"When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve."
Ernest Hemingway,
A Farewell to Arms

Ramayan is all about the human relationships and the War between Love and responsibility. I sometimes feel It is the sacrifices they made that are loved so much , remembered so much . No doubt we remember Ramayan for its exemplary characters like Ram , Sita , Lakshman . But I feel , Ramayan is a tale full of sacrifices , some appreciated some went unnoticed .
Basically , it is my frnds in the forum forced me to think this way . Ranju , Asu , Aayu , Manas , Swati credit goes to you ppl 😉
I tried mentioning some of them here .

King Dasharath-
All life he loved his family . Especially Ram, but he got to send him to exile for 14 yrs as a result of his vachan . He could have broken his promise , bt he didnt ! He chose his principles over his Love . Not to forget , he also sacrifices his daughter Shantha . A Daughter is most loved by her father no matter what .

Kousalya -
She was first wife of Dasharath . She had to share her husband;s love with two other queens . Isnt it enough of a sacrifice ? Moreover she has seen her daughter marrying a sage , leaving all the bhog-bhagya behind .

Kaikeyi -
Though she is remembered for her selfishness . there is more to it. She loved Rama selflessly , Ofcourse she was over powered while sending Ram . But just think what she must have gone through when she realised her mistake . More to it Sita's apharan might have pricked her heart more and more . And Bharat hated her all these yrs .

Sumithra -
The youngest Queen . How great of her , she sent his son with bharat in his childhood , and then allows lakshman to accompany Ram during exile . Not even for a second she fought for the rights of her Sons rather she considered it as her responsibility and Fortune .
She was never ambitious about anything . She is my personal fav .

Janak and Sunaina -
They made the biggest sacrifice. They have got no sons . And above that all their daughters married on the same day and same mandap . All the 4 left Mithila at the same time , What must have they gone through ? Mithili kitni kaali pad gayi hogi inke jaane ke baad.
Only they know what they went through during the bidai time .

Bharat -
Bharat could have been the King . He could have lived happily ever after with his wife and family forgetting about his brother Ram . bt he didnt ! He chose to sacrifice everything for the sake of his brother . He went against his own mother . He never ever wanted to be King even after being provided with the opportunity . He went to forest , Pleaded Ram to come back . Ruled ..no Served the kingdom for all those yrs just being Ram's representative .

Urmila -
She is considered as forgotten heroine of Ramayan . SHe loved him . who would not ? Every wife loves her husband and wants his support for every moment in her life . But she was rejected . Yes , Rejected . She wanted to accompany Lakshman during exile , bt he chose his brother on his wife . She was devastated , the feeling that your husband wants to serve his brother and hence cant give you any sort of importance in his life . Could have killed her . Only she knows how she survived all those yrs .
She could have returned to Mithila , bt she didnt ..she lived the life of an aesthetic during all those yrs even after that rejection . This requires a Big heart and Brave Soul.

Lakshman -
He was his shadow . He left his wife , his Love and accompanied his brother to Vanvaas. Served his Bhaiya Bhabhi like a servent for 14 yrs . He was a prince right ? He need not do all that . He could have easily escaped out of it . Actually he himself put it in .
Not only his wife , he sacrificed his Mother's Love as well . He chose the tough path . He chose to be his brother's shadow no matter what . Whether it be Vanvaas or War !

Ram -
He was selfless . He lived for principles not emotions . He is exemplary . He went for vanvaas with no complains against anyone . He stood on his words .
When Sita apharan took place . He could have easily forgotten her and married someone else , is it that difficult for a to be King to get a new wife ? Not at all . bt as I mentioned "WHen you love , you wish to do things for " he never forgotten her . He Loved her immensely . He went Lanka . Killed Raavan and got her back .
Thats not the end . He was again tested , he sent Sita , Pregnant Sita to vanvaas all over again , whatever may be the reason. His emotions and feelings and lost the battle for his principles .

Sita -
I really cant express her Sorrow . This Lady loved her husband immensely . She accompanied him to vanvaas . she could have chosen to stay back and went back to Mithila for 14 yrs and might have time passed easily . She chose to be with him . She Loved him after all . then her Apharan . Being kidnapped , Away from family , Away from home , You dunno whether anyone knows that you are kidnapped by this Raavana and that you are here in lanka . With all the demons roaming around you . Raavana threatening you in all possible ways . uff ...She was really brave enough to stay in that Ashok vatika for 10 long months .
After that , she is saved , finally she is back to her husband . She is asked to give AgniPareeksha . ! Really ? Yes , she did and without a hesitation . Only she knows how her heart broke into pieces on learning that her husband didnt trust her . Or may be she knows that Ram trusts her but still she got to do it to prove herself for the society , what a pity ? She is tested for the sake of society . Bt still she chose not to complain.

SHe was pregnant . What his husband gifted her ? Vanvaas . Vanvaas all over again but this time it is forever . Indeed a bigger one . Once again her patience was tested . Again she could have gone to Mithila bt she didnt . She accepted it . Never complained , She managed her incomplete family being a single mother . She def had some guts . Such a brave soul she must have been .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay , I never wrote something before this . This is my first attempt ever .
We dont know what is right and what is wrong !
It is my opinion that those situations were created so that Ram can lead his way following his Dharma . It is all pictured to show us . Teach some morals .
These things can never happen in reality .
These are created so that they become exemplary.
Such a lengthy post . thankyou for bearing me .
I am sure there are many gramatical/typo mistakes , Kindly ignore them and enjoy the essence of the post !

P.S- DO SHARE YOUR VIEWS . I am waiting to read them all .

Love,
Sruthi

Loved yr post Sruthi. Yes we remember Ramayan more because of the sacrifices. Some might say that Sri Ram didn't do any miracles. But what he did look simple on the surface but very very difficult to do. He didn't use his divinity to overcome obstacles and hardships. But showed us human beings how to lead life jut by following the path of righteousness.

Sita was not asked to give Agneepateeksha because Ram doubted her chastity.
Sometime during their exile period Ram removed Sita from her body. Ravan actually took a Chhavvi of Sita. Later when she came back she entered the fire to get the real Sita.

Dashrath did whatever he could to stop Ram from going to exile. So far I know he told Ram that the promise was given my me not you and you are not bound to fulfill my words.

I am glad you liked it ! So true , I Inspire Ram more as a Human being than being a GOD !
I read it in ablog , Actually Valmiki mentioned Ram as a great human being but it is in tulsidas's RamcharitManas Ram is considered as incarnation of Lord Vishnu .
Dont knw much about it .

Bharat did what was right. The thing is today when we read about these characters we think they did something exceptional but the truth is these people belong to a time period when people valued principles over material gains. It was almost fixed that the first born will be the King so Bharat was right in recognising that he had no right on the throne.

Don't say sorry, Ramayan is such a vast epic that only few people know about it in full detail.

Someone I know who has great knowledge about the epic says that in fact Sita was never a victim.
