Kumud & Saras: Pride Vs Ego

Hi everyone,

I am not a regular member of the SC forum although I have been following this show since its inception. Some people might know me from DMG/KYPH and now QH forum.

I am not sure if I will be able to post regularly, but I couldn't help making a post on the two protagonists of this show. I have read a lot of posts regarding their characterization- some positive and some negative. There has been a lot of chitter-chatter regarding Kumud's arrogance and ego. Let me make it clear, that I watch very few serials, and what draws me to some of these shows is characterization and acting. Yes, I am a JW fan and also like GR but I am unbiased and base my posts on their characters rather than actors (that's why I have been criticizing Asad on QH forum even though I am a big KSG fan.)

First of all, there is a big difference between the words 'ego' and 'pride.' A lot of people use them interchangeably but they have very different connotations.

Ego: Is based on selfishness, arrogance and usually has no basis. It's about 'I,me, mine' and not about genuine feelings. An egoistic person wants to win at all costs because they can't see their POV being questioned by anyone. They have a hard time apologizing for their mistakes and think they are always correct.

Pride: Pride tends to be less selfish and is typically based on the facts of a person's achievements and qualities. It's about self- respect. It's based on a genuine feeling of accomplishment. People who pride in themselves have no problem with another person's POV. They don't hesitate to apologize or admit to their own mistakes. These people are honest about their feelings and don't have an agenda to prove to anyone else. They just don't want to be taken for a ride. They don't want people to take them for granted.

Our protagonists are both people with immense pride in themselves. Saras, is proud to be his mother's son and anyone who threatens this bond or makes a mockery of his respect for his mother, will suffer the consequences. He doesn't have an ego. If he did, he would have never landed in Ratnagiri or tried to make peace with Kumud after she challenged him and called him names like 'darpok.' Yes, he is angry because he thought Kumud mocked him and forced him to swim in the pond where his mother had committed suicide. His tragic memories overpowered his attraction for Kumud and till he cools down, he is not going to forgive her.

Similarly, Kumud prides herself for the woman she is, her accomplishments, and her family- most of all her bapu. So, anyone who threatens to insult her womanhood or her family is going to get her wrath and stinging words. Yes, she played around with Saras's emotions but did she do that intentionally just to mock him? No! She was trying to get back to him for his initial rejection, especially after his family had sent the marriage proposal. Once she found out his tragic history, she was the first one to admit to her mistake. There was NO ego here- just genuine apology. She is not arrogant; just an honest person who doesn't hide her feelings.

Saras is the same way. He won't forgive her just for the sake of forgiving. The day he forgives her would be a genuine emotion from his side, and not a half-hearted one just for the sake of peace.

I am in love with both protagonists because they are pure souls, honest to themselves and proud of their own identity. Yes, they will clash, but not because of arrogance or ego, but because they have too much respect for themselves as individuals.

Reserved 😃 thank you Sangeeta for making a post here :))

EDIT: Who better to define emotions than you Sangeeta. The difference between pride and arrogance...I feel the latter is when someone looks down on others to boost their self-confidence while pride is limited to yourself, your achievements. Arrogance demeans the importance of others, pride is what comes from within for yourself. If that makes sense?!

I do feel Kumud's immense pride is taken as ego because she does give her desires and opinions that much importance. It's a thin line though. Her mum calls her arrogant so that's her viewpoint on Kumud. I'm still enjoying watching the layers in both Saras and Kumud unfold :))

A magnetic factor of the show are the characters. Both Saras and Kumud arent egoistic. They're just proud of who they are.

I couldnt articulate it as well as how you have. Beautiful post!
