Lakshya, in his way (A smart way I must say) is doing his best for Ragini, who deserves it once you take off the twisted evil mask she has been handed by the circumstances. I'm glad that Lakshya here is exactly what someone like Ragini needs, understanding, witty and mature. Good for her and him.

Swara and Sanskar are taking things on their sweet slow pace too. I like the speed you've given to their growing dynamics, neither too fast nor too slow. Both are half in love with each other...just 'haan hai baki' type.

I really love your writing style. Continue soon and thanks for the PM :)

Hey, Sakura, thank you so much. 🤗

Ragya slightly more complicated than Swasan, so getting a little more airtime, but they have some underlying tensions too...

really good update as always

Sanskaar is both protective of Swara and a little possessive as well, in spite of himself.
And Swara - well, she can't say no... what to do.

Thanks so much!

Chapter 17

Sometime during the third bhajan of the session, a worry-worm entered Ragini's head. Lakshya was home, and Swara had stayed back as well! oh, why had she made it easy for them to be alone in the house? And Sanskaar had left early to attend to some work as well!

The minute they returned, she went up to their room to check on Lakshya - and found him snoozing on the bed, with everything as it should be. There was a plate of scattered matri on the table along with two soiled cups of tea, his book was lying next to him with a bookmark placed about halfway through... she let out a breath of relief. He seemed to have spent the day exactly like he had said he would.

When she went downstairs, Swara was in the kitchen helping Parineeta. Her phone was lying on the dining table and Ragini palmed it quickly, and scanned her call history - there were a couple of records for Husna today! Swara had called her, missed her, Husna had called back and they had spoken for about 25 minutes... someone was coming! Quickly Ragini put the phone back just as had found it...

As it happened, it was not Swara's deep cunning that helped preserve their deception... since talk of her school friend had come up in the morning, she had genuinely wanted to talk to her. She'd called her after she had spoken to Lakshya and then Husna had called back and they'd had a wonderful catch-up session.

***

Lakshya's chance to put his plan into action came a couple of days later. It was evening, and the younger set were sitting in the drawing room before dinner - the elders had all gone to a wedding in the biraadari, Annapurna and Sujata quite decked up to keep up their end of things.

Adarsh and Sanskaar were talking shop, until Uttara pleaded with them to stop. Slowly, everyone had congregated... Swara joined them, sitting on a moda next to Uttara, Parineeta had told the cook what to make for dinner and then came sat next to Adarsh... and Ragini came slowly down the stairs.

"Aao, Ragini, come sit," Parineeta smiled up at her, "Dinner is ready in half an hour."

Ragini came to the group and looked about wondering where to sit, when Lakshya moved his feet off the sofa and patted the place next to him. Ragini blushed and went to him a bit demurely.

Uttara was telling Swara about her course and life in the US... Swara gave Lakshya a quick look. He gave her a slight nod.

"Student life in the US sounds exciting!" Swara said, as if responding to Uttara, "One of my closest friends, Debarata, went to study Biotechnology there... Indiana, if I remember right."

"Kaun, kaun?" said Lakshya suddenly, as if he had just tuned in.

Swara looked at him. "A friend of mine from the badi, Debabrata Bhattacharya - we grew up together, went to the same college. Then he went abroad to do his MS."

"Ragini, this was the guy you mentioned the other day, right?" he asked, turning to her.

"Haan!" said Ragini, casting an enigmatic look at Swara, "he and Swara were very close."

"One of your boyfriends, Swara?" drawled Sanskaar, getting into the act.

Swara started laughing. "No way! We were just buddies. In fact..." she stopped.
"Bolo na! In fact what?" said Parineeta, unwittingly aiding the story.
"In fact, he had the biggest crush on Ragini! He was so fida over her!" Swara laughed.
"Yeh kya keh rahi ho, Swara!" Ragini frowned at her.

"Haan, Ragini - didn't you ever notice?" She told the others, "Debo would go chabad chabad with everyone but one glimpse of Ragini and he would just shut up... couldn't even speak in her presence! Daadi was very strict with Ragini, you know, wouldn't let her mix with the rest of us freely... otherwise he would have surely tried to line-maro and patao her!"

"Achcha! Very very interesting!" Lakshya cast Ragini a sidelong glance and leaned forward, ostensibly to hear more.

Swara went on, "I was always hanging out with a mixed group, but to tell you the truth, I was always just one of the boys. It was Ragini the Unattainable' that they tried to impress. She was so beautiful even back then, whenever she appeared on the balcony, that's it, a whole lot of boys in our baadi would start sighing deeply!"

Everyone laughed and turned to look at Ragini who flushed pink at these revelations. "Come on, Swara!" she remonstrated but feebly.

"Next time this Debabrata comes to Kolkata, na Swara, just let me know..." Lakshya said mock menacingly.

Swara laughed at him, "Kyun, you'll challenge him to a duel for being Ragini's one-time aashiq, is it?"

"No..." said Lakshya, poker-faced, "but I'll buy a burkha for her."

Everyone cracked up at that... and got up for dinner, which was served.
