Chapter 10

February 1, 2014. 6:30 pm. Garg House.

Rachna is in her room getting ready for the dinner. She is trying to decide what to wear and in the process, her room has clothes scattered everywhere...on the bed, on the floor, on her desk. Shail comes in to talk to Rachna and is shocked to see Rachna's room.

"Oh my god! Rachna! What have you done to your room?!?!"

"Mummy! I can't figure out what to wear?!"

"What?! Beta it's just a simple dinner...wear anything. You look good in everything."

"Ufff mummy! You're no help at all!"

"Ok fine, I was going anyways. But I came to just tell you that Raj is already waiting downstairs. Get ready fast and come downstairs quickly."

"What, Raj is already here? But I told him to come by 7:30...why is he so early?"

"I don't know all that but you have to come downstairs fast! Rachna hurry up beta!"

Shail leaves and Rachna sits down on her bed frustrated. Gunjan comes in and sees the clothes scattered everywhere.

"Hmmm so Ms. Garg can't figure out what to wear hunh? Who are you trying to impress by the way? Dadi or somebody else?" Gunjan laughs.

"Oh Gunjan, you're too much! But please help me!!"

With Gunjan's advice, Rachna decides to wear a black crochet dress paired with purple strappy heels.

With a natural makeup look, a little bit of peachy-pink gloss on her lips, and her hair left down with some loose curls, Rachna is ready.

Raj is sitting in the living room with Mayank and Dholu. When he sees Rachna coming down the stairs, he is mesmerized by her. He just keeps staring at her in a trance-like state. Raj is brought out of his dream world when the doorbell rings.

Rachna yells "I'll get it!" and runs to open the door.

She opens the door to find dadi standing there with a small bouquet of flowers. Rachna looks around but is disappointed to see that Kabir is not there.

"What's wrong Rachna beta? Who are you looking for?"

"Nobody dadi, I was just...anyways, you come inside. Mummy is waiting for you."

Rachna and dadi walk into the living room where the rest of the Garg family and Raj are sitting. Everyone greets dadi and Shail introduces dadi to Raj.

"Mausi ji, this is Raj...Rachna's friend from college. And Raj, this is our neighbor. By the way mausi ji, where's Nanhe? He didn't come?"

"Oh Shail, he went to Mumbai yesterday for some work and his flight got delayed so he is going to come a little bit later."

"Oh...that's ok. Come let's sit."

While the adults are sitting in the living room, Rachna, Gunjan, Mayank, and Raj decide to go upstairs on the roof. Gunjan suggests that they play a game. Everyone agrees to play truth or dare. It's Mayank's turn first.

Rachna: "Ok bhaiyya, tell me...truth or dare."

Mayank: "Truth."

Gunjan: "Ok then I'm going to ask...let me ask the question! Ummm, ok tell me what is one habit that you find the most irritating in me?"

Rachna and Raj laugh.

Rachna: "Now you're gone bhaiyya! Answer carefully!"

Mayank: "Gunjan, just remember it's a game all right? So I'm just answering for fun...ok, the most irritating habit about you is that you...snore at night."

Everyone laughs this and Gunjan punches Mayank playfully.

Gunjan: "Ok Raj, your turn. Truth or dare."

Raj: "Ummm dare."

Gunjan: "Ooohh, ok then you have to dance with Rachna on a song that I put on."

Raj remembers Rachna's reaction and how she had turned away when he danced with her at the party.

"Umm no Gunjan, I don't think Rachna will like it. Give me something else to do."

Gunjan: "Her, what is this? No bargaining! You have to do it...c'mon Raj and Rachna...go!"

Raj and Rachna get up as Gunjan puts on the song Khuda Jaane.

(Male)
Sajde mein yun hi jhukta hoon
Tum pe hi aa ke rukta hoon
Kya yeh sab ko hota hai

Raj puts his hand at Rachna's waist and they start dancing slowly. Raj is staring at Rachna's face, mesmerized by her beauty, while Rachna seems to be very uncomfortable and is looking away from Raj.

(Female)
Hum ko kya lena hai sab se
Tum se hi sab batein ab se
Ban gaye ho tum meri dua

Raj is enjoying every moment of this dance with Rachna. He remembers their fun times from college when Rachna used to be his best friend and they used to do everything together. Spending so much time together with Rachna, he had fallen in love with her, but he was always too scared to tell her because he feared that she didn't love him. And after Rachna had gone away to NYU, they had slowly drifted apart...

Khuda Jaane ke mein fida hun
Khuda Jaane mein mit gaya
Khuda jaane yeh kyun huwa hai
Ke ban gaye ho tum mere khuda

Raj twirls Rachna around one final time as Gunjan shuts of the music. Mayank and Gunjan clap as Raj and Rachna take their seats.

Gunjan: "Nice job! See that wasn't so bad!"

Mayank: "Ok then...Rachna, your turn now. Truth or dare?"

Rachna: "Ummm, truth...no dare...no truth...uhhh no just wait a minute."

Everyone laughs at Rachna's confusion.

Gunjan: "Rachna we are playing a game only...why are you so confused? Pick fast."

Rachna: "Sorry...ummm I'll pick truth...final."

Suddenly Kabir walks in. He is dressed casually in a fitted black shirt with dark wash jeans.

Kabir: "Hey guys! Sorry I'm late...my flight got delayed. Shail aunty told me that you all were up here. So, what's going on?"

Rachna is excited to see Kabir. She quickly perks up and smiles at him. Kabir comes and sits next to Rachna.

Gunjan: "Hi Kabir! Nothing much...we are just playing truth or dare and it's Rachna's turn to answer something truthfully. Who is going to ask the question?"

Kabir and Raj both say "I will!" together.

Raj: "Oh, sorry Kabir...it's ok. You can go ahead and ask."

Kabir: "Sorry Raj and thanks! So Rachna, tell me...if you had a choice of going on a date with someone, who would it be? Oh and, no celebrities...that's cheating."

Rachna is a little surprised by Kabir's question. Everyone else looks at her...they are all interested to hear what Rachna will say.

Before Rachna can say anything Dholu comes and tells everyone that dinner is ready. To avoid answering the question, Rachna quickly gets up and goes downstairs. Everyone else follows her.

Everyone is seated at the dining table. Rachna is sitting next to Gunjan while both Raj and Kabir sit opposite her on the other side of the table. They all engage in some small chit chat during dinner but Rachna is pretty quiet throughout the meal. Kabir is studying her every move very intently. Gunjan notices this and smiles as she nudges Rachna to make her aware of Kabir. Rachna looks up and Kabir looks away. This little game of staring and avoiding each other goes on all through dinner.

Once dinner is over, Raj announces that he has to leave

"Thank you so much aunty for inviting me over. It felt just like old times and the food was delicious."

"You're welcome beta...come over anytime you want. After all, this is like your second house right?"

"Yes aunty, I will. Thanks."

Rachna goes to walk Raj to the door.

"Bye Raj. Thanks for coming tonight."

"Thanks for calling me Rachna. I had a lot of fun."

As Rachna turns to go back into the house, Raj holds her hand to call her back.

"Rachna, one minute! Ummm, I wanted to say something to you."

Rachna seems confused. "Uhh ok, what's up? Tell me."

"Ummm, I...I...I..."

"Go on. I...what?"
"Ummm, this is really hard for me to say. I don't know how you're going to react to this but I've waited too long to say this to you."

Rachna can sense what he is about to say.

"Raj, please. You don't have to say anything. I know what you're about to say."

"No Rachna, I don't think you know. Please let me talk. It was our first day of college...you were wearing a pink salwar kameez and you had your hair in a simple side braid. I was mesmerized by your innocence and your simplicity from the moment I first laid eyes on you. You walked into class and by chance decided to sit next to me. That was the first day of our friendship. As I got to know you and we became good friends, I realized that I was slowly starting to fall in love with you. I've waited too long to say this Rachna...but I can't wait any longer. I love you. I love you very very much."

Saying this Raj hugs Rachna.

Rachna feels uncomfortable and slowly breaks the hug, pushing Raj away.

"Raj. I...I...I don't know how to tell you this. I've sensed for a really long time that you loved me...but Raj, I only see you as a friend...nothing more. Please, I feel really bad telling you this but I can't lie to you. I hope you understand."
Hearing this from Rachna, Raj gets tears in his eyes.

"I guess I should have known that you don't love me. I'm sorry Rachna...I should have never said anything."

"Raj please, don't apologize. I'm sorry for hurting you like this. It's just that you're my friend and I have always seen you as a friend only. I hope you understand. Please forgive me."

Raj wipes away his tears and smiles lightly.

"It's ok Rachna. It's not your fault...I love you but that doesn't mean that you also have to love me. I understand. Don't worry, you were and will always be my best friend! Ok, I should go now. Bye."

"Bye Raj..."

Rachna watches Raj drive away in his car and feels bad about what just happened. She stands outside for a few more minutes and then walks back into the house.
