Chapter 12:

Rachna buried herself into Kabir's arms. She stayed in his arms long after her tears had stopped flowing and her sobbing had subsided, and he didn't let go of her either. A peaceful silence settled into the room as neither of them spoke, for they both just wanted to relish the moment of being together, of being in each other's arms. They wanted to make up for lost time, or so it seemed, for neither Kabir nor Rachna had any intention to let go.

As much as she wanted to stay in his arms, Rachna broke away from his embrace, for she knew that she no longer had that right, as Kabir was no longer her husband. It was almost as though his mind echoed her thoughts because he didn't try to pull her back into his arms when she pulled herself away.

"You're right Kabir. When you really love someone, you can't hate them...even if they break your heart and your trust...just like you did with me."

While Kabir had been reading her diary, Rachna had stood by the window trying to figure out the truth behind the divorce papers. It was then that she had realized the actuality of what had happened. When she had signed the contract agreeing for the out-of-court settlement of her parents' accident case, she had not bothered to read the packet of legal documents, for she assumed that Sneha mausi had already verified everything. The divorce agreement must have been slipped into the pile of papers, by her lawyer undoubtedly, and Rachna had unknowingly signed them. This only had to mean one thing: that Kabir knew everything about his brother's involvement in her parents' accident and he himself had sent those divorce papers to her.

"Why are you here today Kabir? Why are you here now that everything is over? You got what you wanted. But you know you really didn't have to play hide and seek with those divorce papers Kabir. You could have openly asked me to sign them and I would have agreed for your happiness."

"I didn't send you any divorce papers Rachna. Is this what that woman told you? She told you that I sent those divorce papers and you believed her lies. That's why you agreed to sign them?"

"Stop it Kabir. Stop lying to me. I admit that I hid the truth from you earlier. But I have told you the entire truth today and yet you are still playing games with me. At least be honest now and stop toying with my emotions. You claim that you have missed me for the past 11 months. You claim that you wanted me to come back into your life. And I, being the emotional fool, fell for it and told you the entire truth today. But honestly, you don't deserve to know anything. I had been feeling guilty all this time thinking that I had hurt you so much. But the truth is that I didn't push myself away from you. In fact, you had already decided to end our relationship and divorce me before I even thought about leaving you."

Kabir was shocked by Rachna's accusation. "Rachna, what are you saying? I don't understand anything. How can you accuse me like this?"

"You knew everything about Karan's involvement in my parents' accident...you knew that he killed my parents. Yet you still wanted to save him, so you pushed for an out-of-court settlement. And I agreed for it on my family's insistence. So then why did you hide those divorce papers into the contract for the out-of-court settlement Kabir?"

Kabir was completely lost now. "Rachna, what are you even talking about? How could Karan have been involved in your parents' accident? He has been in London for the past 4 years. He was supposed to come visit us in Benaras when I had called you, but he cancelled his trip because something came up. And I myself had no idea about this divorce until I got the letter from court this morning saying that our divorce has been finalized. That's why I'm here to talk to you today. I seriously don't know what's been going on, but one thing is for certain...there's been a huge misunderstanding and that woman seems to be the root cause of everything. Before we try to figure that out though, can you please calm down and tell me everything from the beginning?"

Rachna was stunned. "You seriously don't know anything?"

Kabir shook his head. "I have no idea."

Rachna was horrified of herself. "You have no idea about any of all this? And I just kept accusing you of such terrible things? I'm seriously the worst person ever Kabir. I'm so sorry. I really don't deserve you. I couldn't even trust the person that I love the most."

Kabir put his arm around her shoulder. "Shhh. You're not a bad person. Don't ever say that you don't deserve me. But come on; tell me everything from the beginning. We are going to get to the bottom of this."

Rachna told him about everything that had happened and Kabir listened silently. When she finished talking, Kabir sighed loudly and made sure he understood the entire situation.

"So, the person they arrested in your parents' accident case was Karan? Karan Tripathi?"

"Yeah."

"And you didn't want to hurt me by telling me about all this so you went through it all alone? Even after I repeatedly asked you if you needed any help."

Rachna looked down, feeling ashamed, and nodded in affirmation.

"And then your family decided to agree to the out-of-court settlement. So you signed those papers against your will and came to Benaras with the intention of telling me the truth. But then you saw what I had written and you thought that I wouldn't be happy living with you so you decided to just walk away. Then today you saw the announcement about the divorce, and you thought that I had deliberately done all this?"

"I'm sorry Kabir. I don't know what I was thinking when I accused you of doing this. I guess I wasn't thinking at all. I was just so hurt when I saw the letter about the divorce that I couldn't think straight. My heart didn't accept that you could do something like this but my mind just believed the evidence."

"Rachna. I don't know if I should be hurt that you thought I could do something like this or if I should be glad that the misunderstanding between us is finally clear. I guess it doesn't really matter because the damage has already been done. Rachna, I just wish that you had been open with me about everything right from the beginning. You hid the truth from me because you didn't want to hurt me, but I got hurt anyway Rachna. You claim to love me and know me so well, but you didn't understand the simplest thing about me...that seeing you in pain hurts me more than anything else in this world."

Rachna hugged Kabir tightly. "I'm sorry Kabir. I'm sorry for everything. I am the biggest idiot ever. You always trusted me and I could never tell you the truth about anything. I don't deserve your love."

Kabir stroked Rachna's back, comforting her. "Don't say that Rachna. Everyone makes mistakes...you made some too. But I have always loved you and I always will."

She hugged him even harder and whispered into his ear. "I love you too. I love you so much."

Kabir's phone rang at that moment and he moved away from Rachna to answer the call.

"Hey Karan. Let's meet up soon. I want to introduce you to someone and there's a lot that we need to talk about..."
