I have a great deal of problem talking about racism and discrimination after living in US for over 25 yrs. But also believe that your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength if thinking is channelized properly. One must have courage to chose their destination and follow along the path. Dhairye Sahase Lakshmi! The hurdles are nothing but natural in any chosen path. racism, discrimination of color, size and beauty are nothing but hurdles along your path.

We either let ourselves be bothered by these things or rise above them and learn to ignore these hurdles and focus on our destination. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE no matter where they are, or which society they belong to. People will display displeasure and discriminate over anything and everything under the sky. Unfortunately, discrimination has neither logic nor ilaaj.

But you can change the attitude of people towards 'YOU' through your actions because people have short term memory.

I was married when I was 19, still in college, and had my son in 9 mos 9 days of my marriage. Nobody liked to see a pregnant woman in the college. I was treated poorly. But I couldn't care less. My attitude was you can "CLOSE YOUR EYES!" I graduated and the same people thought I am a hero.

I raised my son to ignore these hurdles and never let him lose focus on things he was good at. I channelized his efforts encouraging him to excel in everything he did. He is the only Indian in US Navy Surface Warfare, which is dominated by white males. He was given the highest honor to remain in the history of US Navy by declaring him the First Officer Of the Deck during the Commissioning (inauguration) of the new warship last month in CA.

As some of you mentioned, we need to respect ourselves first and be proud of what we are. Then the success and acceptance follows automatically. Jahaa chaar bartan hothi hai, awaaz bhi hothi hai. :)

@ Ashrozia - I agree. Preaching is easier than practicing. Our life should be our message.

Both Hema Malini and Rekha were dark...that I know very well...actually, some people were really shocked to know that Hema Malini was dark, as she is called the DREAM GIRL....I must say, did u watch that movie Dream Girl or Charas or Jyothi...I cant even imagine someone can be so pretty...

I have a friend from South...she is so fair....

Vaijayantimala or Hema or Rekha have never been presented as DARK people (no matter what their actual complexion be). They have always been presented infront of the camera as people with a fairer complexion! You can find a few stills in which their color seem brownish, but generally they always were presented as fair skinned womrn.

Coming to Sridevi ... she was quite fair ... and presented as that too.

Now coming to Kajol and Rani ... they are not fair, and neither have they been presented as fair skinned girls. They opened to idea that dark skinned ladies can also reach stardom with their own colors (not artificial whiteness all over themselves). However, in real life, Kajol got married to Ajay due to childhood love (most probably, as that is what I have gathered)... and Rani faces alot of discrimination still (mainly for her color and weight). However, they are stars and they have their community which will eventually find someone who would marry them, perhaps mainly for the name (thats my POV, as none seem very much interested in Rani).

Gauri Khan is no star... she is the wife of Shahrukh Khan ... thats all she is.
Not to mention the greatest Super Stars of our Industry ... all were super fair (including Dilip Sahab and Raj ji or Aamir Khan - Madhubala or Sridevi or Waheeda Rehman or Karishma Kapoor etc.).

However as the latest trend in the movie making business focuses on the BODY SHAPE and exposure, moving away from the traditional modes of attraction ... there is a new wave bringing in new definitions of beauty!

vyjayanthimala, hema malini, rekha (daughter of gemini ganesan, one of the 3 great tamil actors), and sridevi were born in tamil nadu bcoz so many people in tamil nadu having dark complexion.

The definition of beauty is still shallow.

they are now going with the Hollywood standards of shape, size, sensuality etc.

Amazingly they are heading out exactly where Hollywood headed to.

Its really sad, now the girls have to keep up with the new trends of being super slim, size 0 , and wearing revealing dresses.

Now , the relationships have become more and more, commercial.

This is why some times I like tamil and telugu movies more but even them are really not that good. its not clean any more, its not something you can watch with your parents sitting besides you.

There is no sense of Hayaa left and no sense of dignity , modesty and women actually think this is liberation. Rather its abuse and they are being treated as a commodity and a thing for men's pleasure. [sorry off topic]

With regards to the comments on sexual orientation,

I feel bad about the people who are discriminated due to that, but I certainly do not agree to what they are doing.

There is a difference between being fair vs. agreeing.

If someone is lets say disgusted due to the act of what goes on with the same sex, should be able to set their brain in such a way that they do not hurt someone's self respect.

This is an of course a MAJOR issue in US. The elections here are very much decisive due to one's understanding of how they depict Same Sex and Abortion rights. Kerry lost due to him supporting Same sex and Abortion rights here in the 2000 election.

Though this is a HUGEEE TOPIC in and of itself.
====

needless to say, its only when people tend to bring their personal opinions into human treatment and make their choice overshadow fairness, issues arise.

Suchitra, in one of your posts you wrote that exposure of woman's body is thought of as liberal and sense dignity is lost or something to that extent. When that trend was opposed, it was women who fought for it and made a hue and cry that women are oppressed and we can do everything a man can do.... so we got got it... now both men and women can wear less clothes and infact women surpassed men.

Now talking about sexual orientation, same thing is happening and people talk about equality and respect irrespective of sexual orientation. Down the road in 20 years, people will disgust the same acts when society opens up.

Democrats have always been liberal and becoming more and more liberal. Republicans don't embrace these abnormal liberal views but follow "don't ask don't tell" policy. Kerry wasn't a great presidential candidate anyways. His support for same sex marriages and abortions are contributing factors but not determining factors in losing 2000 elections.

So one must beware of what they support and who they elect because that will determine the culture/trend we set for our future generations.

Great Topic Suchitra. 👏👏👏

This is relevant to Bidaai, although sadly, Bidaai has drifted away from dealing with the illsa of society against dark skinned girls.

I am also astounded that in marriage market dark skinned girls are often referred to as having great features. What is that supposed to mean???? Great features are her consolation prize for being dark skinned?? Come on, we are better than than.

Really, great features, fair color, or any of those characteristics mean nothing if your personality stinks. Take Oprah Winfrey for instance, she has OODLES of personality and she is one of the most successful women in the world.

I think any person can really shine if they focus on their attitude, personality, education, self-confidence and overall social skills. I think a person should be assessed for their overall package and not just their color, features, or caste.

While many of us here in US recognize that Desi's are equally culpable of racism as a local white, we really need to also recognize that the younger generation is really better than the previous one. Today's youngsters are keenly aware of multi-toned fabric of society and is willing to look beyond their own ilk.

Racism is just one of the myriad ways of discrimination. As someone in this thread pointed out that other physical characteristics such as height and weight are also used to discriminate.

However, there is another point of discrimination most Indians do not like to address or accept that is sexual orientation.

We tend to oversee this fact and try to sweep it under the rug. We snicker at gays and lesbians and we think that is something that wont ever affect us. It makes us uncomfortable to accept that someone we know could be gay and it makes us feel right to admonish these people and use it as our moral unrighteousness.

I am not judging the religious or social leanings of anti-gay people, all I am saying is that EVERY HUMAN BEING DESPITE THEIR RACE, RELIGION, GENDER, NATIONALITY, COLOR OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION DESERVES EQUAL TREATMENT AND RESPECT.

phew!! thats all for now. 👍🏼

first coming to Bidaai, I feel Bidaai's concept is not that a dark-skinned girl gets badly treated...its a part of the story, but its main concept is that are fair-skinned girls really more lucky than dark-skinned girls...I think this extra concept of Bidaai is making it successful...
anyways, we all know dark-skinned girls are mistreated, we sympathesise with them. Its an age-old problem, everyone says many things, but noone really practices anything. If we had really practised what we preach, things would have been much much optimistic by now.

Secondly, sexual discrimination....I think it is very applicable in China, because, at one time , there was so much craving for male children, females foetuses were killed. I read Chinese do not have enough girls for marriage for these number of guys. Many Chineses guys are marrying out of their own country. This is also a disbalance of nature, when female foetus are killed ..this is also a lesson as to not play with nature...
