her beautiful eyes excellently to convey her feelings. Sonu Sood excels. He acts with effortless ease; and his physique has been exploited very well. Even his dancing is perfect for his character. Arbaaz Khan delivers a fine performance and looks every inch the character he plays. Vinod Khanna lends good support. Dimple Kapadia acts ably. Mahesh Manjrekar, Tinnu Anand and Mahie Gill make their marks. Anupam Kher is sincere in a brief role. Om Puri is wasted in an almost inconsequential role.

Abhinav Kashyap's direction deserves distinction marks. He has narrated the routine subject in such a refreshing manner that it is difficult to believe, this is his maiden attempt at direction. Mahesh Limaye's camerawork complements the director's vision fabulously well. Vijayan's action scenes and stunts may be gimmicky but they are the stuff which will drive the masses crazy and will ensure repeat audiences.

Yet another highlight of the film is its music (Sajid Wajid and Lalit Pandit). Every song is a wonderfully composed number so that the three music directors emerge as three additional heroes of the film. 'Munni badnaam huyi' (Lalit Pandit) is already a rage and it wouldn't be wrong to say that it has become the new national anthem. Its picturisation (choreographer: Farah Khan) is to die for! The racy tune and the sexy picturisation on Malaika Arora-Khan (who has danced extraordinarily) will ensure repeat audiences for the film. The interlude dance movements by Salman Khan and by Sonu Sood are just too enjoyable. 'Tere mast mast do nain' is another hit number. 'Humka peeni hai' and the title track are excellent. The dance movement in the title song, in which Salman and the dancers shake the waist bands of their trousers in a typical fashion is lovely. The lyrics of 'Munni badnaam huyi' (Lalit Pandit), 'Tere mast mast do nain' (Faiz Anwar) and the title song (Jalees Sherwani) are excellent. Sandeep Shirodkar's background score is of a good standard. Pranav V. Dhiwar's editing and Wasiq Khan's sets are both appropriate.

On the whole, Dabangg may be a routine subject but its other plus points will ensure that it proves a runaway hit from North to South and East to West. It will be loved by the masses and classes, the young and the old, the girls and the boys, the men and the women. Business in single-screen cinemas will be historic, of course, but collections in multiplexes will also be outstanding. This one will click in big, medium and small centres, with the Eid festival and the heavy anticipation only adding to the business.
