Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of Major Mohit Sharma, director Aditya Dhar has clarified. The announcement comes amid speculation that Ranveer’s character would depict the late army officer, who had gone undercover as Iftikhar Bhatt to infiltrate Hizbul Mujahideen in the early 2000s. Dhar addressed the rumours directly after Mohit Sharma’s brother, Madhur Sharma, tagged him on social media seeking confirmation.
“Hi, sir – our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification,” Dhar wrote in response. He added, “I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.”
Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh alongside Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. The film has generated excitement ever since its announcement, especially as the major characters are inspired by real-life personalities. The clarification from Dhar comes as a response to ongoing speculation about the film’s inspiration.
The project is also in the news due to its reported runtime. Sources indicate that Dhurandhar Part 1 could run for around three hours and thirty-two minutes. The final runtime has not been officially confirmed, as the film is currently awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.
A source familiar with the project told Bollywood Hungama, “Dhurandhar tells a vast story, and hence the lengthy runtime. Director Aditya Dhar is an expert storyteller. Look at Uri: The Surgical Strike or his productions like Article 370, Dhoom Dhaam, and Baramulla. He ensures that there is a lot happening in his films and that the narrative never feels stretched. Dhurandhar’s storytelling will be on the same lines. The audience will be gripped from start to finish.”
While fans continue to speculate about the story and characters, Dhar’s statement makes it clear that Major Mohit Sharma’s life has not been adapted for the film. He also reaffirmed his intention to consult the family fully if a biopic on the late officer is made in the future, showing sensitivity towards the legacy and sacrifices of the army officer.
The film is shaping up to be one of the year’s most awaited releases, with audiences eager to see the ensemble cast and the expansive story unfold on screen.
