Great question! Voice quality is the main factor differentiating Indian and Western Singing styles. Indian playback voices have a soft and high range quality or some with low powerful voices like Jaspinder Narulaji are preferred. In Western singing voices have that raspy quality to it and low range powerful voices or those in the middle (neither high nor low range) are preferred. Jenice has that raspiness to her voice, I think you would agree that her voice quality matches Mariah Carey more than it does Shreya Goshal.

Thanks. Looks like Indian singing is more challenging and demanding. Also the differences arise partly because of the way the language is spoken and the way the words are formed and pronounced. A versatile singer should be able to sing both Western and Indian songs pretty well, as they should be able to employ different sectors of the voice box to produce sounds in various fashion ( mere guessing).

many thanx.

Alaap is basically improvisation with word(s) or sound(s) for example the word can be extended in duration and pauses can be added to allow for pitch fluctuations or harkats. It usually takes place near the beginning or end of a song.

Please do remove the ji from my name next time thanks 😊

Mesha you seemed to have studied music, so are you a singer too. Without listening I can tell that you are very good.

I don't have a very big resume 😆 but these few lines sum it all up. I'm currently mentor for Bandish gharana right here on IF. I used to sing for my high school chorus but I gave that up for my dream and am currently a college pre med student. I have other hobbies like writing so I'm good with terms especially those of my interest (music).

I wish you the same Summer3 and continue to rock on! 😎

@Rasny yes do hope to come across you someday since I'm heading towards the same field. 🤓

@ Indradanush in the US we're required to complete 4 yrs of undergraduate (pre-medical) courses in a regular college before we can get admitted to medical school which is like another 7 yrs (including residency). Yes it'll take a while but I have nothing but time...I think 😆

@sevak thanks for the encouragement 👍🏼
