Chapter 8
Ahem started being very rude to everyone and anyone who took Gopi's name. But in the solitude of his own room, he was worried as to what might have happened to her and where she might have gone. He thought of checking with all her relatives from both her Mother's side and Father's side, both within and outside the city. But he found her nowhere.
He started thinking of how to bring back Gopi. His mom was right; police complaint is not a good idea. His mind went to private detectives, but he didn't trust anyone with Gopi anymore. He knew his Gopi was too naive to guess at what other people's real intentions might be.
His mind all of a sudden went to someone, whose services he used too often to track fake business parties. He was the soul of discretion and Ahem knew he would do his level best. If there is someone who can find his Gopi, it was Aaryansh. He thought of contacting Aaryansh first thing in the morning and having made some progress he slept to wake up early to meet Aaryansh.
Its Morning and Ahem gets ready and goes to office very early. He had to meet Aaryansh on his way to get him to search Gopi
Ahem – Hi Aaryansh, How are you?
Aaryansh - Ahem Bhai, what a surprise? Are you getting a new contract for which I have to do a little sleuthing into the company's background?
Aaryansh knew what fun it was to work for Ahem and had a twinkle in his eye.
Ahem – No Aaryansh. This time I am not here because of any contract. This time I am here because of a very sensitive issue and I would like you to exert full discretion and take care of this problem yourself. I don't want anyone else to be involved in this except for you.
Aaryansh could now feel the immense control that Ahem was exerting on himself to think straight and knew it was a very important matter to him. He switched to his serious mode.
Aaryansh – Ji Ahem Bhai, I will deal with this case myself. Tell me what is it?
Ahem tells Aaryansh everything from the so-called boyfriend, to his foul temper, which made him loose Gopi. Aaryansh was stunned at the depth of feeling in this hard core business man, who never showed emotions, lest people take advantage of him. Aaryansh assured Ahem that he will get on this case immediately and will do his best to find out Bhabhiji.
Here Gayatri was doing well with her family, she wouldn't call them new family, as they were the only family she knew… Though she still remembered Ahem and got depressed about her life, but with constant support of Mamata and Malini, she started to face life again. This time not as a subdued slave, but as an aggressive person, since Malini never allowed her to say yes without asking for a reason which can convince her. And believe me convincing Malini is more difficult than doing a bungee jump from the world's tallest building.
Gayatri started helping around the house and with the little child, whose name was Rajveer, who was lovingly called Raj. The kid was the apple of the eye of the whole family and Gayatri spent most of her time with the kid till he slept. When she was free she used to embroider and stitch beautiful and self-designed clothes for her sister, who was in college studying Business Law. She also used to make wonderful snacks for anyone who used to visit Mamata. This was a kind of way to keep her mind occupied so she is not troubled by her memories. But Mamata thought Gayatri was trying to repay them or something and talked to Gayatri.
Mamata – Beta, why are you tiring yourself so much? Your mom is alive to help you out.
Gayatri – Maa, I am not doing anything heavy, just a bit of embroidery and stitching.
Mamata – Beta, but it is still strain to the eye. Please don't do all this. It hurts me to see you working so hard. Your Baba makes enough to see us through every day, we have few acres of land which is very fertile and gives us enough crop, Malini has scholarship and your taking care of Malini's clothes is enabling us to save a lot as well child. Why do you still want to exhaust yourself?
Gayatri knew that the land and house didn't go into the evil Jiju's hand just because they were deeded to Malini's kids and at her death if she didn't have kids, the money was to go to charity. It was the condition of Malini's granny, who bequeathed this to Malini in her will after the death of her elder granddaughter. She made the deal so water tight with the help of trusted sarpanch and his son Krishna, that it was impossible for anyone to get their hands on it. Gopi was relieved at the thoughtfulness of Malini's Granny, now her granny too… thinking this she smiled. She totally loved her Granny.
Seeing Gayatri lost in her own world, Malini calls her a few times. Then Gayatri finally realized that she was still talking to her mother.
Gayatri – Maa, I am totally fine. I do it because I enjoy it.
Mamata – you sure, beta? I feel as if you are trying to repay some debt to us or something. If you even think like this, your Maa will be very hurt.
Gayatri now understands why her mother is so frantic and decides to tell her the real reason for her keeping herself way too busy. She didn't want to see her Maa hurt and she knew her Maa will understand her reasons for keeping herself busy.
Gayatri – Maa, I am not trying to repay any debt. I feel this is my house and you and Baba are my real parents and Malini my real sister. My reason for keeping myself is different. If I don't keep myself busy, my past starts chasing me and I can't even sleep.
Mamata now understands what the reason is for all this and is proud of her daughter, who doesn't want to share her pain and hurt everyone who means something to her. She vows to protect her at all cost and not to let her cry one more tear.
Mamata – Now I understand child. Hmmm let me see what my daughter is making.
Mamata admires her work, kisses her on her forehead and leaves.
This was the way of things in Suraj Pratap's house for a while, with Gayatri trying to immerse her pain in work and Mamata and Malini supporting her.
On the other hand Aaryansh has exhausted all the venues of searching for Gopi. But she had vanished. He tracked her till the Bus stand and even tracked the bus she boarded, when he started asking each and every bus driver and conductor. But it took him more than a fortnight to accomplish this. Bus driver was only able to tell him that a lady who looked as if she was dead on her feet boarded the bus on the first day of Navratri. But he was unable to recognize the picture as he never saw her properly and also as far as he remembered, her face was covered in Ghoonghat. The Driver advised Aaryansh to ask the conductor. Aaryansh questions the conductor.
Aaryansh – Have you seen this lady on the first day of the Navratri? The driver says he did see a lady who looked crestfallen, but couldn't confirm if it was the same lady as in the picture.
Conductor (looking at the pic and hiding his shock) – I am not sure sir. I usually am on this bus most of its journey to and fro but I see so many faces every day that even if she would have spoken to me for long, It won't be possible for me to place her. And the state you describe the lady was in, she wouldn't have even bothered to open her mouth. If you want me to contact you if I remember something, I will be glad to help.
Aaryansh gives him his contact details. Conductor assures Aaryansh, that he would contact him as and when he remembers anything about the lady.
Conductor - I wouldn't want anything to befall her because I was negligent to notice her state of mind.
Saying this conductor resumed his work.
The conductor was none other than Suraj Kaka, ready to do anything to keep his child from being hurt again. He wanted to be very sure before he gave out any information.
After a few days Kaka called Aaryansh to give him a little truth so he doesn't have to deal with the detective again.
Suraj Kaka/Conductor – I do remember a lady who boarded the bus that day. She had her head covered in Ghoonghat. And now that you mention, I do think she was dejected. But I am afraid that makes me unable to confirm the person as the one in the picture. I'll pray that she is safe and is found by her loved ones soon.
Aaryansh is very upset that the trail has gone cold so suddenly and gets a chilling feeling, which is not a very favorite feeling with him. But what could he do, if all the avenues are closed.
Aaryansh reports to Ahem that the trail has gone cold, since no one recognizes her on the bus she travelled, the night she disappeared.
Aaryansh - I could positively nail down the bus she travelled in bus as the Driver and the conductor were sure someone boarded the bus who was not herself atall. But couldn't confirm her identity as they said she had her face totally covered in the ghoonghat.
Ahem doesn't know what to do and goes home very depressed. Diwali preparations were going on in the family and everyone was pretending to be happy, so that he didn't get a reason to lose his temper. He feels as if he were the worst person in the world for hurting his family so much. But couldn't do anything to show his family that it was all an act, before he nailed down the perpetrators of all this disharmony in his house.
Kinjal seeing her chance to sway her brother towards Anita and to make sure they get together takes this opportunity to bring Anita's subject in front of Ahem. Ahem feels something fishy, as everyone knows how he hates that name and no one dared take her name in front of him. He also knew Kinjal is not so stupid as to invite his anger, so it has to be something deeper.
Kinjal – Ahem Bhai, why are you so upset even now? Gopi never deserved to be your wife. That anpar gavaar jaahil, how can she become my Bhai's wife?
Though Ahem felt like strangling Kinjal for sprouting nonsense, he keeps listening.
Kinjal – I think Anita would have been a best match for you. Why don't you marry Anita since that Gopi is gone now? You love her too… right???
Ahem thinks why is this girl so hell bent on seeing me and Anita together and decides to play along to get to the root of the issue
Ahem – I too think so after this experience. I thought mom will choose the best for me, but she got me someone totally unworthy of me.
Kinjal (glowing like a 100W bulb) – it's OK Bhai. I know Anita will understand.
Ahem – I wish.
Kinjal – Don't worry Bhai. Just talk to her once. I am sure she'll be back with you.
Ahem – I will, once I bring up my courage to go to her and talk to her.
Kinjal – Sure Bhai.
Saying this, Kinjal leaves to call her boyfriend. Ahem texts Jigar asking him to keep an eye on Kinjal's incoming and outgoing calls as well as her activities. Ahem had smelled a rat in Kinjal's intentions.
While in Gayatri's life, it was love that filled her days. Gayatri's work was very much appreciated by Malini's friends in college. Her Hi-So classmates started taunting her saying, have you robbed a bank that you can now wear designer clothes. But one thing was the same in both groups. Both of them wanted to know who the designer was. Malini somehow went home without revealing her sister's name that day, as she knew her sister was not ready to face the world yet. But her brain was formulating a plan.
She reached home in a very cheerful mood. Looking at Malini's laughing features Gayatri also had a smile on her face and asks her what has put the spring in my dear sister's feet.
Malini – Atri Di… you won't believe what happened today.
Gayatri – your exuberance speaks for itself. Won't you tell your sis what happened?
Malini – ohhh Di… the most wonderful thing happened, they want you to help them too. I am so proud to be your sister. Ohhh Di…
Malini goes and hugs Gayatri spontaneously. Gayatri embraces her little sister, but was getting neither head nor tail of this conversation and had a very confused look on her face. Malini was still very excited and her feet were dancing like that of a deer.
Gayatri – Malini… Slowly and in sequence dear. Don't jump from one thing to other. My head will start spinning with all the topics you can talk about at one time.
Malini – Atri Di… I have best news for you. Your designs are well liked by everyone in my college. They really want to dress as elegantly as I do. Thanks a lot Di, for making me a princess.
Gayatri has sweet smile on her face at her sister's happiness. She really loved her sister and nephew a lot and loved to see them happy.
Gayatri – What was there to make? You are already a princess.
Malini – Ohhh… Thanks Di. If I ask you something, will you promise to give it to me?
Gayatri – what do you want dear?
Malini – first I want you to promise me Di that you won't refuse me. Only then will I tell you what I want.
Gayatri could never deny Malini anything.
Gayatri – Haan baba… I promise. Now tell me what do you want to ask me about?
Precap: Will Ahem give up on searching Gopi? how long is it before the truth comes out? What is Malini upto? Will Gayatri give Malini whatever she promised she would?
