Even though I've lived my whole life in Canada, I can relate to this issue tho in a different way. Honestly, I didn't know that being dark vs "fair" was such a huge issue until I watched the movie Vivah for the first time when I was like 14 and then subsequent other Indian TV shows like Bidai that dealt with the issue of being dark skinned. The reason I didn't know it was a bad thing was simply because of the fact that all my life I have watched my white friends pretty much burn themselves in the name of tanning just so they can get the "dark" skin colour that I have! My best friend (who is white) always jokingly asks me if I would lend her some of my skin colour so she wouldn't be so white lol. So it really surprises me when my mom talks about how she used to be ostracized because of how dark she is.

If only people in India knew how lucky we all are! People over here in Canada/U.S. would die to have our complexion, yet we look down upon it??

And the person who asked me to try for a boy is just a neighbour who used to see me since I was a child and yeo you guessed it right,it's an old-lady lol

A Gyno?
Not against your MIL but this shows how desires can cloud ones judgement.

Education can help broaden a person's mind - a lot- but unfortunately, to this disease-Racism, Disease of the Heart, the cure will come through spiritual healing...

you will know the difference once you visit india hun. I think i hear ppl making remarks about one's complexion or looking down at dark ppl almost every day when i was back home, & here in canada i barely hear any racist remarks (not tht it doesnt exist here, offcourse it does)...maybe cuz here now everybody tries to stop racism. But what would happen in india? Anybody making any movement? Don't know.

Agree my white friends, they r a DIE HARD FAN of tanned skin lol...

@smitha...so glad to hear about your dad, really glad that ppl like ur dad exist in the world. A woman wouldn't want anything but a person as a husband who love her the most. Really respect your father.

No one does anything in India.Actually I feel the youngsters of today are doing great by selecting their SO's not minding the caste, the colour, the status etc.My sister got married recently(love marriage)and so many people I know whose parents(mostly mothers)were against it but they stood by their love and got married!

Thanks Sadia! The main reason why I hated Ragini was the way she behaved with her father.I can't actually come to terms with kids behaving that way!

In Rang de Basanti, there is a dialogue..." that nothing changes on its own, one has to make efforts to change something"...same thing Sdahna said yesterday that "nothing can be achieved by just speaking, we need to execute it"...
same is this type of issue...just like Smitha said that her sister took such an initiative...people need to take initiative to stop all these baseless things...we need to spend out time and energy on better stuffs...

I also hate it when kids behave in a rude way with their parents. You are really lucky though smitha you got such a great father. Not everybody's father is like that.

I'm a silent reader of this forum but I had to respond to this topic. I'm of Indian descent but was born and brought up in apartheid South Africa. We pretty much had to deal with, exactly what blacks in pre-Civil rights America had to deal with and this was as recent as the 80's. No freedom of movement, limited educational & work oportunities, pretty much your race dictated every aspect of your life. And it didn't matter if you were of the highest caste or how damn fair you were, as long as your ID book identified you as an Indian, you were getting the same treatment as as the lowest caste, darkest skinned Indian. In a strange, wierd way all this institionalised racism turned out to be a great leveler within the Indian community itself. Hardly anyone now knows what caste they belong too, I don't and the younger generation is barely even aware of what caste is. Things like arranged marriages and dowry which, I guess is largely responsible for people not wanting daughters is almost unheard of. Like the original poster says, it's strange some Indians discriminate among themselves so much when they actually all do belong to the same race. And if you had to throw these highly prejudiced people in a Western, multi-cultural society where racism based on actual race exists, then you'll find fair skin/ high caste actually counts for nought.

Really shallow!

Haan yaar ... the words "Moti, Kaali, mausi ... etc etc" are not good words. Beauty is there, but some people just cant see it. I congratulate those people who are putting their precious effort to change these views of people! ... 👏

Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change you want to see in the world."

See, its always easier said and difficult doing. But what ya'll can do is try! ... Start from your ownself! Choose someone who is not really perfectly fit and his complexion is dark (the darker the better). And ofcourse, use those tests to find out his INNER PURE SELF aswell! ... This will give rise to a trend which our later generations can follow.

I've seen many (if not most) Indian girls using "WHITE" women pictures in their display. Be it a Caucasian celebrity (which is the majority) or one of our native indian FAIR celebrity! ... Ofcourse its everyone's own choice!!! ... but then I am yet to see a black actress/celebrity in anyones display.

Anyways really ... you guyz rock!

I am proud of your guyz... really! 🤗
