"Dr Twinkle its 10 am app nay toh 9 am par report karna tha" Dr Mehra said as Twinkle was late again.
"Sir woh sir main" Twinkle tried to explain
"Dr Twinkle app idhar main nay toh app ko prescription drugs lenay kay liay bejha tha na" Kunj walked in and said
"Dr Kunj app yahan?" Dr Mehra asked
"Ji woh sir main nay hi Dr Twinkle ko penicillin lenay kay liay bheja tha hospital ki inventory main medicine khatam ho gayi thi"
"Koi baat nahi Dr Kunj theek hain Dr Twinkle you are excused for today but please try to be punctual. Carry on with your work then" Dr Mehra said and walked away
"Thank you sir par is ski zarorat nahi thi" Dr Twinkle said
"App meri intern hain so you are my responsibility and everything you do affects me as well. Waisay app har roz late kyun ho jati hain koi khaas waja?"
"Sir woh mera ghar kafi door hain aur time par panchany kay liay I have to get up early. Aur mujhay subah uthnay main problem hoti hain" Twinkle tried to explain
"Chalay you will get used to it but please do try to come on time hum doctors hain aur humray liay har pal qeematy hota hain a single minute can make a huge difference in a patient's life"
"Don't worry sir I will try my best" She promised
They both walked towards the trauma ward. Twinkle still couldn't believe that Kunj had stepped in to save her. She had been sure that Dr Mehra would have scolded her a lot for being late but Dr Kunj had saved her by taking the blame on himself. At least he was good at making excuses. These thoughts were circulating in her mind just when a new patient arrived.
"30 year old male involved in a road accident. Multiple lacerations, punctured lung and broken ribs. Risk of internal bleeding needs immediate surgery" The nurse informed Twinkle
Twinkle looked at his vitals and status report.
"He needs to be operated on right away. Prep the ot I will inform Dr Kunj" Twinkle said
"But Dr Icu has no vacancy we have to shift this man to another hospital" The nurse informed her
"We don't have time the patient can die" Twinkle said
"Dr Twinkle what's the matter why are you so tensed?" Kunj said. He had just returned after making a phone call
"Doctor yeh iss patient ko farun surgery ki zarorat hain par yeh nurse keh rahi hain we need to shift him to another hospital" Twinkle told him
"Sir we don't have any spots in the icu you can check the list of patients I don't think we can move anyone" The nurse said
"Let me see yeh Mr Aryan ko ward main shift karday" Kunj said after looking at the list
"Sir yeh dr mehra kay patient hain. It will be better if you talk to him yourself"
"Dekhyi I don't have that much time app Dr mehra ko meray behalf main inform karday aur jaldi say OT prep karay" Kunj said to the nurse.
The nurse returned after a few minutes and told Kunj that Dr Mehra wanted to meet him in his office.
"Dr Twinkle app patient kay vitals monitor karay main abhi ahata hun" Kunj instructed her
When he didn't return after a few minutes Twinkle got worried she decided to check on him. She made her way towards Dr Mehra's office. She could hear loud voices coming from his cabin. She was surprised to recognise Dr Kunj's voice. He was fuming with anger and was having a heated discussion with Dr Mehra. She had never heard him shouting at someone something bad must have happened she hid beside the office window and strained her ears to listen.
"Dr Kunj app samaj nahi rahay Mr Aryan humari board of trustees kay aik trustee kay relative hain hum unhay nahi move kar saktay. Income tax kay issue hain" Dr Mehra said
"Sir hum hospital chala rahay hain hotel nahi kay app tax evasion jasi schemes use karay" Kunj said
"Zuban sambal kay baat karay Dr Kunj yeh mat bhooliyay kay yeh trustees he apka pay check sign kartay hain"
"I don't care sir iss waqt as a doctor meray liay meray patient ki jaan sab say zyada important hain. App trustees ko inform kar day this is my decision main apnay zimay leta hun. Zyada say zyada who mujhay nikal day gay toh nikal day. I am going to operate on my patient" Kunj said in a non -negotiable tone.
He walked out of the room and noticed Dr Twinkle standing near the window. This woman he thought to himself and smiled.
"Dr Twinkle abb app waha hi kadhi rahay gi ya scrub in bhi karay gi surgery kay liay" Kunj smiled at her
"Sir woh meri app ki baatien sunay ki koi intention nahi thi par I must say I have seen few people who are as sincere and dedicated as you are"
"Thank you now please scrub in for the surgery" Kunj said
After a gruelling 7 hours surgery they were able to save the patient's life.
"Dr Twinkle I must say kay ap nay last surgery say kafi improve kiya hain. You maintained your composure good job" He complemented her
"Thank you Sir" Twinkle said. She was so happy Dr Kunj had finally praised her. He was such a different doctor he did not care about money or fame.
"Sir if you don't mind can I ask you something?"
"Sure go ahead" Kunj said
"Why did you leave U.S? Mera matlab hain kay you are really talented toh app ko toh US kay kisi bhi achay hospital main job mil jati"
"Dr Twinkle I wanted to come back and serve my own country. Meray aur app ki tarah kay saaray log bas iss mulk say bhair janay ki race main lagay hain. We fail to understand that are own country needs us the most. Who saray countries toh developed hain par we should work on our own country's development" Kunj explained
"I am impressed Dr Kunj it is rare to find people like you nowadays especially in this profession"
"I am amazed too main nay ajj tak aisay doctor nahi deki jo roz late ho" Kunj smiled at her
"Doctor I have already apologised for that"
"Listen Dr Twinkle I won't save you every day. You need to get up early if you want to work with me" Kunj said
"I will be on time tomorrow sir"
"I doubt it par let's see. You should go now kafi time hogaya hain" Kunj said
Twinkle called Chinki as normally they used to back home together.
"Oh no"
"Kia hua Dr Twinkle any problem?" He asked
"Sir woh meri friend chali gayi so now I have to take a taxi"
"Don't worry it's really late I will drop you let's go"
"But sir"
"No buts that is an order Dr Twinkle" He said.
They both made their way to his car. Like a true gentleman Kunj opened the door for her. She sat in the passenger seat and looked at him. Without his lab coat he looked younger nobody could tell that he was two years older than her. She knew without a doubt that he was a wonderful human being his every gesture was attracting her towards him. She kept on staring.
"Dr Twinkle sorry abb hum hospital main nahi hain toh Twinkle meray face par kuch laga hain jo app itni daar she mujhay hi dekh rahi hain?" He asked playfully his eyes still on the road
"Woh sir bas main dekh rahi thi kay you look different without your labcoat" She looked away clearly embarrassed with herself. This was going to be a long car ride she couldn't wait to get home.
Chapter 4
"Twinkle can I ask you something?" Kunj asked his eyes still on the road
"Sure sir go ahead"
"Don't call me sir hospital kay bhair formality ki zarorat nahi" Kunj said
"Sorry adadt hogayi hain"
"Why did you become a doctor?" He asked
"My father was a doctor. His name was Rajesh Taneja he was a famous oncologist he died a few years back in the U.S"
"Wait so you are Rajesh Taneja's daughter the rajesh taneja woh jin ki American physicians journal more than 10 publications hain. Aur un ko toh national award bhi mil chukka hain" Kunj rambled on and on
"Wah Dr Kunj app nay toh meray abu ka pura resume suna diya. I am impressed"
"Main un say mil chukka hu Twinkle he came into our university as a guest lecturer. He was so down to earth and dedicated. Please don't mind app un ki beti bilkul nahi lagti" He said
"Don't worry sir I mean Dr Kunj I get that a lot. Sometimes it is a lot of pressure to be such a renowned person's daughter"
"No I am sorry Twinkle I forgot that everyone is their own person we are not defined by who our parents are. Waisay bhi app kay aik record koi nahi todh sakta" Kunj said
"Woh kia Dr Kunj" She asked no matter how hard she tried she couldn't just call him by his first name. It seemed highly inappropriate to her.
"I mean app kay late ahanay ka record" Kunj teased her
"App phir shudu ho gayay here I thought that you would have let that thing go but no now you are going to keep on teasing me" Twinkle huffed in anger
"Agar app kal jaldi ahagayi toh iss baaray main socha ja sakta hain" Kunj said
"Is that a challenge?"
"App jo marzi samjhay. I think app ka ghar ahgaya hain" He stopped the car and pointed towards her house
"Dr Kunj app ko toh main kal dekh lu gi. You just wait"
"Aur idhar main thank you expect kar raha tha remember reporting time is 9 am kal please jaldi uth jayay ga. See you tomorrow" He said and restarted the car
"Bye" She said. Twinkle kept on standing outside her house until his car had disappeared from her view. Dr Kunj was such an enigma. She had never spent time with him outside the hospital but now she realized that she enjoyed his company. Twinkle was dreading the end of the month when her duty would be reassigned. She felt like she wanted to be his intern forever. He had even met her father but unlike other people he had respected the fact she was her own person. Her entire medical career she had been overshadowed and judged based on her father's reputation. She was thinking about him and couldn't stop smiling.
"Kia hua puttar lagta hain ajj ka din buhat acha tha" Leela said noticing her cheerful mood
"Ha maa woh Dr Kunj itnay achay hain"
"Hah kitnay achay hain main sab janti hu andar ki khabar hain suna hain kafi good looking hain" Leela said
"Maa aisi bhi koi baat nahi woh kaam bhi buhat acha kartay hain"
"Theek hain abb choro in baaton ko tum nay khana khaya?" Leela asked
"Nahi maa kia hain khanay main buhat zor ki bhook lagi hain"
"Chalo tum fresh ho kar ahao main khana lagwati hun" Leela told her
After having dinner she quickly went to bed. She would not let Dr Kunj win this challenge after all she was Twinkle Taneja who rarely used to lose.
To Leela's surprise Twinkle was up by 7 am.
"Ajj yeh chamaktar kaisay ho gaya" Leela exclaimed
"Sab Dr Kunj ki waja say main yeh challenge nahi harnay wali"
"Abb to hiss Kunj say milna he padhay ga aisa kya jadu kia hain uss nay meri beti pay"Leela said
"Maa please jaldi nasta day na"
"Acha puttar yeh lay shukar hain waiguru ka jo Kunj ki wajah say teri kuch aadatien toh theek hui warna tu to jhalli hi rahti" Leela said
After having breakfast Twinkle left for the hospital. For the first time ever she had arrived half an hour earlier.
"Good morning sir"
"Dr Twinkle app iss waqt par abhi toh 9 o clock nahi huay" Dr Mehra was surprised to see her
"Janti hu sir par jaldi uth gayi thi toh traffic kay dar seh jaldi nikal ahayi"
"I hope you maintain this habit Dr Twinkle. See you later"
Twinkle walked into Kunj's office he was not there yet he arrived shortly afterwards.
"Main nay kaha than a sir kay main time par ahao gi" She said proudly
"Wow Dr Twinkle I am impressed guess I lost the challenge"
Just then they heard their names being called to the emergency room.
"Road accident case sir a couple was involved. The husband is in a critical condition he needs immediate surgery the wife has suffered minor bruises but she is pregnant so need to check the baby's vitals and prep her for C section." The nurse informed them
"App farun resident gynac ko inform karay takay she operates on the wife. Dr Twinkle you will assist me during the husband's surgery let's go" Kunj said
Both of them scrubbed in and began the surgery. After two hours though the patient flat lined and they were unable to save him. This was the first time somebody had died during surgery ever since she had started working with Dr Kunj. Twinkle used to think that they made a formidable team.
Kunj could sense that Twinkle was sad and worried.
"Dr Twinkle app theek hain?"
"Nahi sir hum doctors bhi kitnay stupid hotay hain yeh sochatay hain kay sab kuch humray haath main hain par sir asal main toh sab kuch upar walay kay haath main hain. Hum toh sirf kamzoor insaan hain jo uss ki marzi kay beghair kuch nahi kar saktay"
"Dr Twinkle app ko yad hain app nay muhay meray first day par kia kaha tha kay hum doctors hain miracle workers nahi aur death toh humrahy profession ka part hain. Hum har kisi ko toh nahi becha saktay woh toh na mumkin hain par agar hum thoday say logo ki zindagi bacha saktay hain toh humay himmat nahi harni chayiay. Take care main app ko rounds kay baad milta hun" Kunj said
She made her way to the cafeteria where she was greeted by her friends Yuvraj and Chinki.
"Kia hua Twinky tera chera itna uthra hua kyun hain. Dr Kunj nay kuch kha?" Yuvi asked
"Nahi woh bas our patient died"
"Oh no that's really sad chalo tumhay coffee ki zarorat hain"Chinki said
"Mood nahi hain"
"Come on Twinkle lay lo na coffee ajj kal rarely tum humray saath time spend karti ho har waqt bas Dr Kunj kay peechay hi lagi rahti ho" Yuvi said
She finally agreed to have coffee but she couldn't erase the man's image from her mind she decided to check on his wife and child. The man's wife had given birth to a son but his wife was in a catatonic state after learning about her husband's death. Seeing her in that state further increased Twinkle's sadness. She was appalled by the lady's relatives. One of them was calling the child manhoos or unlucky as his father had died the same day he was born. She politely asked them to step out of the room.
"Dekhay aunty main app ka dard samaj sakti hu par ap apna ghussa aik nani si jaan par mat niklay. Aur app kia keh rahi thi kay bacha manhoss hain arey bachay toh khuda ka roop hotay hain phir woh manhoss kaisay ho sakta hain. App ko chayiay kay apni bahu ko iss muskil waqt main support karay na kay uss ko tanay day" Twinkle said.
The relatives were clearly ashamed by their behaviour and apologised to Twinkle.
"Aunty app mujh say nahi apni bahu say mafi mangay" Twinkle said.
She looked through the bedroom door. The woman had finally started responding after hearing her child crying. Twinkle looked at her she did not realize that she had tears in her eyes.
"Dr Twinkle agar app khud roy gi toh patients ko kaisay treat karay gi?" Kunj asked
"Dr Kunj app nai sir bas main soch rahi thi kay iss bachay ko ktini muskil ho gi apnay baap kay beghair"
"Dr Twinkle I can understand your pain. I admire the way you handled the relatives and told them what they deserved to hear. Acha abb app yay anasao saaf kar lay" Kunj said and handed her his handkerchief.
"Thank you sir"
"No problem Dr Twinkle" He said and walked away.
She looked at the handkerchief and the syllables KS were engraved on the corner the same syllables that were slowly getting engraved in her heart.
