Chapter 12

February 3, 2014. 6:00 pm. Rachna's Room.

Rachna is sitting on her bed working on a presentation on her laptop. She is getting more and more frustrated since she has been trying to finish this presentation all day but just can't seem to focus. 😔😡 In her frustration, Rachna slams her laptop shut, leans her head back against the headboard of her bed, and closes her eyes. The same scene of Raj confessing his love for her keeps playing back in her mind...over and over again.

Why? Why can't I just forget about it? Raj revealed his true feelings to me and I did the same so why do I feel so guilty about it? I have never seen Raj as anything more than a friend so why do I feel so bad about turning him down? I haven't been able to focus on anything all day...it's ridiculous!! What should I do? Hmmm... I should just call Raj and apologize to him again. Maybe that will help me feel better...

Rachna picks up her cell phone and dials Raj's number. The line rings for a few seconds but then goes to voice mail. Rachna is disappointed that Raj ignored her call.

Oh no, it seems that Raj doesn't want to talk to me. I knew it...I knew that he must be really sad and angry at me...but wait, it could just be that he is busy. Let me try calling him again.

Rachna tries calling Raj again. She is about to hang up the phone when she hears a "Hello" from the other side.

"Hi...Raj?"

"Yeah Rachna. What's up? Sorry I missed your call earlier, I was in a meeting with some clients."

Rachna is relieved to hear this. "Oh that's ok. Are you free now?"

"Yeah, the meeting just finished. Anyways, tell me...why did you call?"

"Uhhh, actually I...ummm..."🤔🤔🤔

"Tell me, why are you stammering like that so much? Did you have to discuss something about the project?"

"Uhhh, yeah. I mean, no... Ufff...I'm sorry Raj. Uhh I didn't call you about work. I called you because I wanted to make sure that you were ok. I mean, whatever happened that other night..."

Raj interrupts. "Rachna. Please, if you have called to say sorry then just save your breath...whatever happened that night has passed. Just because I love you doesn't mean that you have to love me back. And you know what, I'm really happy that you told me the truth. It's true, I was upset when I left your house that day, I was feeling rejected, and I was feeling very low. But I thought about it afterwards and I realized that whatever happened was for the best...I mean if you had said yes just to make me happy then we both would have suffered. You and I would have been entangled in a false relationship. So please, don't apologize and don't feel guilty ok? And I know you very well, you have not been able to focus all day because you have been feeling guilty, right?"

Rachna chuckles lightly. "You really do know me very well..."

"Of course I do Rachna! You were, are, and will always be my best friend. And there's nothing that can change that ok? So now stop feeling sorry and go finish your presentation...we have that meeting tomorrow morning and Mr. Kapoor likes everything to be perfect!"

Rachna is stunned to hear this. 😲 She looks around her room to make sure that Raj is not secretly spying on her. "How do you know I still have to finish that presentation?"

"Buddhu, stop looking around your room trying to search for me. 😆😆 I'm here at the office, not at your house spying on you. And besides, a few days ago you had only told me that you were handling this project!"

Rachna laughs. "Oh yeah, I guess I forgot. Raj, I'm really glad that you still see me as your friend. Thank you for just being so awesome! I'm really lucky to have such a sweet and understanding guy like you in my life."

"Rachna, these senti and emotional lines don't suit you at all."

Rachna laughs. "Raj you always know what to say. Ok then, I should go now, I have a lot of work to do before tomorrow's meeting. I'll see you then! Bye, good night!"

"Good night Rachna. See you tomorrow!"

Rachna hangs up the phone and smiles lightly. She is feeling much better after talking to Raj. She grabs her laptop again and starts working furiously to finish her work.

7:00 pm. Mayank and Gunjan's Room.

Mayank has just returned home from work. He changes out of his clothes and is about to leave his room when Gunjan walks in.

"Gunjan, where were you? I was calling out for you when I came home but Ma told me that you had not come home yet?"

"Yeah Mayank I had a meeting with a real estate agent. He took me to see some potential sites for the rec center and there was a lot of traffic so I got late. I found some interesting sites but I want to get your opinion on it first before I decide anything. Oh and this came for you in the mail by the way."

Gunjan hands Mayank a sealed, manilla envelope addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Mayank Garg. It is marked as Private and Confidential'.

"Private and confidential? For both of us? What is this Gunjan?"

"Open it and see. I'm just going to go change and freshen up ok?"

"Ya, sounds good."

Mayank sits on the bed, opens the envelope, and takes out the enclosed paper. Mayank reads the letter and is shocked. He jumps up and barges into the bathroom with a beaming smile.

"Mayank! What are you doing??"

Mayank ignores whatever Gunjan is saying and just picks her up and twirls her around.

"Oh my god Gunjan!!! I'm so happy! You'll never believe it! Gunjan, our dream is finally coming true!"

"What? Uff Mayank I don't understand anything! What are you saying? Put me down first!"

Mayank puts Gunjan down. He holds her shoulders and then just envelops her into a big hug. 🤗

Gunjan smiles. "Mayank, now tell me! Tell me, what happened?"

Mayank gives a mischievous look. "No not yet. Chalo let's go downstairs and I'll tell the entire family together."

Gunjan is a bit disappointed 😔 that Mayank doesn't want to tell her first, but she agrees.

7:30 pm. Garg House. Dining Room.

Everyone is already sitting at the dining table when Mayank and Gunjan arrive. They sit down together and Gunjan pokes Mayank and nods at him. Mayank smiles back her and gives her a reassuring look.

"Ok Gunjan and I have to tell you all something important."

Everyone looks at Mayank expectantly.

Seema: "Yeah Mayank beta. Speak up. Any good news?"

Mayank smiles and looks at Gunjan. Turning back to the rest of the family: "Yeah, it is some good news."

Seema: "Really!?!? I knew it! I had been thinking about this for the past few days. I had thought that this might be the case!"

Seema excitedly goes to Gunjan and gives her a hug. Mayank and Gunjan are both confused by this. 😕😕

"Arre Ma,what are you doing? Why are you hugging Gunjan?"

"You and Gunjan have just given us such good news."

Mayank is confused. "What? But I haven't even said anything."

Shail: "Mayank beta this was enough. We understood. Beta, congratulations to you both!"

Mayank and Gunjan are getting even more confused. 😕

Sangeeta: "Well that's good, not Dolu will have another little one to give him company."

Gunjan blushes 😳☺️ and Mayank also realizes what everyone else is thinking. 😲

"What? You guys have it all wrong! Nothing like that...I wasn't telling you this news! I was going to tell you all that my promotion got approved."

Seema looks disappointed. "Oh that's it beta?"

Gunjan jumps up and hugs Mayank. "Really Mayank? You mean that letter was from New York? Oh my gosh! I'm so proud of you!"

Dayal: "Letter from New York? Mayank what's all this beta?"

"Tau ji this is what I was trying to tell you all. But you guys were just thinking something else. I just wanted to tell you all that my company has approved my promotion. They are offering me a position at the New York office with a 10% salary increase, a yearly bonus, and an apartment. I had applied for this position many times before but they always rejected me, but this time I got the job!"

Seema dreamily says: "Well I didn't become a grandma but at least I will get to go to New York."

Prabhu: "Seema, you're too much." 🤔

Everyone laughs when they hear this. 😆😆🤣 They all congratulate Mayank.

Precap: "But Mayank, why was that letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Mayank Garg? It's announcing your promotion, so why did they put my name on it too?"

Kabir and Rachna are returning home from their presentation when their car breaks down.
