Great Topic Suchitra. šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

This is relevant to Bidaai, although sadly, Bidaai has drifted away from dealing with the illsa of society against dark skinned girls.

I am also astounded that in marriage market dark skinned girls are often referred to as having great features. What is that supposed to mean???? Great features are her consolation prize for being dark skinned?? Come on, we are better than than.

Really, great features, fair color, or any of those characteristics mean nothing if your personality stinks. Take Oprah Winfrey for instance, she has OODLES of personality and she is one of the most successful women in the world.

I think any person can really shine if they focus on their attitude, personality, education, self-confidence and overall social skills. I think a person should be assessed for their overall package and not just their color, features, or caste.

While many of us here in US recognize that Desi's are equally culpable of racism as a local white, we really need to also recognize that the younger generation is really better than the previous one. Today's youngsters are keenly aware of multi-toned fabric of society and is willing to look beyond their own ilk.

Racism is just one of the myriad ways of discrimination. As someone in this thread pointed out that other physical characteristics such as height and weight are also used to discriminate.

However, there is another point of discrimination most Indians do not like to address or accept that is sexual orientation.

We tend to oversee this fact and try to sweep it under the rug. We snicker at gays and lesbians and we think that is something that wont ever affect us. It makes us uncomfortable to accept that someone we know could be gay and it makes us feel right to admonish these people and use it as our moral unrighteousness.

I am not judging the religious or social leanings of anti-gay people, all I am saying is that EVERY HUMAN BEING DESPITE THEIR RACE, RELIGION, GENDER, NATIONALITY, COLOR OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION DESERVES EQUAL TREATMENT AND RESPECT.

phew!! thats all for now. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Oh another point Favorite point that royally pi**es me off - Just because one is a south indian doesn't automatically mean one is dark skinned.

Just like any north indian can be dark skinned, there are equal number of dark skinned people in the south. So please lets not say that south indian actresses were dark. I can name enough and more north india actresses who were dark. I thought the point of this thread was not to create sectarian discrimination either.

Another point while I am at it 😊 - South India is more than just Madras. There are several different states in the south, and not all of them are Madrasis

just thought i'd clarify. 😃

Serialjunkie-well said!I am from Andhra and if I sat to a North-Indian thay I am from Andhra or South the first Q they ask is 'Is it near Chennai?'

And Hindi films depict South Indians in a wrong way too. They show the person is always a Madrasi with a cigarette and some marks on his forehead and it doesn't stop there, they make fun of the accent too

And other thing you rightly pointed out is Sexual Orientation. Why such discrimination? Are they not humans like me,you and everyone else?So what if its the same sex partner? Our temples has depictions of sexual images and many others(which i don't want to say here)but we visit them anyway but in reality they just shy away.

your right everyone has the right to love be it the same sex partner or not.
I mean just because we are not homosexual and may not agree with it personally (no offense) doesnt mean we should force our thoughts and opinions on anyone else after all they like us are human as well and they too have the right to make their own choices in life. It is their life to live.
It sickens me when i see people discriminating against someone due to their sexual orientation despite the fact that they may be a wonderful person and loyal friend.
that is why i try to get to know a person before i make judgements about them despite their pysical appearance, rumours i may have heard, what people have told me about them and things like sexual orientation etc
if everyone did that i persoanally feel the owrld would be a much better place for us and future generations.
the attitudes of individuals in society set a poor example to the next generation giving them the message that it is ok to dicriminate against individuals in society and that it is normal to do so. How sickening
