Redemption 290

Hell and Heaven are states of being, not destinations. They are worlds we carry within.

Rudran held the giant Boris Vanya easily in one hand and then shaking his head in contempt, he threw the wounded man a few feet away from him and said " I have fought with men much smaller and weaker than you and respected them for their courage even as I killed them. Your sneaky punch while distracting me was real cheap Boris. That shows, what a coward you are and that you are just a bully who has always had his way in life.

Rudran stepped back and removed the jacket he was wearing and dropping it to the floor, beckoned Boris with both his hands " Get up and fight like a man and die like a man."

Boris Vanya's face contorted more with rage than the pain from his broken ribs on the right side and slowly he stood up and raising his hands in a boxers pose shuffled forward towards Rudran and the fight began although the end was a foregone conclusion.

Both men threw punches and Rudran felt the giant's power as it thudded on his leanly muscled shoulders and arms and with his elbows protecting his sides, he danced, jabbed and fought with Boris.

The first punch that Rudran had thrown at the right side of Boris Vanya's body was the clincher for the broken ribs now began to poke into the lung and then soon punctured it and the giant unable to breathe properly went down to his knees grimacing in pain and began to cough up blood, bright red and pure and they poured down and stained the shiny white marble floor.

Rudran stood with his arms by his side and stared down at the fallen Russian mobster, who raised his head and whispered " You are not human. You are not a God. So, who are you, stranger?"

Rurdran calmly " I am not totally human but have more humanity in me than you have in your body. And most certainly, I am not a God."

With a smile " But many of my people call me an Angel and if I am that, then you are a demon."

Boris nodded and smiled sadly and then his knees gave way and he slowly dropped to the floor and began to drift away into the other realm called death.

Rudran crouched by his side and whispered " Do one thing, one good thing before you go. Maybe, just maybe God might be kinder with you and not judge you harshly and in the manner in which you need to be judged for all your sins. Redeem yourself with one good act in your final moments."

Boris Vanya smiled and pointed to his inside pocket of the coat he was wearing and Rudran reached in and brought out the dying man's phone and looked at him.

Outside the building, Mishka the head security man's phone rang and he listened carefully to his leader's commands and then handed the phone to little Ivan who also heard the orders that Boris gave out and said ok.

Rudran sat watching as Boris Vanya's life ebbed away and then he stood up and took out his mobile phone and called his Mossad friend, Dr. Otto Hauptmann.

The moment the call was answered, Rudran jumped in " Dr. Otto, Have I got a beautiful surprise for you? But, I am going to need help and help which I need right now."

" Rudy, what is it? what have you done now?"

Rudran instantly knew something was off and his voice softened with concern as he enquired " Otto, why do you sound so low and deflated? I am here and I will do everything in my power to help you, my dear friend."

Dr. Otto laughed sadly " Rudy, even you cannot be everywhere for you are not God or an Angel even."

Clearing his throat softly " Did you not get any calls from London?"

Rudran felt a cold wave pass over him and in a thick voice " Why? what has happened in London?"

" London was under attack until just a short while ago. And the attack was aimed at the very hotel in which your wife and your family are staying and being watched over by my only son Benjamin and two other Mossad agents."

Rudran in full panic mode " Are they okay, Dr. Otto?"

" Thankfully yes, but my son and the others have been shot and injured badly. They were all involved in a deadly gunfight in the corridors leading up to your wife's suite. "

Rudran felt a rage fill in his mind and he growled " let me call you back Dr.Otto"

" Rudran, don't worry about your wife and your people for they are safe. I am not sure what to make of all that my son said before he passed out and only two words make sense although I have no clue as to what he was alluding."

Rudran waited for the doctor to say the two words, hoping they might shed light or give some sort of hint as to who the people were who had dared to launch an attack on his wife and his people.

" Green eyes. Yes, those were the exact words that my son said and kept saying before he passed out and was rushed to the nearest hospital. I have contacted the embassy and the Mossad station chief and have told them about the situation involving my son and our men and they are going to take care of it with the help of the Govt."

Rudran breathed a huge sigh of relief and then smiled for he knew what Green eyes meant and he whispered on the phone " Dr. Otto, I am going to send you an address and I want you and the best men you can arrange at such short noticed and get here as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, I am going to call my wife and check on her and see how she is holding up there in London."

Dr.Otto Hauptmann in a very stern voice " Mr. Rudran, the Israeli Government, the Mossad and me and my men do not work for you and cannot come running at your beck and call. I think I have indulged your whims far too often and that ends right at this moment as I need to get ready to fly to London to be with my son as he goes into surgery."

" Maurycy Gottlieb" Rudran whispered the name over the phone and Dr. Otto froze on hearing it and replied, " that name sounds familiar, very familiar."

Then his voice rose many decibels " he is the famous Polish-Jewish painter who painted " Jews Praying in Synagogue on Yom Kippur" in the year 1877 which is supposed to be worth Millions. But, what about him Rudy and why do you bring his name up?"

" Well, because unlike what most of the world thinks, he did finish many works and I am standing before one which I think is a true masterpiece and which can even rival the renaissance masters creations."

Rudran whispered " Exodus" and Dr. Otto gasped in shock " Exodus. But, that was just a rumor although many of us believe that it was stolen or lost during one of the world wars. If found today, it will be worth 200 or maybe even 300 million dollars."

" And I am at this very moment standing before that painting and also many other paintings whose number might just run into hundreds and if I am correct their rough estimate would be around 50 Billion dollars or more. Although, I have to add that the man who owned it is not alive anymore and told me just before dying that it could be worth more and also gave me the names, numbers and the address of other places in the world where more such stuff is being stored by the Mafia."

Dr. Otto Hauptmann gasped like a fish on land and only managed a squeak " My son is going in for surgery but he can hold on and manage for a few more hours, I think. Now, please tell me what you have gotten yourself into and where I am supposed to come and meet you."

Then he added " Rudran, why can't you just live an ordinary man's life. A boring and mundane life and why does every day of your existence have to be filled with so much action and thrills."

Rudran laughed " Doc, I swear that I too want and crave the same quiet and peaceful life that you just spoke off but it seems just impossible and things just happen around me and I react to them."

Dr. Otto Hauptmann cursed in Hebrew language and Rudran replied " ben-zonna(Son of a bitch) Is that all you have in your vocabulary, my good doctor?"

Dr.Otto erupted and let loose a stream of filthy words and Rudran held the phone far away from his ear and looked down at the dead Boris Vanya and said " Do you believe the filth that old man is spewing at me" and then slowly placed the phone to the still warm ears of the dead mafia man and whispered " Some curses to help you along on your way to hell I am sure of."

Then he spoke into the phone " Doc, I am texting the address and remember to be on guard for there might be some lingering threats around the place and so step carefully.Bye."

I walked on the soft, giving sands
Leaving my prints on its face
made of all things dead
and all things that were undead
shells, crabs and fishes mixed as beach sand
I walked using force on the damp and dry powdery sand

Time came as tide in a form of waves,
and I turned and looked as a small wave
just a wispy wave of sea, salt and air
came rolling up the crest
and washed clean my prints on the sand
and my little time on earth

I stood for I knew like that wave
brushing the ground clean and getting its palette ready
life too will be brushed away, making time for new

I dropped to my knees and looked at the rising sun
and I prayed for my loved ones
far away though they maybe be away from me
and I prayed that their life and time
be gentle and filled with peace

for what do we do other than pray
but rise like the sun and meet another day
head on in raging but gentle battle

I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion. Alexander the Great

The death of their leader Selvi Jayalalitha who was also the then Chief Minister was not only a body blow to the AIADMK party members but had more or less sounded the death knell to their immediate future. It left a vacuum that could not be immediately filled and thus led to fights, splits and open war declared on each other.

The Party had faced the same situation when their late chief minister MGR too had died thus leaving behind a vacuum and which led to the party breaking into two and taking sides of their leader's wife and their leader's on-screen heroine.

But then, the film star Jayalalitha showed to the world that she was not just a sheep but a lion in sheep's clothing and in the end triumphed and rallied the whole party and took them to victory in the 1991 polls and entered the fort as a great leader and virtually unopposed queen and king in one form.

Here-in lies the dilemma for like MGR before her, Amma was not only their leader but their only leader and in her light, the light of the others of her party faded away and was not seen.

DMK although similar at least had the luck and were blessed with many leaders and more importantly, their leader was blessed with a son, Stalin who was groomed to take over as he has done now and is a sure shot to finally become the next chief minister.

MGR and Jayalalitha both were without their own blood heirs and left behind an empty throne and the current vacuum in their party for try as hard as they can, both EPS and OPS are not being accepted by the people of Tamil Nadu.

I tell you, the Dravidian politics from the late 40's to now is a truly a great story and maybe, just maybe I should attempt to tell it in my own way. Maybe, I will sometime in the future.

The army vehicle stopped at the Tamil Nadu state guest house and Corporal Rajeev quickly jumped out and opened the door for Kavita and then shook hands with Raman and after wishing them well, left.

Raman could see that Kavita was really tired and he knew that she had not eaten anything from last night and laid a gentle hand on her shoulder and she turned to him with a smile.

" Kavita, you are a very brave and strong soul but even you need rest. Please, go to your room and rest until evening and later we will meet up and work out in detail as to how to proceed with our plans."

" Raman, if you don't mind, can we eat together?" to which Raman smiled and answered " Some other time Kavita but not today for we are now in the open and every eye is trained on us both, more importantly on you and every action and word of yours will be weighed and scrutinized and so, the last thing you need now is people spreading unwanted and distasteful rumors about you fraternizing with a man."

He stepped back and looked at her " I am here and I will always be there for you and I swear to you. But, now as your advocate, I advise you to stand alone and limit our public interactions to the barest minimum."

Kavita looked at him and thought to herself " If only you kissed me, Raman, just once. If only you buried your mouth around mine, I would gladly give up my life and die and go and join my brother."

Raman as if sensing what she might be thinking spoke to her tenderly " Kavita, life is not always about just us but all those who depend on us and look to us for support, motivation and who expect us to guide them through tough situations that life throws at them. You, my dear woman, are a beacon of hope, a lighthouse just like Vijay and it is time to step up and take charge like you did last night in Krishnagiri and like the time when you slapped that foul-mouthed female inspector during Suja's funeral."

He moved closer and whispered, " I will be there, just one step behind you while you lead and will hold you if you fall, fail or should stumble and will protect you."

Kavita looked at him and wiping her tears told him " Raman, I am just the house for you are the light inside it and the light that has been guiding us all these years. Promise, that you will never leave me and my family."

Raman smiled " Promise and I always keep my promises."

Both of them turned as one and seeing the throng of their party members that consisted of Mla's, Mp's from the lok sabha and the rajya sabha coming towards them realised what needed to be done and Kavita folded her hands and with a smile greeted her fellow members with a brave and sad smile.

Then as one, all of them raised their hands and began to shout slogans " Vijay vazhga, Kavitamma vazhga, annan durai pandi arumugam vazhga" and Raman stood far away thinking that the AIADMK party had maybe found its future leader and that the state of Tamil Nadu had found its chief minister.

Now, all that was left was to remove the obstacles in her path and clear it once and for all.

Without him knowing it, a freelance photographer clicked a photo of Raman with his hands folded and a sad smile on his lips and standing about twenty feet behind Kavita who had her back turned to him and both her hands folded as she greeted her party people in New Delhi.

He looked at the several photos and knew that he had struck on something special and knew that the article he would be posting the next day would bring many likes and comments and yes, ad revenue.

Minister Vaidyanathan stood hidden behind the pillar and stared venemously at Kavita and swore " Your brother is gone and soon you will be gone too and with you will be gone your saviour and guardian."

He called his friend and spoke hurriedly and Santoshi lal replied " The man who killed vijay has already reached chennai and is ready and waiting for his targets to arrive. It will all be over in a few days and nobody will suspect you or any foul play. Rejoice my friend for you will be soon rid of your enemies. One more thing brother, keep changing your sim card and always be alert for that bas***d V.K. Singh is the one who is handling this case and he is very smart and relentless and always gets results. I have managed to evade him only barely and that is why I am going to disappear from delhi for a few weeks and until this heat dies down.Bye brother."

Vaidyanathan smiled like a snake and looked into the distance at Raman and was shocked and unnerved to see his staring directly at him and reading his mind and hurriedly turned and walked away.

Raman knew he had to move and take control for he knew that the minister was not going to lie still and that he was coiled and ready for another strike.

Raman made the call and spoke just a few sentences and ended the call and then slowly looked up at the late afternoon sky and said a prayer " Vijay, if you can hear me then be with me for I need all the strength to fight this battle."

Redemption 291

"To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow, this is a human offering that can border on miraculous. Elizabeth Gilbert

Rudran knew that Renuka and Nikhil were all right for DR.Otto would have informed him if otherwise and then there were the forces that he had left behind to protect his wife and child and he knew that only a small army could have over-powered Queen Malar and her two children and that too only with dire consequences and with tremendous loss to their forces.

And then there was Nikhil himself for Rudran knew that even in the womb, his son had been exhibiting weird and wonderful powers that were even beyond his own skills and strengths and he would have been the last wall, the final line which could not have been easily crossed.

He looked at his phone and saw no missed calls from London and smiled proudly as he realized how brave Renuka was for even though she had been probably subjected to tremendous stress and trauma during the attack, she had not reached out for him or warned him about the attack on them at the hotel.

Renuka picked up on the very first ring and Rudran spoke " Renu, I only now got the news about the attack on your hotel. Are you all okay? "

Renu replied, " Forget that for a sec baby and tell me how you are doing and when you are coming back?"

Rudran's voice went rough with emotion as his soul filled with pride and admiration for his wife " Renu, I am okay and am nearly done. Just the matter of shipments and then it is back to you, sweetie. But, baby, what happened in London?"

Renuka sighed " I am sorry that you were not here Rudy?" and Rudran immediately " Me too Renu but you knew that I had to be here in New York to retrieve these paintings for they belong to us rightfully."

" Stupid, Stupid man, when I said that I was sorry that you were not here, I did not mean it in a bad way but in a good way my beautiful man for you missed meeting your blood and the legend."

Rudran went still and then slowly spoke " You mean Dhana, Dhanashekara Pandyan. But, he is in Madurai right now or is he?"

Renuka laughed loudly " Rudy baby, I am putting the phone on Loudspeaker mode, so that Queen Malar, Arul and Jyothi can join us in this conversation."

" Okay people, what is going on there in London?"

It was not deliberate and yet they all said the name in unison " Azhagan was here and it was he who protected us."

Rudran went blank for a second and his lips moved by themselves " Azhagan, Azhagan, but that is nearly impossible for he must be nearly 900 years old or god knows more."

Queen Malar spoke softly and with total devotion " My king, my lord that is why we and my clan have been worshipping and praying to your people for we have known forever that you and your kind came here from the skies and the depths of the universe and have returned again and again to protect and defend this planet."

Arul whispered, " My lord Rudran if your people can travel through Billions or maybe even Trillions of light years in their spaceships, life, I mean a long life must be a simple thing for them to do or achieve."

Rudran who was all lost and confused by this shocking news of his ancestor's arrival saw some movements on the screen of the dead Boris Vanya's mobile and saw that it was receiving camera feed from outside.

He saw the remaining Russian mafia men outside the building begin to arm themselves and he knew that they were going to try and attempt and enter the building to see what was going on inside and then the large mobile phone of their now dead leader's began to ring and Rudran slid the green arrow and tried his best imitation of Boris's voice and answered " Da ( Yes)" and Little Ivan spoke " Boss, are you ok? the trucks are going to be here any moment and me and the men want to know when you are coming out."

Rudran spoke in the same whispery and slightly high voice of the dead Boris " day mne desyat' minut ( give me ten minutes) and ended the call and returned to his call to London " Sorry Renu, just a few details and a few more mobsters to take care off. Listen, if everything goes according to plan, then I should be there by tomorrow afternoon or at the most later in the evening. Promise and please tell Nikhil to hold on for his dad. Bye baby."

Nikhil who had been fast asleep inside his mother's womb, fast asleep even through all the chaos and gunfire now woke up and kicked around happily for he had heard his father's voice and promise and Renu gently patted her womb " My little prince, you are finally awake sir. "

Good morning. I wish you a beautiful day. Stone, photo, sketch, painting and even dust it may be and yet if it is an image of God and it it is a creation from the outpouring of love and devotion to the supreme power, then it is all good and far, far better than any Human who passes off himself as Guru or far worse, God himself.

Empty vessels make more noise and gurus and the so-called Godmen are just that, noise and all empty. God is just like our mother and father and even better, a beautiful and constant companion and true friend and why do you need a broker, pimp to talk to your parents or friends.

So talk, so sing, whisper in your soul and the universe will listen for deep inside in the tiniest of the tiniest atom are even tinier neutrons, protons, and electrons and even they are dancing around a center called nucleus.

Wonder what tune or song they are dancing to. Then wonder no more for they are dancing to the tune of love and its blessed forms.

Redemption 292

"Whatever you are, male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy--all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside. Cassandra Clare

Rudran basked in his love for his wife Renuka and his soon to be born son, Nikhil and told all the master creations by great creators " My life has been a roller-coaster ride from the time I was born and yet Bhairav's presence made it worth living. When he left, I thought there was nothing to live for anymore and kept just existing like a zombie, until now. Renuka came and breathed life into me and Nikhil. I want to live for them, for my brother and I want to live for this world and for all that is graced and blessed by light and love."

His words echoed all around the gallery and Rudran wondered if his eyes were cheating him for suddenly all the paintings and the people in them seemed more cheerful and happier than before.

Rudran smiled " soon, I will send you back to where you all rightfully belong and soon you will all be back with the ones who really love you and cherish you."

Boris Vanya's mobile phone flickered on and a call came in and Rudran knew instantly it was a call from Moscow and he kept quiet although he knew he was running out of time and that soon more people would land up and then things would be beyond control.

He waited for the call to end and then tapping an app brought on the CCTV footage from outside the gallery and saw one small made man talking animatedly into the phone and then looked at the building which housed all the investments of the top order of the Russian mafia.

He quickly dialed dr. Otto's number and spoke " Doc, the scene is soon going to fill up with more unfriendlies and then it will be too late to do what we plan to do. So, please get here as quickly as possible."

dr.Otto Hauptmann, Rudran's Mossad friend nearly lost his cool and yelled " Rudy, the city is crawling with NYPD men and FBI agents and many SWAT choppers are circling the city. I don't what you have been up to and what mess you are drawing us all into and I am not sure why I agreed to help you in the first place. But, we are nearing the address and should be there in another ten or twenty minutes."

" The Exodus painting and other art by dozens of other Jewish artists from all over the world that was presumed either lost or destroyed. That is the only reason you agreed and that is why you are coming to my aid. Okay, sir. And maybe a little, a little something you feel for me as a friend and whose instincts and judgment you respect and know will never go wrong."

dr.Otto cursed filthily in Hebrew language and Rudran smilingly ended the call and then turned to view the CCTV footage from outside the building for he knew that something was being planned and the person who had called the dead Boris Vanya from Moscow had called that rather short but wicked looking criminal outside who was now rallying all the men and talking to them animatedly.

Rudran closed his eyes and calculated and knew that DR.Otto was right and that it indeed be too late for them to move all these art stuff from the building and carry it away to safety.

" We need more men, more reinforcements to get this done and that means calling home and calling the right man who can make things happen" thought Rudran and quickly made a call and looked at his watch which displayed 11.00 pm which meant it was nearly 9.30 AM in New Delhi.

His call was answered on the second ring by Prime Minister Jagannath Mishra who greeted him " Rudy beta, How is London treating you, young man? Beta, it must be about 4.00 am there. So why are you calling me at this hour? enjoy your honeymoon and come back fully rested and ready for you truly deserve a long break from work."

" Sir, I am doing okay fine and please forgive and accept my apologies for I am right now not in London with my family but in New York sir and it is 11.00 pm in the night here."

Prime Minister Mishra leaned back to comfort his constantly nagging and aching lower back and spoke " New York and not London. This means that you are on some personal work then Beta. Anyway, tell me what is happening in America?"

Rudran took a deep breath and asked " Sir, I guess you know what a WhatsApp video call means, right sir?" to which Prime Minister Mishra laughed loudly and answered" My dear Rudran, I have learnt a few tricks from my granddaughter and yes, I know what a video call is. But, why that doubt now beta?"

" Sir, I am going to end the call now and call you back through the WhatsApp video and I will do that in exactly five minutes sir and I need you to do something for me before that."

Prime Minister Jagannath Mishra stared at his mobile phone after the just ended call and then pressed the intercom button and his personal secretary ran in and listened carefully as orders were given out.

In New York, Rudran loaded his handgun and turning the safety off, bent down and grabbed the dead Boris and dragged him to the entrance door and whispered to himself " Okay, time to reduce the odds and also time to find you what the enemies are planning."

He positioned the dead body of Boris Vanya in front of him and playfully patting him said: " Cheer up Boris, at least you are going to be of some use even in death."

He took one good look at the phone of Boris Vanya and making sure of the positions of all the criminals who were gathered outside separated from him by the door and pocketing the phone, pressed the exit button and watched as the door opened silently and the seven men who were obviously now taking orders from the short man who stood in front of them as their leader all turned in unison and stared into the darkness and saw the huge form of Boris standing there and then Rudran's silenced handgun spat and spoke bullets and it spoke expertly and the first bullet was for the short man who collapsed holding his tummy. It was not meant to kill immediately but to leave the man alive and incapacitated and ready to answer some questions.

The next bullets were fired and at that short distance they did deadly damage and in the hands of a master marksman and killer, they all found their final resting place and in the heads of the six Russian men who were all too frozen and shaken up on seeing their boss Boris shooting at them and it was all too late before they realized that another man stood behind their dead boss and it was his hand which was firing all those fatal bullets.

Rudran dropped the dead Boris to the ground and walked towards the small Russian and pointing his handgun asked in a menacing voice " I am going to ask you just a few questions and you will answer them honestly or else will die but enjoying a lot of pain before that and that is something I promise you."

He looked at the small Russian's face " just in case you don't believe me, here is something for you to ponder about before you answer" and shot two times and into the kneecaps of the criminal who wailed in pain and mumbled " what do you want to know ? "

The boy who went into the dark and came back with light.

Naseeruddin Moron Shah calls Virat Kohli world's worst behaved player

Moron Shah has called Virat Kohli world's worst behaved player', starting a debate on social media. The veteran actor also took a jibe, adding he had no intention of leaving the country.

And you are the world's most overrated actor and a frustrated one at that and whose time is over and has been over for a long time now. So, you try to speak about this proud nation's cricket team captain who with the other members are currently touring one of the toughest cricketing nations and trying to create history and you say this about him.

Yes, you should leave the country not because you are a Muslim but because you are of no use to anybody leave alone your own fraternity.

Enjoy the light that reflects of Virat Kohli and our cricket team and, realize fully that doers do and talkers talk.

Leave alone putting down Virat, you then take a nasty and religious dig at him and at all Indians.

Anyway, most of us are aware that you are still alive somewhere through this nasty comment of yours.

Shame on you for calling yourself an Indian.

Good morning. I wish you a beautiful day.

Spoken languages and its proficiency aside, the most beautiful language and that which ebbs and springs is the language of love and which is spoken from the soul and in silence.

It is a language that can only be expressed through the eyes which are the true windows to the soul and the heart. The wishes and greetings that are given through the lips are just that, sound and no meaning.

But, a kind and a loving look of acceptance and wishes are the best gifts and greetings that one can bestow on another life and soul. I learnt Telugu and Kannada from my family. English, Tamil, and passable Hindi through education.

I learnt the language of love through my friends and I know it truly is the language of God.

Songs of faith and devotion in Kashi

It was the first time that I was experiencing temperatures below 10 degrees and the lowest that I had ever felt on my skin was a bone-chilling 12 degrees in Munnar when I had shot for " Club Mahindra resorts" and way back in 1998 November.

But, this felt far colder and yet only a white kurta and pajama covered me as I stepped out and went down the steps that led to the sacred river of Ganga and the time was 5.30 AM.

It was dark and the air was thick with fog and the slow-moving waters of the Ganges shimmered and slithered by like a beautiful snake and I did wonder if the serpent had indeed uncoiled itself from the man on the silver mountain and had come down to take a dip in the waters of the sacred Ganges.

But, there was light although not from the nuclear reactions that happen inside our Sun but from the many pyres that were burning on the banks of the Ganga and in the dancing lights, the men who stood around the fires of the pyres looked like ghosts and the sudden crackle of wood and flesh and bone threw up-sparkles and embers that raced, floated away up into the heavens and a voice whispered " Sing child, sing your heart out" and I burst out singing my favorite song

" Sivaney endra udan manathil
mogam undagiduthe
innamum kaaneno
enbathe aasaiyum migunthiduthe"

In the darkness and in the lights of burning flesh of what was once man and was once a tree, my eyes strained into the distance and caught sight of the Kashi Vishwanath temple in the distance and my journey began and the voice again whispered " From one pyre to another pyre of fire" which evoked a smile in me and I heeded the call and headed in the direction of " Kashi Vishwanath" and once there, I did sing again and the song was
" Vishwanathan velai vendum" from the film Kadhalikka neramillai.

The sacred city of Varanasi as it is known officially today has other names which are more familiar to us and they are names that have existed from ancient times. Long before I had first heard of Kanchi Pattu, I was already familiar with terms such as "Banaras pattu and Banaras Zari" for they were whispered as sacred mantras by the oldies in my family. I confess that for a very long time, I thought Zari was some sort of silk of exotic nature and knew not the difference.

Over the past few years, a familiar but rude voice keeps constantly invading my privacy and the space of my tranquility by yelling loudly " Pattu, Pazhaya pattu, Pazhaya zari, nalla vilaiku vaanga padum. kai mela kaasa udane vaangikkunga " and I would curse and mutter " Kai mele illame S...u melaya kudupe. Arivukettavane" and then he would vanish and only to return late in the evening yelling at the top of his voice " Pazhaya pattu pudava, pazhaya pattu pavadai, veshti, thundu nalla vilaiku vaangapadum" and I would again curse and mumble " Pazhaya jatti, pazhaya kovanam, pazhaya bra, vennumada mundam" and lull myself to a false sense of silence.

The enterprising and relentless than engaged the services of technology and rigged a battery operated speaker and became twice as louder and twice as irritating and yes, needless to say, my blood pressure is higher than before.

Forget this man who comes back, again and again to haunt us like the " Robert Bruce" of our ancient history syllabus, for he also has other brothers in arms and they number three or more although they pitch a different tune but just as loudly.

" Budi, paper, paal cover, Pazhaya samaan" and I freeze wondering if I too figure in his rather crude technical term for discarded and unused household items. I also wonder how my neighbors react to these wails for most of them are between the ages of 65 and 90 and Besant Nagar is more or less like a retirement locality.
Shit, blistering barnacles for I too reside in Besant Nagar.

Sadly and it is the truth that once we age and retire we are in all honesty " Pazhaya samaan."

God, I started with the sacred city of Varanasi and ended up with Discarded items. Wait, that is rather apt and poetic for isn't Kashi the destination craved by all souls, living, dead, undead and all the Pazhaya Samaans.

1995 January, Someshwar temple just outside Mangalore and the time was between 8.00 AM and 9.00 AM and after fixing the flat on the rear tyre of our RX100 bike, me and Seeni took off to Someshwar and all charged up to see the giant statue of Gommateshwara, Shravanbelagola not for one second realizing the rather silly mistake of confusing Lord Shiva with a famous Jain monk.

Well, that was soon rectified and taking it in our stride, we paid our respects to Lord Someshwar and went on our way towards Panjim, Goa and I drove on not knowing that the lord of the Someshwar temple had entered and taken hold of my soul and purpose.

My tryst with the Three-eyed god in 1995 soon filled me with this desire, an ache to visit Kashi and sit on the Ganges and feel his breath on my soul as I dangled my feet in the cold river water that flows down from the Himalayas.

December 2012, I got a call from my friend who is the production executive for Ramya Krishnan's company and he asked me if I was willing to work in a new tv serial project. Just for information sake, it was nearly a year since the end of Maharani, a tv serial that successfully aired on Vijay tv and which I had told myself that I was getting too old to play romantic and silly lead roles and wanted something more mature and performance oriented roles and so I decided to try my hand at films which are an altogether a different story by itself.

But, coming back to the call and an offer of a nice role in a new serial and that too at prime time on sun tv, I kind of balked at the offer and Venket, the executive said " Sir, you will not be pairing with madam and you will be only playing her brother and that too younger brother."

That reminder was due to my rejection of an offer to pair with Ramya ma'am in the then on-going serial " Thangam" in the year 2010 to which I had said no citing that we both would be mismatched as a pair and I state it here that it was a
much- regretted decision.

Just as my lips mouthed " sorry, no, thank you" Venket said, " sir, the first schedule is going to be in Kashi and we are leaving next week."

My soul leapt out of its mortal anchor of a body and drifted off in a northerly direction leaving behind my lips in Chennai to mumble " yes, yes I will only be too happy to work with you all."

About the serial which was colossal mismanagement of resources, talent and time flopped badly and ended in a few months.

But, Kashi Vishwanath has stayed put in my soul and bones and yes, the pyres and fires are ever present but don't bother me much as they did once.

To this day, I personally think that the serial happened for my sake and for me and Kashi Vishwanath to meet up and exchange notes on how and what's of my life and how badly he had screwed up on certain issues.

Redemption 293

If there is a magic in story writing, and I am convinced that there is, no one has ever been able to reduce it to a recipe that can be passed from one person to another. The formula seems to lie solely in the aching urge of the writer to convey something he feels important to the reader. If the writer has that urge, he may sometimes but by no means always find the way to do it. John Steinbeck

Yes, I echo the above quote's meaning for I write to escape the dredge of my soul and in the process put out my hand and ask other souls if they too want to escape, at least for a little time to a magic world and one that is far away from this hell called reality. We are attached to this present reality purely out of Ego and nothing more.

Little Ivan, the second-in-command of the New York Division of the Russian Mafia lay on the ground knowing very well that he was going to die very soon and it was only a choice between bleeding to a painful death or dying the next moment with a bullet from the mysterious stranger who stood above him.

He looked into the eyes of the man who had killed Boris Vanya and who had then effortlessly used him as a shield and then shot and killed all the other around him, and at the same time putting a fatal bullet in his gut and asked with pain " Why? What gives you the right to kill us like animals? I have never seen you before and so I fail to understand what is driving you to do all this?"

Rudran smiled and raised his handgun and aimed it at the man's balls and said " do you want to go to hell without balls and as a eunuch? stop wasting my time with silly questions and delaying tactics and answer my question. What did you talk with the man who just called you and who tried calling Boris Vanyas mobile before calling you?"

Little Ivan grimaced with pain and thought to himself " This feels like hell itself and there is still another hell to go to after death and that is supposed to be eternal and infinite."

Rudran's mobile phone rang and he took the WhatsApp video call without hesitating for it was from the Prime Minister himself and answered it and saw on the screen, the prime minister, General. Veer Singh, and Major. Param watching him and he said hello and then slowly turned the phone down towards the Russian who lay on the ground and it was an action that instantly evoked a response from his immediate boss, General. Veer Singh, who nearly screamed his head off " Rudy, who is that you have under your gun and are those other dead bodies I see around you? What is going on?"

Rudran spoke and all three heard his voice clearly in Delhi " Gentlemen, you will understand everything once I enter the building. But, please bear me with me for a few moments while I finish with this Russian gentleman who was just about to share some vital information with me."

The three men in New Delhi sat still and watched and heard the growl of their man who they all considered a Living legend and a true hero ask the injured Russian " What were the instructions given to you on the phone from Moscow? "

Little Ivan smiled and before the smile could even flicker to life, Rudran's gun flickered and a bullet raced out and smashed into the man's testicles and before a yell of pain could erupt from his lips, Rudran placed his foot on his throat and growled again " The next bullet will be in one of your shoulders and then the next and then in your thighs and I am sure that you will tell me what you were instructed to do on the phone."

Little Ivan cursed his destiny for having brought him from Europe to New York to replace Boris Vanya and with the pain now too much to bear slowly began to speak " I was ordered to delay whoever or whatever the nature of the problem that was supposed to be here and none of us were aware that it was only one man, only you that was the problem?

" Delay, how? you mean more men are coming here to help you right?"

Little Ivan, the Russian mafia man did not even have to nod for Rudran had understood what was too painful for him to convey and then his eyes flickered green and were seen by the man although only his voice could be heard by all three who were on the video call from New Delhi.

" I will answer your question now. You asked me why I have attacked all of you and slaughtered you like animals and the reason is not me but your own actions. I am just a reaction to all the criminal and evil actions of yours starting from child prostitution to Drugs. I can even understand scams and such online stuff but I cannot understand forcing children into prostitution and I will not stand by and watch that happen.

You asked me who I am and why I am doing this and the reason is I stand for all that is good and honest, while you and your people stand for all that is bad and evil in life."

Rudran's handgun barked and the bullet finally gave peace to little Ivan by killing him and putting him out of his misery but would transport him to hell which was a foregone conclusion.

Rudran raised the phone and looked at all three of them and flashed a brilliant smile and addressed them " I am sorry for the delay but you will understand everything once I take you inside that building and once you see all that I have seen."

Rudran moved to the entrance and quickly punched in the numbers into the keypad and the door opened silently and he spoke again " Welcome gentlemen and please hold on to your seats for what you are about to see is going to blow you all away."
