Someone I know who has great knowledge about the epic says that in fact Sita was never a victim.

Can you pls explain more . I am eager to learn about this !

I wish I could but I can't.
Firstly I don't know much about the epic.
Secondly I believe it also largely depends on person particular's views and interpretation of text. As per the epic Sita was incarnation of Laxmi, she was a goddess then how can she be vulnerable ?
Many believe she was doing maya when she let Ravan take her to Lanka, she took birth in Sita's form to become cause of Ravan's death. Sita was so strong that she could lift the divine bow with one hand, the same bow which Ravan couldn't even move. Do you think Ravan was capable of taking her forcefully if she didn't intent to go on first place ?

Who knows her second exile was also planned / Intented so that Ram and Sita's story could be written. She lived in Valmikis' ashram who penned the story which has been a source of inspiration for many. The writing down of their story made sure that it reaches to masses, centuries after they were gone.

She lived till she handed Luv Kush to Ram after which the purpose of her birth was completed and she left.

A thoughtful post shruti! Sumedha you are absolutely right ,Sita could lift the Shiv dhanush easily, she could have protected herself easily .She was after all the incarnation of Lakshmi .But she came on this earth to help her husband to destroy evil and reestablish the core values that the society was losing then. In the Valmiki ramayan' there is no mention of Lakshman rekha or her using harsh words to him.she forces him to go and help his brother...Also there is a mention that Ravan could not have kidnapped Sita as she was...so She asked Agni dev to grant her sanctuary till Ram could destroy the Asuras. As a way to help him in his endeavor she left her chavvi behind. So the Agni pareksha was a means to get her back.
I have always been impressed with the woman characters in the Ramayan from Kaushalya,Kaikeyi, Sumitra,Sunaina to Sita, Urmila and Mandavi. They were strong enough to keep their family and even country together in times of need.

True Ramayana is about sacrifices but what I can't understand is when Ram decides to send off Sita forever isn't he breaking his wedding vows whereby he promised to provide for her and his children?
Also when Sita decides to go back to mother earth isn't she as well breaking her vows by leaving Ram forever? She's completely justified I feel after what she has been put through.
So Ram sacrifices his love for his wife in order to prove he's a great king as this is what the praja wanted...
Anyway would be interesting to see how cvs present this side of the story as in the previous Ramayana shows they've never really explained the reasoning behind those major events.
It would be great also to see the reactions in Mithila.

Yeah right. Sita was too pious for Ravan to even touch her but if he couldn't touch her then how could he kidnap her. Hence they decided to give real Sita to Agnee and only keep her shadow till their task is completed. So actually Siya Ram created a grand illusion for Ravan. They made sure that he was able to take Sita with him. I was telling Shruti that Ram couldn't have attacked Ravan without a strong reason and so Sita became that reason
