THE PROPHECY - PART 11

Roli walks away with a strong sense of purpose, as if she has important business to take care of.

Siddhant is shell-shocked.

SIDDHANT: Poonam?

But she pays no heed to him. She continues to head straight to the lion's den!

Siddhant panics as he notices the traffic at the junction slowly clear up. Those guys are still stuck back there. But it won't be long before they catch up again. And if they do... I must stop her!

SIDDHANT: Poonam? (bolts after her) Hey! Hey Poonam! Stop!

He catches up with her and blocks her path, but she tries to shoulder past him.

SIDDHANT: (holds her back) What?!!? What are you doing?

ROLI: (tries to shake him off) Let go off me!

SIDDHANT: Poonam!

She shoulders past him again. He grabs her by the wrist and tugs her back.

ROLI: I said let go!

SIDDHANT: What's the matter with you? Just calm down!

ROLI: (wildly) I need to go back!

SIDDHANT: You can't. Those guys are back there. Understand? They'll kill you!

ROLI: So let them! Why do you care?

SIDDHANT: (frustrated) This is not the time for cross questioning! Just try to be rational! Please!

ROLI: I can't be rational! And I don't want to be! Do you know why? (trembles with a choked voice) Because my Papa's still back there! Understand? I must retrieve his body! I have to do his last rites! I'm his daughter!

The hard truth of her own statement breaks her. She can no longer contain the bag of mixed emotions exploding in her.

Siddhant watches helplessly as she crumbles down on the footpath and sob her heart out.

His eyes dart frantically to the traffic ahead of them. It clears the junction box and inches towards them.

SIDDHANT: (kneels before her) Listen. We have to move now. Please try to understand.

But Roli doesn't even respond. She buries her face into her knees and heaves in loud sobs.

SIDDHANT: Poonam, please yaar!

The vehicles close in from the other lane. Siddhant is frantic.

ROLI: (cries) I can't leave him behind. He's my father.

SIDDHANT: (frustrated) Your father put himself in the line of target to protect you! He gave his life for yours! And is this how you want to honour him? By getting yourself killed?

That statement shocks Roli. Her sobs come to a screeching halt, she stares at Siddhant with bloodshot eyes.

SIDDHANT: You're actually trying to insult his memory! Respect his sacrifice!

Roli is dumbfounded.

SIDDHANT: Don't look at me like that! That's exactly what you're doing now.

Roli just watches him as he looks towards the oncoming traffic with panic in his eyes.

SIDDHANT: (holds out his hand) Do you trust me?

Roli is hesitant. She's not sure yet. She doesn't even know him enough to trust him and yet something deep down coaxes her to believe in him blindly.

SIDDHANT: (hand still held out) Do you trust me?

Without a word, Roli entrusts herself to him by placing her tender little hand in his broad, protective one.

SIDDHANT: (pulls her up) Come on! Hurry!

He helps her into the front seat, gets behind the wheel and screeches away.

IN THE CAR, MUCH LATER

The digital clock on the panel displays 11:30 PM as Siddhant pulls into the parking lot of a residential medium rise building. He eyes the surrounding cautiously before opening the door.

SIDDHANT: (in a low voice) Come on.

Roli just stares at him doubtfully. Where is he taking me? Siddhant reads her mind.

SIDDHANT: I live here. We'll be safe here for the night. Hopefully. Come on. Don't worry.

His assuring tone and words compel her to step out. She slowly follows him into the elevator.

IN THE ELEVATOR

Roli glances around cautiously. She isn't even sure what's happening or what she's doing. Why is it that I trust this man? I don't even know him. And yet, I'm forced to obey him as if by some magic.

Moments later, they are at the door of Siddhant's apartment on the sixth floor.

He opens the door, walks in and holds it open for her.

Roli is hesitant.

SIDDHANT: Come on in.

She slowly walks in as her eyes take in the details of the apartment. It's a large, cozy and inviting apartment with a brilliant white, grey and beige theme.

Siddhant leads her to the bedroom. A medium spaced area with a comfy double bed towards the corner. The room also has a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. She stands around cautiously as he turns on the air conditioner and shuts the curtains.

SIDDHANT: (smiles as he finds her still standing) Hey, just relax. There's plenty of space to sit around. There's no one else here. Just us. You're free to do your own thing. (winks) I'll be right back.

He hurries off to the kitchen to prepare some coffee for the both of them.

Meanwhile, Roli slowly settles down in her new surroundings. The bed is really soft and cool that she is tempted to sleep like a log. Yet, her mind drifts off to the unbelievable horror that happened a while back. It all seems like a nightmare. She's not even sure if it's real. Deep down, she wishes that it was all a bad dream.

But her father's bullet riddled dead body and his blank, expressionless eyes haunts her with the fact that it is true. She remembers his last few moments and Siddhant's words: "He put himself in the line of target to protect you. He gave his life for yours."

IN THE KITCHEN

Siddhant prepares his special creamy coffee and takes a sip. Mmm, great as usual. I'm sure she'll love it.

He picks up the loaded coffee mugs, heads to the bedroom and almost walks through the door but stops in his tracks as he sees her huddled on the bed and crying quietly with her knees drawn to her chest.
